This is a 206-word passage filled with 14 examples of figurative language, such as \x3Cstrong>hyperbole, metaphor, simile, and personification\x3C/strong>. I’ve found that although my students can tell me the definition of these terms, \x3Cem>simile\x3C/em> is the only one they can truly pick out in a text. As a result, their writing is filled with overused similes that need work! This figurative language passage set is \x3Cstrong>rigorous\x3C/strong>, uses higher-level words and phrases, and in addition to merely identifying the different types, students will be asked to discuss the impact it has on the reader, as they’re asked to do on standardized testing. Check out my other figurative language passage sets \x3Cstrong>HERE!\x3C/strong>\x3Cp>Simply print and go! There is truly no preparation needed, which is why this set is perfect to leave for \x3Cstrong>sub plans, bell ringers, homework, test prep, review or assessment\x3C/strong>!\x3Cp>*As an optional review activity, use my No-prep \x3Cstrong>Four Corners Figurative Language Activity\x3C/strong> resource for a fun whole-group game, then use this passage set for assessment!\x3Cp>\x3Cstrong>Activity:\x3C/strong>\x3Cbr>Students can complete all three worksheets as part of a packet, but I suggest using one each day. Are you looking for an introduction lesson for teaching main idea? Are your students struggling with main idea and supporting details or just Listening skills in general? The secret to getting the main idea is to teach the student to identify the topic, and then teach the student to identify what the purpose of the narrative was (Entertain/ Inform/ Persuade/ Instruct).
This is A 36 card/slide Lesson with 36 multiple choice prompts and 36 open-ended prompts which allow you to determine if the student can grasp the main idea. Narratives get progressively more complex as the student moves through the cards. A 4 page PDF assessment in included.
The cards work well with any students grades 6-10 or best when used with students who have mild cognitive delays yet basic language skills. An independent lesson will take about 30 minutes however if you are using it as a teaching tool during instruction the lesson can easily fill 60 minutes with breaks in between for group discussion.

Use this Reading Response Assignment and Battle Royale style activity to teach about Bushcraft and Primitive Survival Techniques while reinforcing simple geographical knowledge about world geography and the basic biomes of the world. Any fan of fortnite or other battle royale style video games will love this assignment! But even the students who don't play fortnite will enjoy making their battle royale survival plan.
I normally use this assignment during my Ancient History unit on early humans as a way to help students understand the hardship of surviving without modern technology. I've also used it directly after my unit on the Fall of Rome when we discuss the collapse of civilization before diving into Feudalism in Europe.
Really this assignment is a plug and play that you can use in many different class periods. Thinking tactically about survival never goes out of style, and students are always engaged during this assignment. I've also used it as a last minute sub plan and have never gotten a bad note!

Figurative Language Short Passage | Set 2 | Close Reading | ELA Writing Activity
By Perfectly Planned Designs
This Figurative Language Short Passage Set is a no-prep, printable close reading activity that's perfect for middle school and high school. This is a 206-word passage filled with 14 examples of figurative language, such as hyperbole, metaphor, simile, and personification. I’ve found that although my students can tell me the definition of these terms, simile is the only one they can truly pick out in a text. As a result, their writing is filled with overused similes that need work! This figurative language passage set is rigorous, uses higher-level words and phrases, and in addition to merely identifying the different types, students will be asked to discuss the impact it has on the reader, as they’re asked to do on standardized testing. Check out my other figurative language passage sets HERE!
Simply print and go! There is truly no preparation needed, which is why this set is perfect to leave for sub plans, bell ringers, homework, test prep, review or assessment!
*As an optional review activity, use my No-prep Four Corners Figurative Language Activity resource for a fun whole-group game, then use this passage set for assessment!
Activity:
Students can complete all three worksheets as part of a packet, but I suggest using one each day. If you teach allusion, alliteration, idiom, or onomatopoeia, you can ask students to include those in Task 2 where they will be asked to continue the passage using a similar writing style. I have left some blanks on the checklist for this very purpose.
Reflection:
The class can review the answers and comments as a whole group when the activity is complete. You’ll be surprised how much better they’ll get at figurative language after being exposed to some high-quality examples!

Guided Reading Lesson Plan & Activities for Grade 5
By Bright Classroom Ideas Marketplace
Teaching guided reading in 5th grade is one of the most rewarding aspects of teaching this grade. The standards and text levels are more rigorous than in primary grades, and the students are much more independent. The books they read are more engaging, making the teaching experience enjoyable.
When actively in the classroom, use a flexible approach that promotes student choice and variety, paired with explicit instruction and engaging reading practice. Try to teach reading in a way that promotes discussion and enjoyment of reading.
Focus on three key areas:
1. Learning to Read: Developing or growing skills to decode and comprehend grade-level texts.
2. Reading to Learn: Acquiring the skills needed to extract details and information from a text or story and synthesizing it.
3. Reading to Analyze: Building on reading to learn by focusing on specific skills and then being able to write about them.
This ebook contains a detailed 90-minute lesson plan and activities for your Grade 5 students. Suggested answers are provided as well.
