How we use this in class:

My students now know that we read the passage first together as a group. We decode. We explore. We segment words. Blend them all so we are confident.

Next, we do activities with the sound blends themselves. Using a highlighter, students race to find all the target sound words in the text. I don’t know about you but my student LOVE highlighters! After that, students used the lined window to write all the target sound words so they’re sure they have them all. Then, we do a little exercise where we try to explain what happened in the story in as few words as possible.

The very last step is to draw a picture of what is happening in the text. Students can do most or all this activity pack on their own in the Grade One and Grade Two Immersion setting. It’s a great way to have them build confidence all while giving you the time to work with small groups at the back of your class!

Who can use this resource:

Teachers who are just getting accustomed to using strategies from the Science of Reading can use these simple texts to open up independent practice, small group evaluation, or up on a digital screen for whole group instruction and reading practice.

Make a set and send them home with students to build fluency in reading and confidence in reading strategies.

Texts are designed to build a number of common French sounds and get more challenging as they go on.

Correction sheet is handy for use with a substitute as they can confidently assess students and command the lesson even when they are not assured of their French skills.

What grade level:

I personally use these texts with Grade 1 and Grade 2 students in French Immersion. I feel confident that students from K-3 will find these most useful and teachers can come back to the texts with any students who may be experiencing challenges in their French reading skills. Core French teachers will be sure to add the resource to their repertoire for Grades 4 to 6 as they learn to read and write at the Junior level.

Science of Reading:

These texts are aligned with sounds being taught in any Science of Reading aligned curriculum. They are set up for student success based on the research for increasing reading fluency and building student confidence in the classroom!

Once you have established the strategies for identifying sounds, initial sounds, and blending sounds, segmenting sounds, students will be able to use these self-driven passages on their own. What a great way to build learning autonomy!

Perfect beginning reading for those that are starting on their French speaking journey. This a great lesson for substitutes or fast finishers. Can be used as independent reading for FVR on day 1.

Because students can use this as an independent learner, the resource is great for part of sub plans or fast finishers.

Taboo is a fun French speaking and listening game where one student has to guess a word based on clues given in French by other students. The catch is that they cannot mention anything that is included in a list of taboo words.

70 French-English cards are included and include foods from these categories: des produits laitiers, des céréales, de la viande, des fruits, des légumes, des boissons et des sucreries.

Classic French Taboo Games Bundle - 3 Versions

Object of the game:

One player tries to get his teammate to guess the word at the top of a card. The player must give clues, but he can't use any of the Taboo words in his description. The taboo words are written beneath the underlined word at the top of the card.

Teams score points for each word successfully guessed. The team with the most points at the end of the game wins.

Beginner students should be allowed to use the French TABOO words printed on the cards. This will encourage them to use new vocabulary and will help them in forming sentences to use as clues.

This French reading comprehension activity will teach your students about the upcoming World Cup soccer competition and the controversies surrounding it. Learn about the history of the Coupe du Monde, how the tournament is set up, and what is coming in future tournaments.

This French reading activity includes two versions of the article - one for novice learners (more basic vocabulary, simple tenses), and one for intermediate and advanced learners (includes imparfait, passé composé and expanded vocabulary). No matter which version you use with your students, the comprehension questions in French and English will allow them to show you that they've understood. This French reading comprehension activity will teach your students about the big song contest that takes place every year and gets all of Europe excited! This year the contest will be hosted by Turin, Italy and will take place between May 7-11.

This French reading activity includes three versions of the article - one for novice learners, one for intermediate learners (includes more past tense and expanded vocabulary) and one for advanced learners (includes the subjunctive and other more complex verb tenses). No matter which version you use with your students, the comprehension questions in French and English will allow them to show you that they've understood. Each reading includes a glossary at the bottom of each page.

Core French teachers will be sure to add the resource to their repertoire for Grades 4 to 6 as they learn to communicate at the Junior level.

We all have students with IEPs who need that extra boost to build confidence and to lessen anxieties about what is happening in class. 30 DIFFERENT AWARDS! This resource is a great way to end the year and to acknowledge each student for their unique abilities. The best part of being in a CI classroom is the community it builds. Choose the awards yourself or have the students vote using the Google Form for Student Voting. Each award has the French feminine and masculine forms. The awards can be applied to French class or simply observations about students in other areas of their lives. Let the students know that they have been seen for more than what is going on while they are in your room.

Note: The award for proficiency levels progressed is an award that I, as the teacher, would give but if you feel like students are able to give it, you can leave it on the google form. The google form can be edited and it is not necessary to give every award.
