How can you use these task cards?

⭐Have the task cards available in makerspaces, centers, tubs, busy boxes, morning baskets, as a reward, or available for early finishers to complete using ANY available materials. Students can even draw their creations instead of building them!

⭐Use one card or slide a day during morning time. Have students fill out a STEAM / STEM worksheet or slide, and discuss as a class.

⭐Use them for public speaking practice. Allow students to build and then show and tell with the class or their parents. They can discuss what they made, liked, what they would improve, and how it solved the problem on the task cards. They can practice speaking and listening skills, using loud and clear voices, and giving full attention to the speaker. Encourage students to ask questions to their classmates.

⭐Ideally the goal is to do one challenge a day, but you could certainly allow students to do more than one!

I love silly stories that bring humor and adventure to life for kids, but that also force them to use their imaginations in fun and exciting ways. This challenge task set does exactly that through the loose wacky stories where they are the main character. Silly scenarios, adventure and disaster, problem solving, and learning, are all part of the experience when completing these challenges.

Back to School - About Me Digital Menu Choice Board

This activity focuses on getting to know your students during the back to school season. This digital choice board menu is designed for students to make their own selections to report to you their qualities, favorite things and other fun information to get the year started in an engaging way. Lots of interactive elements are included!

Like a traditional choice board menu, students select three activities in a row down, across, or diagonally. All activities are included in the slides. Assign and go! Little to no prep needed.

What is included:

Menu cover page
8 activity slides with instructions and links

Slides include:

All About My Selfie: Students take a photo of themselves (or could upload a drawn self portrait) and "text" the teacher an intro.
Digital Sort Cards: Students can choose from provided words to describe themselves, or add their own.
Write It!: Students are given a "notebook" to write a letter to the teacher, complete with drag and drop "stickers"
Graphic Organizer: Students fill out a short GO about themselves.
Draw It!: Students use Google Drawing, another online drawing resource or upload an original drawing.
Digital Word Art: Students make a word cloud about themselves.
My Favorite Things: Students answer questions about their favorite things. These prompts can be edited by the teacher.

Students will respond to a "finish the scary story" prompt and then create their own using the provided template.
Students will respond to a "finish the fall story" prompt and then create their own using the provided template.
Students will design a haunted house and then pretend they are real estate agents and persuade someone to buy their house while following the provided project requirements.
Students will read the provided AVID gratitude A-Z slides and complete the gratitude alphabet page on the last slide.
Students will complete all 4 parts of the Turkey Talk: A feast of Simple, Compound, and Complex Sentences. An answer key is included for teachers.

Inquiry

Students will solve the provided Thanksgiving Logic Puzzle and use a Solution Grid to help them organize their thinking. This comes with an answer key for teachers and also makes a great TRF!
Students will go back to recent notes they took from a core content class and reread them. Then add three level 2 questions and three level 3 questions to them using Costa's House provided.
Students will choose a person from a list of historical and political figures for Hispanic Heritage Month. After conducting research, they will answer the 5 questions provided. Students will then create a 7-slide Google Slides presentation over research by following the requirements.
Students will create a 10-question quiz over notes they have taken recently in a core class. Consider focusing on a class that may have a test or quiz coming up.
Students will create a KWL using the linked chart and then read the provided article about the history of Halloween while completing their chart.

Collaboration

With a partner, students will answer the Johnny Appleseed Myth Vs. Reality Research Questions by using the provided notes and conducting research through the list of provided websites. Then students will create a podcast script.
Students will use the provided Roll a Monster Story Board and follow the directions to create a story chain within a group of 3.
Students will follow the Mnemonic Study Song Project Requirements to create a mnemonic or study song that helps them remember key concepts from recent notes in a core class to help them prepare for an upcoming test or quiz.
Students will follow the Halloween or Thanksgiving Team Building Project Requirements to create a Halloween or Thanksgiving-Themed team-building activity with a partner.
Students will individually read either article 1. Is Halloween too Commercialized? or article 2. Should Schools Have Longer Breaks in the Fall? then they will have socratic dialogue by following the directions and responding to the prompts.

Organization

Students will clean up and organize their Google Drive or another cloud storage by following the directions.
Students will organize their binder and take before and after pictures.
Students will calculate their GPA using the provided link. Then choose the class with the lowest grade and set a SMART goal on the Turkey SMART Goal page.
Students will follow the Themed Graphic Organizer Project Requirements to create a Fall, Thanksgiving, or Halloween-themed graphic organizer and fill it in with information from recent class notes.
Students will practice taking Cornell Notes over one of the provided articles.

Reading

Students read the spooky story, "The Lottery" by Shirley Jackson. Then fill in the vocabulary awareness chart and include definitions in their own words.
Students reread the spooky story, "The Lottery" by Shirley Jackson. Then answer the provided reflection questions.
Students read a book of their choice for 30 minutes and complete a digital one-pager over what they read. Make sure to follow the requirements in the template.
Students read the Summary vs. Reflection: The Forgotten Room slides, and respond to the questions using the text boxes.
Students choose their favorite fall poem from the provided website. Then follow the assignment instructions to reflect on the poem they chose.

Math Order of Operations Pixel Art Group Game

Engage your students with this fun no-prep, and self-checking order of operations group game activity. Students will practice order of operations while playing a group game using Google Sheets. I used it as a sub-plan in eighth grade and the kids loved it. As they correctly answer the questions a mystery picture will be revealed.

How to play:

Player 1 starts by solving their first problem and typing the answer in the first box of their answer section. If the answer is correct, the box will turn green. If it is incorrect, the box will remain red and Player 2 will answer their first problem. Continue taking turns until one of the players completes the mystery picture and wins the game!

Student responses won’t be visible so if a player has the opportunity to answer a question that was previously answered incorrectly, they can’t see that answer.

5th Grade Social Studies Beginning of the Year Escape Room: Back to School

Engaging Beginning of the Year Activity:

Students will be complete an engaging introduction to fifth grade Social Studies standards. They can work with a partner or a team or by themselves to answer questions focused on four social studies topics: history, civics & government, geography, and economics. These questions will help students show their previous knowledge concerning 5th grade social studies. This activity is a more engaging than a pre-test.

Teachers can choose to have students check their work after they finish each challenge in order to earn parts of a puzzle. Completed puzzles could be turned in for prizes. There is also a completed prize card provided.

Students can work at their own pace as teachers have topic labels which can be displayed throughout the classroom to show students where to find their next challenge.

When the challenge is complete, students can complete follow up questions to review the Beginning of the Year Escape Room. These could be used as written assignments or to lead class discussion.

How can you use these task cards?

Have the task cards available in makerspaces, centers, tubs, busy boxes, morning baskets, or available for early finishers to complete using ANY available materials. Students can even draw their creations instead of building them!
Use one card a day during morning time. Have students fill out a STEAM / STEM worksheet or discuss and use the Google Slides as a class.
Use them for public speaking practice. Allow students to build and then show and tell with the class or their parents. They can discuss what they made, liked, what they would improve, and how it solved the problem on the task cards. They can practice speaking and listening skills, using loud and clear voices, and giving full attention to the speaker. Encourage students to ask questions to their classmates.
Ideally the goal is to do one challenge a day, but you could certainly allow students to do more than one.

Why do I think you will love this product, and what makes my challenge set unique?

I love silly stories that bring humor and adventure to life for kids, but also that force them to use their imaginations in fun and exciting ways. This challenge task set does exactly that through the loose wacky stories where they are the main character. Silly scenarios, adventure and disaster, problem solving, and learning, are all part of the experience when building these challenges.

Most building challenge task cards are independent from each other. “Build a boat,” or “build an airplane,” are common themes among the cards. While those are fantastic, and we have done many of them ourselves, I wanted to do something different and more cohesive and engaging for kids.

The only rule is to HAVE FUN and allow those imaginations to soar!
