Geographical Map Labelling Challenge

Objective: To enhance students' knowledge of the world's geography by identifying and naming various geographical features using a numbered world map.

Task:

Using the numbers as references, students must identify and label the following:

- Continents: All the continents marked on the map.

- Oceans: All the major oceans indicated.

- Rivers: Major rivers that are numbered.

- Mountain Ranges: Identify the mountain ranges marked on the map.

- Bays and Gulfs: Label the bays and gulfs indicated.

- Lines of Latitude & Longitude: Identify and label the major lines of latitude (e.g., Equator, Tropics) and longitude (e.g., Prime Meridian).

- Countries: Label as many countries as possible that are numbered on the map.

Resources includes

Need a great introductory activity and a way to help students visualize landforms rather than implement the simple "write the word and definition" intro activity?

Give students the opportunity to acquire a mental picture of what each landform looks like by having them illustrate each landform based on the definition provided. This is a great way to assess their understanding of the description of each landform.

In addition, have students explore the world identifying examples of each landform and their locations by using maps, internet and other resources.

This is also a great tool for student evaluation at the end of the unit.

Need a great activity for your South America study? These 24 task cards are a great way to both introduce the unit study or evaluate what students gained during the unit in a fun and interactive way. This is a great way to get your students excited about studying a historical or current figure. Students use research and inference skills to create a resume for a historical or current figure. The example given is Mao Zedong's Resume'. Students will create an objective as to what job the character is applying. The character's education, work experience, etc. will be included. This will enhance the student's comprehension of who the character is and/or was.

Need a great world geography activity for your continent of Africa study? These 24 Africa Task Cards are a great way to introduce the unit by having students work in cooperative groups centers or individually to read the task card questions and research the answers to each task card question as if it were a scavenger hunt. These may also be used at the end of the Africa Continent unit to evaluate what students gained during the unit.
