2nd Grade Mental Math Lesson (by price, high to low)

Multiplication facts. Perhaps one of the most important skills for a student to learn in order to perform most math operations in the upper grades. These fact booklets provide students ample opportunity to work with their multiplication facts, both in ways that help them UNDERSTAND the facts and commit them to memory from repeated use. There are 12 booklets in this packet, one for each set of facts from one to twelve. Each booklet has 9 half sheet size pages, plus a cover. Students work with facts while filling in number bonds, doing find a number puzzles, skip counting on a hundreds board, doing repeated addition, writing their facts, working with arrays, working with fact families, and playing spinner / dice games. Simply print the booklets your students need, and either assemble yourself, or teach your students to assemble them! Easy to make, fun to do, and great practice without the feeling of "yet another worksheet". Also included is a student chart for up to 30 students to allow you to track your students progress. In this comparing money product, students will add quarters, dimes, nickels, and pennies that are worth different amounts. Students will then compare the two amounts and determine if the amounts are greater than, less than, or equal to. One example is provided. A reminder is provided for students to include the $ symbol or decimal after they have added the change together. A box is also provided on each page if students want to show their work. Students will begin by adding and comparing quarters, dimes, nickels, and pennies by themselves leading up to mixing and adding quarters, dimes, nickels, and pennies together.

Two examples are provided. One without borrowing and one that shows borrowing when adding money. Reminders are provided for students to include the $ symbol or decimal after they have added the change together. A box is also provided if students want to show their work to help them add.

Do you have students still using their fingers or counting up by ones for two-digit addition problems?

This worksheet/activity is perfect for students who need to develop strategies for two-digit addition beyond counting by ones using ten frames, bar models, and number lines. It is intentionally designed to help students see how the repeated reasoning of making 10's can be helpful for mental addition. It would be a great investigation to follow up on a series of addition number talks because the making 10's strategy is especially helpful for mental math.

For example:

"74+19, how many until the next 10? 6 so I'll borrow 6 from 19 and then add 13 to 80 to get 93."

This activity is most aligned with 2nd/3rd grade math, but I've used it to tutor students as old as 6th grade who were struggling with multiplication facts due to difficulties with mentally adding numbers without counting up by ones.

In this product, students will make change. Students will determine how much change they will get back after purchasing an item with $10 or $20. Students can use the box to show work to show how much money they will get back or to show work when determining the change they should receive back once an item is purchased.

A reminder is provided for students to include the $ symbol or decimal after they have added the change together.

A box is also provided on each page for students to show their work.
