Lesson Plan on the Sinking of the Titanic

By Bright Classroom Ideas Marketplace

This engaging lesson on the Titanic disaster combines historical analysis with language learning. Using a video and transcript, students explore key events leading to the sinking of the Titanic, analyze decision-making factors, and enhance their English skills through interactive activities. The lesson begins with a warm-up discussion, allowing students to share prior knowledge. A listening comprehension task follows, reinforcing key details from the video.

Vocabulary exercises introduce essential maritime terms, while a timeline activity helps students organize events in sequence. A true-or-false exercise encourages critical thinking by assessing their understanding of the story. Role-playing activities immerse students in historical perspectives, fostering communication and teamwork. Additionally, a creative writing task invites them to write a diary entry from a passenger’s point of view, developing narrative skills.

The lesson concludes with a reflective discussion on the tragedy’s causes and lessons learned. By integrating listening, reading, speaking, and writing skills, this lesson offers a well-rounded approach to both historical understanding and language acquisition.

The Industrial Revolution

By Bright Classroom Ideas Marketplace

The Industrial Revolution, often categorized into the First Industrial Revolution and Second Industrial Revolution, marked a transitional phase in the global economy towards more extensive, efficient, and consistent manufacturing methods, following the Second Agricultural Revolution. Initiating in Great Britain circa 1760, the Industrial Revolution extended to continental Europe and the United States by approximately 1840. This shift involved moving from manual production techniques to machinery; novel chemical manufacturing and iron production methods; a greater reliance on water and steam power; the creation of machine tools; and the emergence of the mechanized factory system. Production significantly surged, leading to an unparalleled increase in both population and the pace of population growth. The textile sector was the pioneer in adopting modern manufacturing techniques, making textiles the leading industry regarding employment, output value, and capital investment.

This handy ebook will help you teach your students about the Industrial Revolution. It contains facts, plenty of activities, the students' printable worksheet, and the relevant answer key at the end.

French digital escape room Veteran's Day Armistice - Le jour du Souvenir

By Frenchified

Note: If you purchased this game in the past, please be sure to update a new copy as the date for one of the clues has changed!

French digital escape games can be a fun way to practice the language and learn about the history and culture of the French-speaking world.  Learn about the holiday of l'Armistice/Le Jour du Souvenir in this digital game for French learners.

November 11 marks the anniversary of the Armistice ending the fighting in World War 1 and is known as Le Jour du Souvenir. This digital escape game teaches students about the events of that day as well as how we remember those who sacrificed so much. Topics include:

  • poppies
  • les bleuets de France
  • the signing of the armistice
  • the last French soldier to die in WWI
  • the fields of Verdun

What's included:

The game includes two different version: one that is entirely in English, and one that has the clues in English (since it can be difficult for non-native speakers to catch the nuances in the clues) but the sites and videos where they will find the answers are in French. Students will know that they have the correct code to unlock each lock as the form will tell them if they are correct or incorrect.  They can show you that they've solved the puzzles by taking a screenshot of the final screen.

The teacher guide includes instructions on how to reach the site, directions on how to play the game, and the answer key for the French and English games just in case you get stuck. There are two different websites where the game is hosted - one in Google sites, the other hosted on digitalescapegames.com.  Please check on your school network before you assign the game to your students, as some networks do block access to sites hosted outside of your district's network.

What teachers have said about this French digital escape game:

"My students really enjoyed this game! It was extremely challenging, but they were so satisfied when they solved the clues. It really encouraged them to read closely. I did have to give them a few hints. I only used the English version because even that took a long time for them to solve. I did feed them the clue to the date lock because in 2020, I figured it would be pretty impossible to lead them to the date from 2019. This was the first escape room activity I've done and I will be doing more!"
