Students will choose 1 of the 8 mandala ornaments to decorate or create their own with the blank version provided. Then they will write about their greatest gift, cut and glue that to their ornament!

• Students choose a group based on the category that best fits them.
• The teacher poses the essential question.
• Students respond to the question through note-taking.
• The teacher chooses a Socratic Seminar leader for each group.
• The leader facilitates the seminar discussion by guiding group members to a deeper and more clarified consideration of the ideas, respect for varying points of view, and adherence to and respect for the seminar process.
• Students may pose new questions when the discussion is exhausted. New questions posed must relate to students’ ideas and contributions in response to the initial essential question.
• Or leaders use the questions in the Google Slides to guide groups.
• Students write a summary by answering the EQ in their notes after the discussion.

Leap Year 2024 | Leap Day Activity | Do We Need Leap Year Socratic Seminar: In this Mini Socratic Seminar and Lesson students will mark the text of an article about Leap Year and why we have them. Then they will have a Socratic Seminar in small groups in order to discuss the essential question, “What is a leap year and is it a necessity?”

By the end of this Socratic Seminar, your students will have a deep understanding of what a Leap Year is and how to mark a text to prepare for a successful Socratic Seminar. Use this AVID Mini Socratic Seminar Lesson to increase dialogue and engagement in your classroom!

AVID Career Debate Activity - Speed Philosophical Chairs for Team Building: Use this career-themed AVID speed philosophical chairs icebreaker activity to promote debate through dialogue and public speaking in your classroom! Students will not only learn what speed philosophical chairs is but they will enjoy some exciting dialogue through 20 fun debate topics.

For example, students will choose to agree or disagree with the statement, "There should be a salary cap for celebrities like athletes and actors."

Directions:

1. A central statement will be announced to the class and you will define the two sides of the debate (Agree/Disagree).
2. Students move to the side of the room that they intend to defend.
3. An embedded timer will be set for 5 minutes, and the debate will start between the two groups.
4. Students attempt to keep contributions to less than 30 seconds each.
5. A new prompt is displayed and we start another round of quick debates.

This is a fun, engaging and creative activity which promotes self-awareness and emotional literacy. Students are encouraged to explore each of the individual scenarios and reflect on the corresponding feelings. There are a total of 15 sets of paired mittens.

This activity fosters emotional literacy by supporting students to:

- Understand emotions

- Empathise with others and their experiences

- Associate and attribute the feelings to the correct source

- Express emotions constructively

Simply cut the cards and match the mittens. Each pair of mittens includes a left-handed mitten (scenario) with the right-handed mitten (corresponding feeling). Laminate this resource and you can use this resource for years to come
