Less than $5 5th Grade Basic Principles Resources (by date, oldest first)

FOUR "mini" labs -or shortened activities- to reinforce or introduce concepts to students. I call these activities “mini labs” because they are simple activities that do not take the whole class period. They are also activities that are safe for use in the classroom and do not have to be done in a lab or with any specialty equipment or materials. I often use these demonstrations to lead into new content, that way as we cover material I can refer back to the things that my students have experienced first hand.

This particular lab focuses on introducing the following concepts:

Matter Takes Up Space

Two Substances Form a Mixture

Density and Volume

Change of State

(Indirectly the Properties of Matter)

Includes: teacher information, materials list, procedures, helpful tips for facilitating the activities and student handouts/lab sheets

Materials needed for these Mini Labs:

Balloons, Cups, Water, Sugar, Clay, Small Bowls, Paper Towels, Stopwatch, Chocolate Coated Candies

Students will use a chair, a board and car with interchangeable wheels (like a LEGO or K-Nex car) to examine the affects of the inclined plane. Students will run experiments, collect data, and do mathematical calculations including mechanical advantage to complete the activity.

This scientific method can be used for any grade! It helps students work through a note taking process and practice putting the scientific method in order for the steps and through examples. Students can also create their own experiment to practice putting the steps in order!

This is great for visual, auditory, and kinesthetic learners! After this, students can create and practice these steps through an experiment!

This detailed Properties of Matter Reading Comprehension Passage with Questions worksheet is a student-friendly resource that breaks down this complex science subject in a way that’s easy to understand.

Need an activity that is engaging, hands on, requires critical thinking and peer collaboration? THIS IS IT! This is a great lab that utilizes all of these and would be great for an observation! This lab will walk through the scientific method steps, research and analyze the properties of water and other liquids. Students can see how the molecules of each liquid will react with substances. Once the experiment is completed and the students have their results, they collaborate with two other groups and record their results to compare. This eliminates having to do the experiment more than once, although I do emphasize that in an experiment, results need to be able to be repeated for it to be considered proven.

This can be used as an introductory lab for water properties for older students.

As time moves on, many great Americans who have shaped the arts, sciences, sports, and history of our nation and culture get lost in time. The Great Americans Series of Biographies and Worksheets is an easy-to-read 200-word biography of just the highlights of each subject's life designed to keep young readers engaged. The questions worksheet ensures student reading comprehension and grasp of key points. The vocabulary page introduces and explains new words, phrases, and/or institutions students may not have been familiar with. The Quotes page challenges students to write what the quote means to them. The Great Americans Series is available individually or in bundles, making great bell work. An Answer Key is provided with each worksheet.

• Are you looking for a resource that will explain the chemical and physical changes of matter in a simple way?
• This resource was made to address the NGSS 2-PS1-3. This deals with reversible and irreversible changes of matter. While this is a second-grade standard, it is appropriate for any grade addressing physical and chemical changes in matter.
• There are posters defining the terms as well as examples. Picture cards showing changes are included. The students must decide what type of change is occurring. There is a suggested YouTube and a recording sheet on which students can show their understanding of the topic.
