Figurative Language Short Passage Sets are a no-prep, printable close reading activity that's perfect for middle school and high school. Each passage has between 206-226 words and is filled with between 14-19 examples of figurative language, such as hyperbole, metaphor, simile, and personification. I’ve found that although my students can tell me the definition of these terms, simile is the only one they can truly pick out in a text. As a result, their writing is filled with overused similes that need work! - Students create an "All About Me" digital collage by following the directions in the slides and using the example provided. Then share their design with an AVID classmate and explain why they picked each image.
- Students complete a selfie partner scavenger hunt with a partner around the school.
- Students open the linked Summer Break Bingo template and type in different activities they did over the summer. Then they find classmates who did the same activities and add their names to the bingo card.
Organization
- Students print out their school map and use a highlighter to draw a route to all their classes and follow the directions to label their maps.

After reading each figurative language example on the board, move to the side of the room labeled “Metaphor,” “Simile,” “Hyperbole,” or “Personification.” Be prepared to defend your choices. You may disagree with your classmates’ opinions but do so respectfully. (I typically go over each example with students and discuss the impact of the words or phrases to uncover the deeper meaning. Ask questions such as, "what is being compared?" or "what can the reader visualize?")

Once they are finished, they can share it with different groups of people and have their friends play each character. This packet includes information to share with your students about what a play is, what steps to follow when writing the beginning, middle and end of a play, why we write a play, who we write a play for, and tips to look for when rereading and editing. This packet also includes an example showing the process that is used to write with a play using a graphic organizer and an example of a play. ESL Emergency Vocabulary Words Workbook for Newcomers

In this product, students will learn the English vocabulary words for the different emergency items presented. Students will initially write each vocabulary word in their native language and after learning the English word, students will complete different emergency items vocabulary review where they will be required to fill in the English and their native language word for different emergency vocabulary words. I tend to use that section as a quiz. I will read the word aloud and the students will then write the English word and the word in their native language. Pictures are included for each vocabulary word to help students make connections with each emergency word. Students can do this independently or with help. Students will be required to answer a few comprehension questions that relate with the importance of safety skills, what to do if they are in an emergency, who to call in an emergency, and complete an emergency vocabulary review.

Halloween Collaborative Writing Activity

This resource features a creative lesson plan that will actually keep your candy-filled students quiet and engaged on Halloween!
Halloween Collaborative Story Time is a communal story-telling activity in which students practice using Freytag's Pyramid plot structure in their own narrative writing. In this activity, each student begins a story inspired by a unique Halloween-themed photograph. They are prompted to write the exposition of the tale by introducing the setting and main characters. After the allotted amount of time, the story is then passed to another student who is prompted to write the inciting incident or conflict and begin to detail the rising action. The paper is passed from student to student twice more until the story is resolved. When the stories are finished, the worksheet is returned to the original student who can then make edits and is responsible for producing a final draft.
With this intrinsically engaging activity, each student has the chance to tap into their creativity while applying knowledge of the 7 steps of Freytag's Pyramid. It is a great activity to introduce or reinforce the plot diagram and is IDEAL for Halloween as it is so fun for students, yet designed as a nice quiet activity, regardless of the sugar rush! Since the lesson runs itself, it is also great for a substitute or on those days when you need a quick plan to get you through the day. I trust you will find that your students will ask for this activity again and again!

Be aware that while every photograph is entirely school-appropriate, due to the scary nature of the pictures (ghosts, zombies, goblins) it is recommended for use for students in eighth grade and above. Make sure to examine all photographs prior to use in your classroom - you know what is best for your students.

Writing a biography is a fun and interesting project for your students. This provides them with the opportunity to learn about someone that interests them and share it with their peers! This packet includes information to share with your students about what a biography is, why do we write a biography, and rules to follow when writing a biography. This packet also includes an example showing the process that is used to write a biography and the steps that are taken to add onto a biography to be sure it includes a beginning, middle and end. On the last few pages, it includes a template to help students come up with possible story ideas, add onto each paragraph they will include in their biography, and a reference sheet. Space to write a rough draft as well as a final draft is included.
