If you are looking for a way to teach your students about the history and significance of the civil rights movement in the United States, get this bundle of Civil Rights Movement Reading Comprehension passages. • The March on Washington: The passage is about the historic demonstration that brought more than 200,000 people to the nation’s capital to demand civil and economic rights for African Americans, and that featured the famous “I Have a Dream” speech by Martin Luther King Jr.
• Brown v. Board of Education: Help the students learn about the landmark Supreme Court case that declared racial segregation in public schools unconstitutional, and that paved the way for the integration of education in America.

Each passage is followed by a set of questions that test the students’ comprehension, vocabulary, and critical thinking skills. In addition, each passage comes with an answer key that provides detailed explanations for each question.

How do I set up the activity?

Just print and play! Everything you need is included in your download. You don’t need locks (you can prepare one or even use my digital lock included in this kit if you wish to), envelopes, or special equipment. You can hang or hide the puzzles or just spread them out on the kitchen table.

Do I have to print out the game materials for every kid?

Nope! You ONLY have to print out the answer sheet for each kid or group. Just one set of the actual puzzles is all you need! If you choose to use the digital version to save paper and ink, then you will only need to print the QR codes for the Mission (get the kids to scan and read this first), Hint Cards and Puzzle Tasks 1-9.

Do I have to print out the Mystery Door for the game?

Nope! I suggest that you show the picture of the door + QR code on your phone or laptop for pupils to scan and enter their 4-digit secret code. You can also use an actual lock where the kids can actually enter the 4-digit secret codes to complete the game.

I have found myself in the same spot. As I work through this curriculum I am making resources to help other teachers navigate CKLA and what they need in their classrooms to be successful. Unit 2 Early American Civilizations introduces a timeline to help students determine the time frame of ancient civilizations.

Use this timeline in your classroom to place the civilization cards for Ancient Mesopotamia, Ancient China, Ancient Egypt, Ancient Greece, and Ancient Rome to help students visualize.

What's included:

This product includes a title poster for the ELA word wall, sections for different vocabulary words (which include: parts of speech, story elements, genres, figurative language, and testing vocabulary), and some vocabulary words for each section.

I included an image on the section posters (not the Lorax Clipart) that will have a matching picture on the vocabulary words to help stay organized. Two resources perfect for students learning about Hamlet by William Shakespeare; a play script written for young performers and a close reading activity.

The play script has been rewritten to be suitable for young performers. Hamlet tells the story of a Prince whose father, the King, has just died. His father’s ghost visits him and tells him that the new King, Claudius – who has married his mother – was the killer. Hamlet wants revenge and the story follows a bloody path in which he takes revenge but loses his own life, and the life of the woman he loves – Ophelia.

The play script is a mix of modern English with some of the famous lines from the real play mixed in as well. There are 15 speaking roles, and extra characters for up to 25-30 people. Ideal for theater performances or plays, reading activities or guided reading sessions.

The second activity is a close reading passage about the play. The activity comes with an informational text, comprehension and grammar questions, an extension task, crossword and wordsearch activity.

The activities require NO PREP and have a body of text that students need to read through thoroughly; then they can use the text to find the comprehension and grammar answers. All texts then have an extension activity for those fast finishers. Answers, for teacher use, are on the final page of the document.

Time allowance for close reading activity
5 minutes - read through the text individually.
40 minutes - answer questions using the text as guidance (including extension activity)
15 minutes - Teacher and students go through the text and answers

STUDENT GUIDELINES FOR USING THIS RESOURCE

After reading each figurative language example on the board, move to the side of the room labeled “Metaphor,” “Simile,” “Hyperbole,” or “Personification.” Be prepared to defend your choices. You may disagree with your classmates’ opinions but do so respectfully. (I typically go over each example with students and discuss the impact of the words or phrases to uncover the deeper meaning. Ask questions such as, "what is being compared?" or "what can the reader visualize?")

*As an optional follow-up activity, use my No-Prep Figurative Language Short Passage Set resource to assess individual understanding, homework, or assessment!

REFLECTION:
The class can review the answers and comments as a whole group when the activity is complete. You’ll be surprised how much better they’ll get at figurative language after being exposed to some high-quality examples!
