There is always some prep for the lessons, but most everything is done for you: printable (not worksheets; they are printable the students use to interact ), introduction, list of materials needed, objectives, process, closure, etc.

Once you open the zip file, you will see all the lessons. Some are PDFs and others are zip files that you must open up to obtain all the parts to the lesson. i.e Push and Pull Factors is a zip file. Once opened, you will be able to access the Powerpoint, Pdf Lesson, etc. This is a very larger file, so it make take some time to download. The Steps:

1. A central statement will be announced to the class and we will define the two sides

of the debate (Agree/Disagree).

2. You will move to the side

of the room with the position that you intend to defend.

3. A timer will be set for 5 minutes, and the debate will start between the two groups.

4. Be concise and attempt to keep you contributions to less than 30 seconds each. The goal is to have an up-tempo debate, where the arguments for and against the prompt are batted back and forth with quick, verbal strokes. When the timer goes off, the conversation is immediately over.

5. A new prompt is displayed and we start another round of quick debates.

• Haunted: In the second task, students must correctly identify the figurative language devices used in the chilling poem, Haunted by Siegfried Sassoon. Shaded boxes within the answers will reveal the second code.
• Watch Your Tone: In the third task, students will read 6 excerpts from Halloween-inspired poems by authors like Edgar Allan Poe, Shakespeare, and Lord Byron and identify the tone of each poem. When cards are matched correctly, shaded letters will reveal the code.
• The Witch: In the fourth task, students must perform a close reading of Mary Elizabeth Coleridge's famously dark poem, The Witch. The letters of the multiple choice questions about the poem will form the fourth code.... "Let me in at the door!"
• Pop Quiz: In the final task, students must complete a crossword puzzle using information they learned from the first four tasks. Circled letters within the crossword will reveal the final code. Once they bring that to you, they may escape the haunted house of horrors.

DIRECTIONS:

• Access your forced copy of the Google Doc with the story, The Landlady on the second slide.

• Go to the last slide to add your own discussion prompts.

• Click "File" then "Download" and then "PDF" to download the prompts as a PDF document.

• Print, cut, and laminate a set of cards for each of your groups of 4-5 students.

• Print, cut, and laminate talking chips.

• Put students into groups of 4-5.

• Decide how many talking chips each student gets (this encourages participation during the dialogue and teaches students how to use social cues when deciding when to share, instead of raising a hand).

• One student draws a card from the top. That student asks the question and dialogue begins in the group. Students should have the short story handy so they can use evidence in their responses.

• When dialogue dies down, students continue taking turns drawing a card, asking questions. and having discussions.

• Students should discard the questions already asked so they don't repeat any.

• Figuratively Speaking: In the first task, students must identify figurative language devices within the story.
• Plot it Out: In the second task, students must order the plot events of Marionettes, Inc. on Freytag's Pyramid.
• Crossword Puzzle: In the third task, students must solve a crossword puzzle with questions about characters, literary elements, quotes, and plot events.
• Vocab Match Up: In the fourth task, students fill in the blanks with vocabulary words from the story.
• Word Search: In the final task, students must complete a word search using the codes they discovered in the first four tasks. The letters that remain form a quote that aligns with themes of the story. Once they figure it out and bring it to you, students may escape Braling's basement!
