How we use this in class:

My students now know that we read the passage first together as a group. We decode. We explore. We segment words. Blend them all so we are confident.

Next, we do activities with the sound blends themselves. Using a highlighter, students race to find all the target sound words in the text. I don’t know about you but my student LOVE highlighters! After that, students used the lined window to write all the target sound words so they’re sure they have them all. Then, we do a little exercise where we try to explain what happened in the story in as few words as possible.

The very last step is to draw a picture of what is happening in the text. Students can do most or all this activity pack on their own in the Grade One and Grade Two Immersion setting. It’s a great way to have them build confidence all while giving you the time to work with small groups at the back of your class!

Who can use this resource:

Teachers who are just getting accustomed to using strategies from the Science of Reading can use these simple texts to open up independent practice, small group evaluation, or up on a digital screen for whole group instruction and reading practice.

Make a set and send them home with students to build fluency in reading and confidence in reading strategies.

Texts are designed to build a number of common French sounds and get more challenging as they go on.

Correction sheet is handy for use with a substitute as they can confidently assess students and command the lesson even when they are not assured of their French skills.

What grade level:

I personally use these texts with Grade 1 and Grade 2 students in French Immersion. I feel confident that students from K-3 will find these most useful and teachers can come back to the texts with any students who may be experiencing challenges in their French reading skills. Core French teachers will be sure to add the resource to their repertoire for Grades 4 to 6 as they learn to read and write at the Junior level.

Science of Reading:

These texts are aligned with sounds being taught in any Science of Reading aligned curriculum. They are set up for student success based on the research for increasing reading fluency and building student confidence in the classroom!

Once you have established the strategies for identifying sounds, initial sounds, and blending sounds, segmenting sounds, students will be able to use these self-driven passages on their own. What a great way to build learning autonomy!

French Verb Être Scrambled Sentences - Cut, Paste, Write, Draw - 30 Worksheets

This is a no-prep, print and go set of 30 worksheets using the French verb être in the present tense. Each worksheet includes 8 words that students put in order to form a sentence. Your students will enjoy cutting out the words, putting them in order, pasting them on the paper, writing their sentences, and drawing pictures to illustrate what they've written.

An answer key is provided. Check out the preview for a closer look at how to use these worksheets in your classroom and to see all of the sentences that are included.

The following directions are written in English on each worksheet:

1. Cut this sheet in half on the dotted line.
2. Cut out all of the following words.
3. Put the words in order to form a sentence before pasting them.
4. Glue the words you cut out in order to form a sentence.
5. Write your sentence on the lines below. Capitalize the first letter and use punctuation.
6. Draw and color a picture to illustrate your sentence.

50 French Simple Negation Speaking and Listening Cards

This resource includes 50 simple negation speaking cards that you can cut out and have students use in pairs or small groups. I recommend printing out and laminating these cards if possible so that you can use them over and over again. I've also included a PDF with only one card per page for projecting or using with tablets when you want to do a whole class activity or paired work without printing.

This resource is included in my French Negation Bundle.

On each card there is a question for student #1 to ask to student #2. The assumed answer is written on the card, but students should be reminded that sometimes more than one answer is possible.

Since there are so many cards included, this activity can last a while and give your students an opportunity to really practice a lot.

These are questions and answers to practice simple negation in the present, passé composé and futur proche tenses. Just pull out the ones you're not quite ready to use given your students' current level.

This French reading comprehension activity will teach your students about the invention and use of the guillotine. It is suitable for novice-high/intermediate-low students with teacher guidance and higher-level students to work independently.  If you teach AP French, this reading can be useful in giving your students practice reading nonfiction articles for the interpretive section of the test.  The reading can lead to discussion or writing activities to include the other two modes of communication.

The guillotine is a scary reminder of a horrific time in history - streets running red with blood, severed heads held up before the cheering crowds. But its invention was for humane reasons, and the French weren't the only ones to use it. Learn about the history of this machine of death in this reading for intermediate/advanced French learners.

Do you find it nearly impossible to find French grammar based reading, writing, speaking, and listening activities?  The focus on specific grammar themes seems to get pushed aside when you want to incorporate all of the other skills.  This is a set of four booklets based on the French verb être and expressions with être. 

When you’re teaching the verb être, you may not want everything you do to be absolutely grammar based, because that can become boring.
