But when Wollstonecraft gave birth to Mary Shelley, she became infected with sepsis and died shortly thereafter. Is it any accident that Mary Shelley would write a novel about a protagonist who is repulsed by his own offspring? To what extent did Shelley perceive herself as a kind of monster? These and many other questions get students thinking about the relation between Mary Shelley's turbulent life and her literary masterpiece. (2 pages)

• Themes in Frankenstein (Pre-Reading Handout): Because the full title of Shelley's novel is Frankenstein; or, The Modern Prometheus, this handout introduces students to the Prometheus myth and challenges students to ponder how Shelley might have sought to update or rewrite the myth for the modern era. What happens when humans develop technologies — like Prometheus's act of stealing fire — that should remain the rightful provenance of nature? Should characters like Prometheus and Frankenstein be admired as rebellious heroes? Or should they be despised as an arrogant overreachers? Get students thinking before they even crack the cover of Shelley's novel! (2 pages)

• Discussion Question Handouts: Thirty pages of higher-order discussion questions guaranteed to inspire profoundly thoughtful class discussions! If you teach allusion, alliteration, idiom, or onomatopoeia, you can ask students to include those in Task 2 where they will be asked to continue the passage using a similar writing style. I have left some blanks on the checklist for this very purpose.

Reflection:
The class can review the answers and comments as a whole group when the activity is complete. You’ll be surprised how much better they’ll get at figurative language after being exposed to some high-quality examples!

Planning an escape room may seem like quite the daunting task, but this product provides everything from the basics and set-up instructions to signs and answer keys so that yours runs smoothly from start to finish. The activity involves movement, energy, creative thinking and most of all, collaboration. How does it work?

Instead of entering your classroom, your students have shown up to one of the extravagant parties at the Gatsby mansion. They are surrounded by people dancing, drinking, and acting as if they have not a care in the world. But then they notice a man that looks as if he does not fit in with the crowd. He dons overalls and his face is covered in grease…and he grips a revolver tightly with his right hand. Now your students must locate Gatsby within his mansion before this mechanic on a mission gets to him! The only way to escape is by solving 5 different skills-based puzzles, discovering a hidden message, and finding clues along the way.

• Gatsby F.I.T.B.: In the first task, students must complete fill-in-the-blank sentences using vocabulary words from the novel. The vocabulary cards, once assembled correctly, will reveal the first code.
• Guess Who: In the second task, students must match each character from The Great Gatsby with one of their notable quotes from the novel by drawing a line connecting them. Letters not intersected by these lines will form their second code word.
• Plot it Out: In the third task, students must order the major plot points of The Great Gatsby on Freytag's Pyramid. When ordered correctly, letters in the shaded boxes on the chart form their third code.
• Criss-Cross: In the fourth task, students must complete a crossword puzzle about major plot points, characters, setting, and quotes from the novel. Circled letters within the crossword, once unscrambled, reveal their fourth code.
• Missing Word: In the final task, students must assemble a jig saw puzzle that forms a notable quote from the novel with one missing word. Once the puzzle is assembled and students figure out the missing word, they may escape the room and save Gatsby!

The graphic novel, Katie the Catsitter Book #1 - The Graphic Novel by Colleen AF Venable and Stephanie Yue is great for children ages 9 - 15 years old, as they can relate with the main character, Katie as she figures out who she is, what she likes, and who she wants to be. This is a book about friendship, developing interests, finding oneself, starting something new, being a good friend, being different from others and embracing those differences, and doing what is best for you. Comprehension questions, fill in the blank questions, and multiple choice questions are provided in this product and are separated by the books 15 chapters.

The comprehension questions in this product relate with the text as well as students own experiences. Vocabulary words, their meanings, and a few example sentences are presented in the packet. This St. Patrick's Day Figurative Language Short Passage Set is a no-prep, printable close reading activity that's perfect for middle school and high school. Use it for St. Patrick's Day or any day! This is a 207-word passage filled with 14 examples of figurative language, such as hyperbole, metaphor, simile, and personification. I’ve found that although my students can tell me the definition of these terms, simile is the only one they can truly pick out in a text. As a result, their writing is filled with overused similes that need work! This figurative language passage set is rigorous, uses higher-level words and phrases, and in addition to merely identifying the different types, students will be asked to discuss the impact it has on the reader, as they’re asked to do on standardized testing. Simply print and go! There is truly no preparation needed, which is why this set is perfect to leave for sub plans, bell ringers, homework, test prep, review or assessment!

Activity:
Students can complete all three worksheets as part of a packet, but I suggest using one each day. If you teach allusion, alliteration, idiom, or onomatopoeia, you can ask students to include those in Task 2 where they will be asked to continue the passage using a similar writing style. I have left some blanks on the checklist for this very purpose.

Reflection:
The class can review the answers and comments as a whole group when the activity is complete. You’ll be surprised how much better they’ll get at figurative language after being exposed to some high-quality examples!

This is a powerpoint presentation that introduces close reading skills of informational texts to students. I created this product last year in order to align with Common Core Standards. Powerpoint reviews the definition of close reading then outlines the 4 major steps of close reading: START WITH THE END IN MIND, NUMBER PARAGRAPHS, "CHUNK" TEXT, and ANNOTATE. My student feedback has been very positive as this is a structured and straightforward approach to close reading informational texts. This powerpoint serves as an excellent introduction to the kind of close reading students need to do for the PARCC test as well as for the Common Core. How to incorporate this powerpoint into your own lessons: Begin by introducing close reading skills with this powerpoint. Then, pass out a short article (I find mine at Kelly Gallagher's Article of the week http://www.kellygallagher.org/article-of-the-week) and model the steps with your students. I put the article up on the SMARTBoard and hand out a copy to each student so we can do it together.
