French Lesson plan Comprehensible Input Le Cadeau Parfait

By Frenchified

Make learning French fun with this simple, comprehensible input French lesson plan and story. This lesson plan includes a story with targeted structures that can be repeated to give your students lots of repetitions. Comprehension activities to use after the story will allow you to engage your students and makes sure that your French lesson is truly comprehensible input.

Amadou wants to find the perfect gift for his mother's birthday. But somehow, his gifts don't work out. Can he find the right gift to show his love for her, or will she be disappointed? There are three targeted vocabulary structures that are used multiple times throughout the story. The targeted structures are:

  • le cadeau parfait

  • il veut lui donner

  • dans sa poche

This very simple story is told in two different ways. There is a printable text version, and an animated mp4 version. Tell the story as you watch it (pause if you want to stop and discuss or storyask!), or just watch it for comprehension. The video is just over 5 minutes long, with pause time for students to read the text. There is a second version of the video with only the illustrations - no text - so you can watch it and do story retells. With novice low and novice mid learners, you can tell the story as is. For novice high learners, you can add more details or write a parallel story. You could even use this story at higher levels by having students retell the story in the past.

Here’s what you’ll get in this French Comprehensible Input Lesson:

• Links to the videos both with and without the text

• A printable pdf version of the story

• Comprehension question worksheet

• "Who said it?" worksheet

• Story retell worksheet

• Answer key

Each plan guides your students through meaningful and independent written vocabulary practice, ensuring that they're not just busy, but also learning. Lessons contain vocabulary lists with 25 words and 7 different worksheet options for practice sheets. These include:

  1. Repetition-Based Learning: Utilize the power of repetition to solidify vocabulary retention. Students will practice writing place words multiple times, enhancing their memory and fluency.
  2. Drawing and Labeling: Tap into your students' artistic side as they sketch and label new words. This activity promotes creativity while reinforcing vocabulary and spelling.
  3. Decoding Secret Message: Pictorial symbols provide visual cues that help learners associate meaning with the target language vocabulary. By decoding a message using symbols, learners reinforce their understanding of the language's visual representation.
  4. Alphabetizing: Alphabetizing vocabulary requires active cognitive processing. Students must analyze the words, compare their initial letters, and determine their correct placement in the alphabetical sequence. This cognitive engagement deepens understanding and promotes stronger memory connections with the vocabulary terms.
  5. Short Answer: Provide an opportunity for students to apply the vocabulary in meaningful ways. By constructing responses, students connect the vocabulary to specific contexts, demonstrating their understanding of how the words are used. This application helps with recall and enhances their ability to use it effectively.
  6. Creative Writing: Students draw from previous language knowledge to create complete sentences relevant to the new vocabulary. This is a slightly more advanced activity that allows students to use higher-level thinking and creativity to form sentences using verb tenses and additional they are familiar with.
  7. Code Breaker: Decoding the vocabulary is like solving a puzzle. It encourages critical thinking and problem-solving skills as learners work to match the symbols to the correct letters to form vocabulary while providing ongoing review and reinforcement.
  8. Crossword Puzzle: When students create a crossword puzzle, they actively engage with the vocabulary words. They must think about the meanings of the words, consider their spelling, and create clues that correspond to each word. This active involvement promotes deeper processing and understanding of the vocabulary.
  9. Word Search: Let your students become puzzle masters! They'll create their very own crossword puzzles using new vocabulary. This activity enhances spelling, vocabulary recognition, and problem-solving skills.
  10. Magic Square: Learners must analyze the available options and find the correct matches. This process stimulates critical thinking, encourages logical reasoning, and enhances cognitive skills, all while reinforcing the vocabulary.
  11. Matching: Learners to make connections between words and their translations. By actively associating and pairing words together, learners establish meaningful connections that enhance their understanding and retention of vocabulary.
  12. Categorizing: Engage your students in critical thinking as they categorize their new vocabulary This activity encourages them to analyze and sort words according to different genres.

And more!

French Intermediate Level Review Challenge Cards Bundle

By Love Learning Languages - French Resources

Engage and challenge your intermediate level French students when reviewing major French grammar topics with 27 sets of challenge review cards. Take a look at the preview to see ways that you can use these grammar challenge cards in your French classroom. This bundle saves you over 20%.

Click here for my beginner level review cards bundle.

Click here for my advanced level bundle.

Each set of challenge review cards includes:

  • 25 to 150 challenge cards
  • 4 pages per card for easy printing and cutting out (or use digitally)
  • Answer key

Challenge review cards are my "go to" resource for every single grammar topic that I teach, from beginner to advanced levels. There's something about changing up the routine from boring desk work that is very motivating to students. They appreciate working with partners or small groups, and YOU will really love hearing them practice all of the grammar they've been learning while SPEAKING French.

You will be able to pull out these sets of cards again and again, year after year, as you teach and reteach basic grammar concepts. It's never a bad idea to pull out a random stack even with your more advanced students to give them a solid review of certain things they may have forgotten.

These challenge cards can easily carry you through your whole career as a French teacher, and they'll save you so much time. If you like to print and have hard copies for your students to hold, I recommend laminating them and hooking them together with a ring.

I have baskets of these cards ready to pull out and go at the drop of a hat. When you give students the answer keys they can easily work independently. How about never needing to prepare for a sub on days when you can't be there?

Teacher Testimonial:

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ “I offer these right now as a "daily challenge" activity.  Not all of my students have verb conjugation skills, but this contest type activity gets them engaged and interested in making an attempt and slowly, over time, I see that they are putting the pieces together on what they are actually doing.  These cards are beautiful and I laminated them and will find many ways to use them in the future.”

First Day of School "Language Talk"

By Language Arts Excellence

Whether you teach Spanish, French, German, or Mandarin Chinese, this is the perfect lesson to get your students thinking about the purpose of studying foreign languages!

This product features an engaging "Language Talk" activity that will have your new students thinking, writing, speaking, and moving on the very first day of school. In this activity, they must choose between 6 different quotes about the purpose of learning languages and articulate why the quote aligns with their perspective. I use this lesson every year to set the tone for what I expect in class - it is a great way to gain insight about their current attitudes towards speaking another language while they get to know one another with a higher level thinking activity as opposed to the same-old, same-old icebreaker.

Product includes:

  • Comprehensive Lesson Plan
  • "Language" Sheet for students to fill out
  • 6 Corresponding "Language Quote" signs to hang up around your room

French Conversation Lesson La Randonnée Reading, Writing, Listening, Speaking

By Love Learning Languages - French Resources

Looking for a way to show your students how real daily French conversations flow? This comprehensive French lesson will have your students reading, writing, listening, and speaking. The theme of this lesson is la randonnée. They'll get lots of exposure to real spoken French, while working on the four skills we strive to include in every lesson.

Included:

⭐  Video in French and English

⭐  Audio in French only

⭐  Fill in the blank exercise

⭐  Transcript in French

⭐  Role play situation in English

⭐  Useful sentences + expressions

La Randonnée - Hiking in the mountains

  • You are out hiking along a trail in the mountains, and you lose your balance and fall down. You may have sprained your ankle, and you can’t walk. Fortunately, you have your phone with you! You decide it would be a good idea to call a friend for help and to see if he can come and pick you up.

In the video, students will listen and read along as a typical French dialogue unfolds during une randonnée in France.

As students listen to the conversation, listening comprehension will improve, and they will learn lots of new vocabulary words and expressions. This is really the way French people interact, though it may never have shown up in the textbook!

The video lasts approximately two minutes, and it is easy to pause so that everyone has a chance to study the text.

The speech is not too fast in this video, and all of the words are written on the screen in French and with English translations.

The grammar in this conversation is quite varied. However, French learners at any level can learn a lot and benefit from these conversations through context. Your students will find the English translations to be most helpful, and they will see how it is nearly impossible to give direct translations from French to English.

LESSON PLAN (as you explain it to students):

Step 1: Watch the video and read along as you listen to the conversation. When you don't understand a word, just look down at the English translation. Be sure to take notes! It's ok if you don't understand all of the grammar. Just try to pay close attention to how the sentences are put together and how we do it differently in English.

Step 2: Listen to the audio recording without looking at the words and translations on the video. Do you remember what the words mean? You can use this recording to practice and fine tune your listening skills

Step 3: Print out the fill in the blank exercise, and write in the missing words as you listen to the recording. An answer key is provided. Once you have done this a few times, I challenge you to get out a blank sheet of paper and try writing it all! Just have that pause button ready!

Step 4: Read over the role play situation with a partner. Study the page with helpful French sentences and expressions, and invent your own dialogue. You can use some of what you learned in the video in your conversation!

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ "My students loved using this for being able to help them have conversations in class. Great resource!"

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ "This was fantastic, merci! More like this please!!!!"

  6. Short Answer: Provide an opportunity for students to apply the vocabulary in meaningful ways. By constructing responses, students connect the vocabulary to specific contexts, demonstrating their understanding of how the words are used. This application helps with recall and enhances their ability to use it effectively.
  7. Creative Writing: Students draw from previous language knowledge to create complete sentences relevant to the new vocabulary. This is a slightly more advanced activity that allows students to use higher-level thinking and creativity to form sentences using verb tenses and additional they are familiar with.
  8. Code Breaker: Decoding the vocabulary is like solving a puzzle. It encourages critical thinking and problem-solving skills as learners work to match the symbols to the correct letters to form vocabulary while providing ongoing review and reinforcement.

Keep your students engaged and quietly learning even if your substitute has ZERO French skills!

*Answer key is included only for the Secret Message and Short Answer activities. Answers will vary for other activities.

French Conversation - La Station Service - Reading, Writing, Listening, Speaking

By Love Learning Languages - French Resources

Looking for a way to show your students how real daily French conversations flow? This comprehensive French lesson will have your students reading, writing, listening, and speaking. The theme of this lesson is à la station service. They'll get lots of exposure to real spoken French, while working on the four skills we strive to include in every lesson.

Included:

⭐  Video in French and English

⭐  Audio in French only

⭐  Fill in the blank exercise

⭐  Transcript in French

⭐  Role play situation in English

⭐  Useful sentences + expressions

À la station service - Buying gas

  • You and a friend are driving around France in your rental car, and you notice that you’re almost out gas. You are both keeping your eyes open for the nearest service station. You see one, and you pull in. You get out of the car, and just before you start to fill up the tank, your friend notices that you’re about to fill up with diesel!! You need unleaded!

In the video, students will listen and read along as a typical French dialogue unfolds à la station service in France.

French Comprehensible Input Lesson Le Président Américain

By Frenchified

Make learning French fun with this simple, comprehensible input French lesson plan and story. This lesson plan includes a story with targeted structures that can be repeated to give your students lots of repetitions. Comprehension activities to use after the story will allow you to engage your students and makes sure that your French lesson is truly comprehensible input.

The American President may be powerful, but he isn't happy. He'd much rather be singing. He wants to be better than the best - and he flies around the world to prove it. But can he succeed at achieving his dream job? There are four targeted vocabulary structures that are used multiple times throughout the story. The targeted structures are:

  • rend visite

  • mieux que

  • veut changer

  • la Maison-Blanche
