Activity:
Students can complete all three worksheets in each set as part of a sub packet, but if you don't see them for a full block then assign only one page each day you're out (you'll get even more bang for your buck!) If you teach allusion, alliteration, idiom, or onomatopoeia, you can ask students to include those in Task 2 where they will be asked to continue the passage using a similar writing style. I have left some blanks on the checklist for this very purpose.

This book series is great for children ages 7 - 13, as they can relate with what Frank and Joe are doing and what mystery they are attempting to solve. The book, The HBs - A Monster of Mystery - Book 5, discusses problem solving skills, working together, cheering others on, not accusing others without evidence, problem solving, figuring out the truth, being honest, and being a good friend/sibling. The comprehension questions in this product relate with the text as well as students own experiences. Vocabulary words, their meanings, and example sentences are presented in the product. Students can also write sentences using the vocabulary words.

As the book is being read aloud, as students are reading the book or after the book has been read, students can answer the comprehension questions in this packet. Words that students may need help with spelling when answering comprehension questions are provided in this product as well.

This is a powerpoint presentation that introduces close reading skills of informational texts to students. I created this product last year in order to align with Common Core Standards. Powerpoint reviews the definition of close reading then outlines the 4 major steps of close reading: START WITH THE END IN MIND, NUMBER PARAGRAPHS, "CHUNK" TEXT, and ANNOTATE. My student feedback has been very positive as this is a structured and straightforward approach to close reading informational texts. This powerpoint serves as an excellent introduction to the kind of close reading students need to do for the PARCC test as well as for the Common Core. How to incorporate this powerpoint into your own lessons: Begin by introducing close reading skills with this powerpoint. Then, pass out a short article (I find mine at Kelly Gallagher's Article of the week http://www.kellygallagher.org/article-of-the-week) and model the steps with your students. I put the article up on the SMARTBoard and hand out a copy to each student so we can do it together. This Figurative Language Short Passage Set is a no-prep, printable close reading activity that's perfect for middle school and high school. This is a 210-word passage filled with 19 examples of figurative language, such as hyperbole, metaphor, simile, and personification. I’ve found that although my students can tell me the definition of these terms, simile is the only one they can truly pick out in a text. As a result, their writing is filled with overused similes that need work! This figurative language passage set is rigorous, uses higher-level words and phrases, and in addition to merely identifying the different types, students will be asked to discuss the impact it has on the reader, as they’re asked to do on standardized testing.

Simply print and go! There is truly no preparation needed, which is why this set is perfect to leave for sub plans, bell ringers, homework, test prep, review or assessment!

*As an optional review activity, use my No-prep Four Corners Figurative Language Activity resource for a fun whole-group game, then use this passage set for assessment!

Activity:
Students can complete all three worksheets as part of a packet, but I suggest using one each day. If you teach allusion, alliteration, idiom, or onomatopoeia, you can ask students to include those in Task 2 where they will be asked to continue the passage using a similar writing style. I have left some blanks on the checklist for this very purpose.

Reflection:
The class can review the answers and comments as a whole group when the activity is complete. You’ll be surprised how much better they’ll get at figurative language after being exposed to some high-quality examples!

The graphic novel, Frizzy - The Graphic Novel by Claribel A Ortega is great for children ages 9 - 15 years old, as they can relate with the main character, Marlene as she figures out who she is, what she likes, and who she wants to be. This is a book about friendship, developing interests, finding oneself, starting something new, being a good friend, being different from others and embracing those differences, standing up for oneself, and doing what is best for you. Comprehension questions, fill in the blank questions, and multiple choice questions are provided in this product and are separated by the books chapters.

The comprehension questions in this product relate with the text as well as students own experiences. Vocabulary words, their meanings, and a few example sentences are presented in the packet. As the book is being read aloud, as students are reading the book or after the book has been read, students can answer the comprehension questions in this packet. This Figurative Language Short Passage Set is a no-prep, printable close reading activity that's perfect for middle school and high school. Use it during Black History Month or any day of the year! Featuring Rosa Parks, this is a 216-word passage filled with 15 examples of figurative language, such as hyperbole, metaphor, simile, and personification. I’ve found that although my students can tell me the definition of these terms, simile is the only one they can truly pick out in a text. As a result, their writing is filled with overused similes that need work! This figurative language passage set is rigorous, uses higher-level words and phrases, and in addition to merely identifying the different types, students will be asked to discuss the impact it has on the reader, as they’re asked to do on standardized testing. Simply print and go! There is truly no preparation needed, which is why this set is perfect to leave for sub plans, bell ringers, homework, test prep, review or assessment!

Activity:
Students can complete all three worksheets as part of a packet, but I suggest using one each day. If you teach allusion, alliteration, idiom, or onomatopoeia, you can ask students to include those in Task 2 where they will be asked to continue the passage using a similar writing style. I have left some blanks on the checklist for this very purpose.

Reflection:
The class can review the answers and comments as a whole group when the activity is complete. You’ll be surprised how much better they’ll get at figurative language after being exposed to some high-quality examples!

The graphic novel, Katie the Catsitter Book #1 - The Graphic Novel by Colleen AF Venable and Stephanie Yue is great for children ages 9 - 15 years old, as they can relate with the main character, Katie as she figures out who she is, what she likes, and who she wants to be. This is a book about friendship, developing interests, finding oneself, starting something new, being a good friend, being different from others and embracing those differences, and doing what is best for you. Comprehension questions, fill in the blank questions, and multiple choice questions are provided in this product and are separated by the books 15 chapters.

The comprehension questions in this product relate with the text as well as students own experiences. Vocabulary words, their meanings, and a few example sentences are presented in the packet. As the book is being read aloud, as students are reading the book or after the book has been read, students can answer the comprehension questions in this packet.
