Making social inferences means understanding information that is inferred or not directly stated. It involves observing a situation, then using clues with background knowledge to figure out what has happened or what is happening. The ability to make social inferences is an essential social skill. The pictures are designed for middle and high school students with images of both younger and older people to help you better differentiate for your students.

Use these 30 pictures, in a variety of ways, to help students make social inferences and develop a social understanding of what they see. DESCRIPTION

▶️ This is an comprehensive Picture Inference Lesson PACKET that includes at least eight activities where students can practice the skill of social inferencing using pictures that are relevant to this day in age. There are a total of 10 pictures that students will use to make inferences. Students have multiple opportunities to observe a social situation and combine picture clues and their background knowledge to figure out what is happening. Students can make inferences about how the people in the pictures are feeling, what they are doing, what they may be thinking, and what situation they may be in.

▶️ This lesson plan will help students learn how to read, interpret, and think about social situations. ALL pictures are age appropriate as you will not hesitate to use any picture during the learning process. Many of our students with learning and attention issues have difficulty reading body language. Failure to pick up on non-verbal signals, including body language and gestures, can make it hard for students or children to navigate all sorts of social situations. Body language and gestures convey messages, meaning, and important information beyond what is said. This resource is intended to help students "read" body language and navigate social situations successfully. It is also intended to provide students with opportunities to practice social skills by reading and responding to people’s body languages and gestures in an appropriate, positive manner.

SUGGESTIONS FOR USE:

How/When To Use Scenario Task Cards

• Role-Playing: Students can collaborate in pairs or groups to act out a variety of scenarios and demonstrate appropriate responses. Role-playing activities can also be used to show how "response" skills are used improperly and then asking the 'audience' to help reenact properly. This activity can ultimately improve confidence, communication, and assertiveness skills and further help students understand the difference between appropriate and inappropriate responses to people's body language and gestures.
• Play Writing Exercise: Students can work in groups to create skits or scenes related to body language then perform the skit for the class.
• Writing Response: Students can be given a scenario to read and then write their responses. Students can switch papers with a partner who then reads their responses and determines whether they agree/disagree with their responses/approaches to these real-life scenarios.
• Discussion: Students can discuss the Body Language / Non-verbal Communication Scenario Task Cards in groups or whole class. They can discuss things like “What would you do?”, “Why would you do that?”, and “What are some other options you could consider?”

Making Inferences is a challenging skill to master, especially for lower-level students. This resource includes two sets of Picture Inference Task Cards (80 cards in total) that are differentiated to meet the needs of both lower-level and higher-level students. The pictures in these task cards are very relevant as students "see" these everyday images almost anywhere they go!

DESCRIPTION

▶️ The first set of 40 cards, which are the color RED, have pictures that students can use to make inferences. These RED Picture Inference Task Cards include guiding questions to help lower level students make inferences.

▶️ The second set of 40 cards, which are the color GREEN, have the SAME pictures that students can use to make inferences, but without the guiding questions. Instead, this set of Picture Inference Task Cards read: “What can you infer from this picture?” and “Why do you think that?” These questions require high-level students to think for themselves as they pay close attention to picture details.

▶️ Finally, this resource includes a Picture Inference Worksheet that students can use to record their inferences and evidence. Students can record inferences and evidence for two pictures.

▶️ This is engaging practice for your especially ELL and Special Ed students and is perfect for mini-lessons, whole class instruction, cooperative learning, intervention groups, literacy centers, and small group instruction.

Suggestions on how you can use the Picture Inference Task Cards:

1. Small Group Instruction - You can have students engage in small group instruction where you provide additional support on the skill of inferencing. These Picture Inference Task Cards will support that type of instruction. You can have all students in small groups practice with the same Picture Inference Task Card number or you can distribute 1-2 task cards to each student to practice making inferences and citing evidence before reviewing.

2. Mini Lesson - You can load these Picture Inference Task Cards on the Smartboard and use them to demonstrate how to make an inference, while paying closing attention to details. They can also be used to discuss the importance of details and how they are used to encourage inferential thinking. You can even use these task cards to discuss the difference between relevant picture details and irrelevant details. Finally, you can use these inference task cards during the guided practice portion of your lesson.

3. Exit Slips - You can use these Picture Inference Task Cards as Exit Slips by distributing 1-2 task cards to each student to complete and hand in to you before they leave.

4. Partner Study - You can have students pair up and “test/question each other.” Partners not only ask each other to make valid inferences and support it with relevant picture details, but to be open to a variety of valid inferences that can be made from the same picture.

In yoga, the Yamas & Niyamas are a moral code of conduct, a guideline for how to live. Together, the Yamas & Niyamas help us to make careful decisions about how to think, speak, and behave. This foundational thinking prepares children to form healthy relationships with themselves and others.

In these products, students will learn the following English words and signs for the following parts of speech: 146 nouns, 33 pronouns, 126 adjectives, 110 verbs, 74 adverbs, 44 prepositions, 42 conjunctions, 20 interjections, and 44 contractions.

These product can be used with students who are learning English and American Sign Language. It can serve as an in class practice, review, or quiz.

In the first section of the nouns, pronouns, adjectives, verbs, adverbs, prepositions, conjunctions, interjections, and contractions products, students will learn the English word and the sign for each given word. Students will be required to write the word in their native language if a first language has previously been mastered.

In the second section, students will be provided with a dictionary for the nouns, pronouns, adjectives, verbs, adverbs, prepositions, conjunctions, interjections, and contractions products that are reviewed. Students will be provided with a picture, the word, and the sign to help students make a connection and learn the word and sign.

In the third section of the nouns, pronouns, adjectives, verbs, adverbs, prepositions, conjunctions, interjections, and contractions products, students will be required to write each given word in English. At the end of this section, students will be required to make up 10 - 20 sentences using the nouns, pronouns, adjectives, verbs, adverbs, prepositions, conjunctions, interjections, and contractions that were learned. The amount of sentences will vary per product

In the fourth section of the product, students can review what they learned based on the example sentence (if provided), picture, and sign that are included for each word. Students will then be required to make up a sentence using each word in English.

In the fifth section of the product, students can review what they learned based on the example sentence (if provided), picture, and sign that are included for each word. Students will then be required to make up a sentence using each word in their native language.

Did the old man truly have no inkling of the narrator's hatred of him? Did the police officers really "chat pleasantly" as they interrogated the increasingly agitated man? In the assignment, students must consider these questions and more, then write a short narrative through the perspective of either the old man or a police officer at the scene. The assignment is fun but more importantly, it leads to sophisticated discussion about the concept of an unreliable narrator. This is a perfect supplement for any unit on Edgar Allan Poe!

This resource includes a meticulously-detailed lesson plan using warm-up, explanation, application, and synthesis, and a one-of-a-kind game that will get your students excited about identifying the copious amount of figurative language that pervades the text. This is the perfect lesson plan for a Friday, on Halloween, or any time you need to amp up the energy in your classroom without sacrificing learning... and of course, it is Common Core aligned!
