ATTENTION GRABBERS

In the French classroom, it can be difficult to find new and engaging ways to grab the attention of our students without falling back on the old standards of 'les mains sur la tete...'

I keep a list of new and fun ways of getting students attention in my notes on my phone and try them out with my students. I love it when they get to the point that they spontaneously answer back.

French Number Lines are not always easy to find to fit the tone and feeling of your classroom! I have developed this number line with simple font and easy to read numbers and words so that your students can get started on reading their numbers together. This bright coloured French Number Line will look great in your classroom whether you are just starting out or if you need a fresh new look part-way through the year!

What to expect:

-Numerical bubble with one number in each circle

-numbers 1 to 100 (with an extra bubble with '0' in it for use if you choose)*

*Please note the font I chose does not have an 'accent aigu' so you will have to add it in your own hand.

I have added this number line to my classroom and the students started organically using it whenever a number comes up in conversation. We have a clear gateway to practice from any number and we count forward and backward depending on the whim of the day. Students love to be the one to choose our number of the day and we get counting!

Science of Reading Assessment Tool Tracking Sheet

I created a French SOR Assessment tool to cover all the sounds for students K to 3 in the French Immersion setting (Grade 4-6 Core French) for easy assessment and evaluation. Once I got started on my own testing, I realized I could use a quick look tracking sheet.

I learned how to make the boxes editable and hope it works out for you. (I did ask a few colleagues to try it out first). I am offering it FREE for now.

How to use this product:

1. Open the resource in your preferred program (Adobe, etc)
2. Fill in student names for your classroom(s)
3. Print tracking sheets out for your own students

Make a few copies of each text and insert into clear pockets to create a quick and easy reading centre; arrange a table with four copies to create a quiet reading group; use one-on-one with your students to assess reading levels, to gain insights to their decoding skills, and to inform your upcoming lesson plans. Flip Card decks are so handy for the classroom. I use them in small group work to assess and teach specific sounds, combinations of CV sounds, and to decode words together. The large format cards are great for my Grade 1 students as we can do a lot of whole class instruction and the students have so much fun coming up to the front of the class to come up with the 'really hard' CV combinations for their peers to read out loud.

Use the smaller sets for learning centres, individual work, and pair work as your students get familiar with their phonological awareness and phonemic awareness. My students happen to love 'testing' each other by flipping the cards, saying the sound, and then waiting as their 'students' write what they think is the correct letter on their whiteboards!

We love them so much as we can sneak in a little decoding and Science of Reading whenever we get a minute or two of time to fill.

Who can use this resource:

Any French educator who is wanting to practice, assess, and deepen their students understanding of sound work in French. This item is suitable for French Immersion, Core French, and French instruction at any level. Students in the Core French environment can benefit from using these sets independently for writing assignments and group activities. These end-of-year award certificates are conveniently in black and white for easy, no-prep, no expense printing. 30 eye catching awards in 2 different themes means there are 60 awards to choose. You can print on white paper, coloured paper, coloured cardstock, or have students colour them in themselves. My decision to do this is in response to so many teachers having strict colour printing budgets at their schools. I wanted to find an economical way of printing these, so teachers did not have to break the bank!

What to do:

Make copies of the awards that you would like to use, either by printing an entire set or by selecting the ones you want for printing.

Insert colour paper, white paper, or cardstock for easy printing

French Decodable Sentence Strips that align with the Science of Reading in the K-2 French classroom. Students work on their phonemic awareness, phonological awareness, decoding and encoding skills and as they master the target sound.

Make a few copies of each card and insert into clear pockets to create a quick and easy reading centre; arrange a table with four copies to create a quiet reading group; use one-on-one with your students to assess reading levels, to gain insights to their decoding skills, encoding skills, and to inform your upcoming lesson plans. Students use whiteboard markers to sound out each sound in the word, each syllable, or each word in the sentence. What a great way to build confidence! Who can use this resource:

Teachers who are just getting accustomed to using strategies from the Science of Reading can use these simple sentence strips to open up independent practice, small group evaluation, or up on a digital screen for whole group instruction and reading practice.

Make a set and send them home with students to build fluency in reading and confidence in reading strategies.

Sentences are designed to build a number of common French sounds and get more challenging as they go on.

Correction sheet is handy for use with a substitute as they can confidently assess students and command the lesson even when they are not assured of their French skills.

What grade level:

I personally use these texts with Grade 1 and Grade 2 students in French Immersion. I feel confident that students from K-3 will find these most useful and teachers can come back to the texts with any students who may be experiencing challenges in their French reading skills. Core French teachers will be sure to add the resource to their repertoire for Grades 4 to 6 as they learn to read and write at the Junior level.

Fun and engaging Back to School reading posters to foster a positive attitude in the French Immersion or Core French classroom to the world of reading.

I use these posters in my book nook in my classroom so students can explore the world of imagination contained in books.

Posters include:

Each poster has great graphics with children reading and background with a geographic theme

3 different colour schemes to choose from or you could mix and match

A terrific, no prep activity for your blossoming K-4 French writers who may be struggling to take risks with their writing skills. The students absolutely LOVE this activity and have been asking me for days when we get to do ‘le gateau et la crème glacée’. I gradually give students autonomy by giving them the freedom to talk about what they think the Food Pairs have in common.

What to do:

Make a class set of copies of one of the cutie pairs.

Students colour, write, and cut out the writing strip.

Finally, students cut and paste the ends of the writing strip to the back of each item in the pair (ie. One on toast and the other end on butter. Fold in the middle and students can show the big reveal!

Pairs included:

Each set is available in Colour format followed by Black and White

-les hamburgers et les frites

-le gateau et la crème glacée

-les croustilles et la guacamole

-le chocolat chaud et les guimauve

-les macaronis et le fromage

-1 exemplar version at the end to demonstrate how students may choose to describe their pair
