How can you use this resource?

⭐Build all the task cards in one sitting. This typically takes 1 – 2 hours to complete the set.

⭐Have the task cards available alongside STEM and STEAM bins, makerspaces, centers, tubs, busy boxes, morning baskets, or available for early finishers to complete using any available materials. Students can even draw their creations instead of building them!

⭐Complete one challenge a day in conjunction with the different ASK, BRAINSTORM, PLAN, CREATE, TEST, and REFLECTION prompts. These can be used as class/partner discussion, or as a writing or journal prompt.

⭐Use them for public speaking practice. Allow students to build as many cards as predetermined, followed by show and tell with the class, or their families. Use the Discussion Questions to help guide this portion. Students can practice speaking and listening skills, using loud and clear voices, and giving full attention to the speaker. I love silly stories that bring humor and adventure to life for kids, but that also force them to use their imaginations in fun and exciting ways. This challenge task set does exactly that through the loose wacky stories where they are the main character! Silly scenarios, adventure and disaster, problem solving, and learning, are all part of the experience when completing these challenges.

This set of engineering and design process posters and rubric was designed with student input. There is a one page rubric that focuses on self-assessment, but that also has space for students to comment about how their team worked. There is space for teacher comments as well. There are also 4 color-coded posters to hang in your classroom so students can refer to them and self-monitor as they are working in their collaborative groups. This is aligned to the Next Generation Science Standards.

How can you use this resource?

⭐Build all the task cards in one sitting. This typically takes 1 – 2 hours to complete the set.

⭐Have the task cards available alongside STEM and STEAM bins, makerspaces, centers, tubs, busy boxes, morning baskets, or available for early finishers to complete using any available materials. Students can even draw their creations instead of building them!

⭐Use one card a day during morning time. Have students fill out a STEAM / STEM worksheet with some of the challenges that require more problem solving and creativity.

⭐Use them for public speaking practice. Allow students to build as many cards as predetermined, followed by show and tell with the class, or their families. Use the Discussion Questions to help guide this portion. Students can practice speaking and listening skills, using loud and clear voices, and giving full attention to the speaker. Encourage students to ask questions to their classmates.

Everyone dreads hearing, "My best friend is moving." Friends are a big deal to our little ones, it can be hard for them to cope with the change of their friend switching schools. To help ease the pain, I designed the "My Best Friend is Moving, BFF Memory Book." This is a fun activity that besties can do together before the big move to reflect on all the fun times they had together during their friendship. The Memory Book easy to make, you double side print the Memory Book pages and staple along the left hand side to bind the pages like a book. Each of the two students then gets a Memory Book, either Book A or Book B (labels are in the bottom right hand cover of the book). The students then work together to complete both books. Students have to pay special attention to who is being asked to answer the question. If it asks for friend A, friend A completes that page. If it asks for friend B, friend B completes the page. This means that even though each of the two books belongs to a specific student, they will both be sharing the activities inside both books. In the end, they will have two completed books filled with their memories together. Each of them can keep one book forever to look back at all the fun they had together. Included in this download: My Friend Is Moving, Memory Book A My Friend Is Moving, Memory Book B My Friend Moved Memory Book (color and black & white version of all memory books included, 6 books in total) This activity could also be used with shoulder partners as a whole class activity for fifth grade students who have the potential to be splitting up to various middle schools.
