This lesson is an introductory lesson for equivalent fractions and focuses on helping students visually and conceptually understand what it means when two fractions are equivalent. Starting with the basics, this lesson is a solid foundation for first teaching equivalent fractions or reinforcing the concept.  

The lesson focuses on the use of visual models to identify fraction equivalence, and it does not include teaching the algorithm for generating equivalent fractions.  ​​Fractions with denominators: 2, 3, 4, 6, 8, & 12 are used in this lesson. It is always a good strategy to review essential skills with your students, and this is right up there with the most essential!

This fun real-life fractions exercise deals with a situation adults (especially those of us with OCD) have all faced - how to hang pictures on a wall with equal spaces between each picture. Students will face this real-life situation where they will use addition of fractions, subtraction of fractions, multiplication of fractions and division of fractions to hang these pictures equal distances apart. One version which offers the most support to students includes an example, step by step directions on how to appropriately do that skill at the top of the page and a template that students use to guide their work to help them be as independent as possible. The second version only includes the template to guide them but not the step by step directions. The third version offers only the example with the step by step directions but no template; students write out and complete each equation on their own.
