Use this Reading Response Assignment and Battle Royale style activity to teach about Bushcraft and Primitive Survival Techniques while reinforcing simple geographical knowledge about world geography and the basic biomes of the world. Any fan of fortnite or other battle royale style video games will love this assignment! But even the students who don't play fortnite will enjoy making their battle royale survival plan.
I normally use this assignment during my Ancient History unit on early humans as a way to help students understand the hardship of surviving without modern technology. I've also used it directly after my unit on the Fall of Rome when we discuss the collapse of civilization before diving into Feudalism in Europe.
Really this assignment is a plug and play that you can use in many different class periods. Thinking tactically about survival never goes out of style, and students are always engaged during this assignment. I've also used it as a last minute sub plan and have never gotten a bad note!

This Figurative Language Short Passage Set is a no-prep, printable close reading activity that's perfect for middle school and high school. This is a 205-word passage filled with 14 examples of figurative language, such as hyperbole, metaphor, simile, and personification. I’ve found that although my students can tell me the definition of these terms, simile is the only one they can truly pick out in a text. As a result, their writing is filled with overused similes that need work! This figurative language passage set is rigorous, uses higher-level words and phrases, and in addition to merely identifying the different types, students will be asked to discuss the impact it has on the reader, as they’re asked to do on standardized testing. Simply print and go! There is truly no preparation needed, which is why this set is perfect to leave for sub plans, bell ringers, homework, test prep, review or assessment!

Activity:
Students can complete all three worksheets as part of a packet, but I suggest using one each day. If you teach allusion, alliteration, idiom, or onomatopoeia, you can ask students to include those in Task 2 where they will be asked to continue the passage using a similar writing style. I have left some blanks on the checklist for this very purpose.
Reflection:
The class can review the answers and comments as a whole group when the activity is complete. You’ll be surprised how much better they’ll get at figurative language after being exposed to some high-quality examples!

Love in its many forms is the most important theme in *A Midsummer Night’s Dream. *The romantic encounters and subsequent confusions are the greatest cause of conflict in the play.
The play gives us variations on the theme of love – idyllic young love in the case of Hermia and Lysander; passionate and possessive love between Titania and Oberon; love lost and found again as with Helena and Demetrius; love as conquest as in the case of Theseus and Hippolyta. Shakespeare makes a point of infusing A Midsummer Night’s Dream with more than just a two-dimensional notion of romantic love – he shows us the darker side where we see love’s inconstancy, its violence, its possessiveness, and its illusory nature.
This lesson plan is designed specifically for Shakespeare's classic comedy. It lasts approximately 90 minutes (depending on the class size) and has activities for all types of learners. The photocopiable student sheet with the activities is included, as well as a separate sheet with the answers.

Students can answer these questions as the book is read or after they have finished reading the book or listening to the book. While reading this book and answering these questions, students will learn about pollution, endangered animals, surviving in our environment, importance of clean air, water, and healthy soil to grow food, planting trees when trees are cut down, ecology, conservation, recycling, reducing pollution in your community, things to recycle, and how to help your environment. In this packet, students can also complete a mini endangered animal report where they will be required to chose an endangered animal from the list provided and answer questions about that animal, such as where it lives (habitat), what it eats, how long it lives for, interesting facts about that animal, etc. Students can answer the short answer questions, yes/no questions, multiple choice questions, and vocabulary/picture labeling questions as the book is read to them, as they read the book independently or they can use the text for lookbacks once the book is finished. Vocabulary words, their meanings, and examples of the words used in sentences are presented. Students have the opportunity to use those words in sentences as well.

Figurative Language Short Passage Set | St. Patrick's Day | Close Reading

This St. Patrick's Day Figurative Language Short Passage Set is a no-prep, printable close reading activity that's perfect for middle school and high school. Use it for St. Patrick's Day or any day! This is a 207-word passage filled with 14 examples of figurative language, such as hyperbole, metaphor, simile, and personification. I’ve found that although my students can tell me the definition of these terms, simile is the only one they can truly pick out in a text. As a result, their writing is filled with overused similes that need work! This figurative language passage set is rigorous, uses higher-level words and phrases, and in addition to merely identifying the different types, students will be asked to discuss the impact it has on the reader, as they’re asked to do on standardized testing. Simply print and go! There is truly no preparation needed, which is why this set is perfect to leave for sub plans, bell ringers, homework, test prep, review or assessment!

Activity:
Students can complete all three worksheets as part of a packet, but I suggest using one each day. If you teach allusion, alliteration, idiom, or onomatopoeia, you can ask students to include those in Task 2 where they will be asked to continue the passage using a similar writing style. I have left some blanks on the checklist for this very purpose.
Reflection:
The class can review the answers and comments as a whole group when the activity is complete. You’ll be surprised how much better they’ll get at figurative language after being exposed to some high-quality examples!

This 90-minute lesson plan is designed for high school students (Grades 9–12) studying Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein.
