Technology Then & Now: A Team History / Research Project

In this lesson, students use critical thinking and research skills to determine how a specific form of technology evolved. Working with a partner or small group, students start with where their chosen technology was prior to 1900 and then take it through 5 more steps of evolution to the present day. Students use the Internet for research to determine what had to happen between each step to move their technology to the next iteration. Worksheets are provided for six high interest topics, with an editable blank form (PowerPoint) if the teacher chooses to add another topic (or let students choose a different topic). The worksheets are two pages (print front and back). Resources for the teacher and students include a short list of Internet sites as a starting point for each research topic. A sample completed worksheet is also included for one topic. Topics included are:

• How We Take Photographs
• How We Communicate on the Telephone
• How We Research Information
• How We Tell Time
This lesson was designed for middle school (grades 6-8) but could be used in upper elementary as well.

History of Rock and Roll WebQuest & Presentation Project | Distance Learning

In this lesson, students learn interesting facts about the history of Rock & Roll as they complete several projects including a WebQuest (Internet Scavenger Hunt) to answer questions about the topic. A complete answer key is provided for the WebQuest for easy grading, along with resources for both teachers and students. The student questions are included in both a print version and a digital (editable) version to make it easy for students to complete the lesson digitally or on paper. Also included with this lesson is a word search puzzle that includes an answer key, perfect for early finishers or as a part of the lesson. Finally, students research their choice of a Rock & Roll musician and create a presentation about their contributions to the field of Rock & Roll using their choice of Microsoft PowerPoint or Google Slides.

7 Wonders of the World - Research ~ Engineering Design ~ Construction Project

In this lesson, students learn more about both the classic Seven Wonders of the World and the “new” Seven Wonders project as they research the history, design and engineering of the wonders. The lesson starts with a whole class Microsoft PowerPoint presentation (editable) to view the Wonders and start discussion. Next, students choose one of the classic and one of the “new” Wonders to research further and create a presentation with that information (using Microsoft PowerPoint or Google Slides). Optionally, these may be presented to the class. In the next part of the assignment, they design an “Eighth Wonder” of their own (to scale) based on what they learned, using Sketchup (a free CAD program that can be downloaded at: https://www.sketchup.com/ or used as an online tool). After completing the drawing, students build a model of their Wonder to scale using chipboard, cardboard or other materials. The building activity can be done as a team/small group activity if you prefer. Finally, students answer questions to reflect on their learning for this unit. This lesson was designed for middle school (grades 6-8) but could be used in upper elementary grades or high school as well. History of Computers - Group Research & Presentation Project

In this lesson, students learn more about the history of the computer. The lesson starts with a Microsoft PowerPoint whole class presentation that gives an overview of computer history from the 1950’s through current times. Next, students work in small groups to research history information from an assigned decade and then to create a presentation using Microsoft PowerPoint (or Google Slides) to share with the class. Students take notes during the presentations and then culminate their learning with a short quiz over the material. A study sheet is provided to cover the material from each decade that will be tested to give students an opportunity to review the information (or to assist in the case of absences or presentations that are incomplete). This lesson was designed for middle school (grades 6-8) but could be used in upper elementary grades or high school as well. Character Traits of Leaders -Research & Presentation Project | Distance Learning

In this lesson, students identify leadership traits by researching leaders throughout history. They are provided with links to resources to help them research three individuals of their choice from three different time periods in history. Lists of leaders from each time period are provided to help them choose. Then, they use that information along with graphics, pictures and backgrounds from the Internet to create a finished presentation that explains the qualities of each leader, the similarities and differences, and add their own opinions and insights to the project as they learn how to apply leadership skills in their own life.
Two versions of instructions are provided to allow the lesson to be done individually or in small groups or partners. Projects can be presented in class or included on a website for viewing.
This is an excellent creative project to add to a unit in a career class, leadership class or to support a history/social studies unit. The project was created for grades 7-8 but could easily be used with upper elementary or high school students.

Exploring Careers: Government & Public Administration | Distance Learning

This career unit gives students an introduction to the government and public administration career cluster and what a career in this field would be like. This is perfect for a career, technology, CTE or business class.
The included PowerPoint presentation can be used by the teacher for whole class instruction, or provided to the students electronically (or as a printout) for them to review individually. Students use close reading skills with a short informational passage to learn about the career field and answer questions to use critical thinking skills and demonstrate their understanding. Two different puzzles are included to learn different jobs in the career and to reinforce vocabulary skills. A technology based project (using MS Word or MS Publisher) to research information about a related topic is included to allow students to use critical thinking and creativity to further explore the career field. Additionally, a group current event project that can be completed without student computer access (by the teacher printing out the articles from the linked information) or providing access to a computer for each group to research is provided to allow students to utilize critical thinking skills and teamwork. Finally, a short reflection questionnaire gives students the opportunity to reflect and analyze their learning as they determine if this career field is of interest to them.
The project was created for grades 7-8 but could easily be used with high school students. The teacher can choose to use some or all of the provided lesson options included in this resource.

This project based learning unit is perfect for middle school (6-8) classes that focus on careers, technology, history or CTE.

Students create a timeline to show a century of inventions of their choice and make real-world connections in how those inventions influenced our history and society. Next, they choose five different inventions in different categories to explore in depth and create a PowerPoint. Finally, students research an inventor of interest and create a web page about them and their inventions, further connecting their learning to their own world and giving it an authentic audience.
My 7th graders loved sharing their research with each other and challenged each other to "think outside the box" as they gained a better understanding of technology and history. I know your students will enjoy this too!

This lesson focuses on the innovations and inventions that are borne from tragedy, specifically as it relates to 9/11. This is perfect for technology class or for use in a Social Studies or History classroom that wants to incorporate technology with a lesson for Patriot Day, September 11th.
Students work in pairs or small groups to create a presentation in Microsoft PowerPoint (or Google Slides) about some of the things that were invented because of the disaster that occurred on 9/11 after researching them. They use the information gained from their research to create a finished presentation that explains a few of the inventions inspired by that disaster and add their own opinions and insights to it.

Inventions of World War I and World War II - Research and Presentation in Canva

This unit connects learning with technology to Social Studies. This is perfect for technology class or for use in a Social Studies or History classroom that wants to incorporate technology with a lesson. No download is required to use Canva (www.canva.com ) - a free product), making it easy for teachers who are not able to download software on classroom computers to still give their students a choice in learning.
In this lesson, students are provided with a quick tutorial, as well as links to other resources to help them with their project. The tutorial is intended to help students get started with the program and then use the resources within the program to refine their creations. Students create a presentation about some of the things that were invented because of World War I or World War II after researching them. They use that information along with graphics, pictures and background (supplied in Canva) to create a finished presentation that explains the history of the inventions and adds their own opinions and insights to it.
This is an excellent creative project to add to a unit on World War I or World War II.

In this lesson, students learn about the history of Parent’s Day as they complete a WebQuest (Internet Scavenger Hunt) to answer questions about the topic. A complete answer key is provided for easy grading, along with resources for both teachers and students. Two versions of the WebQuest are included to let teachers print the questions or to provide them digitally as an interactive page in an editable Microsoft PowerPoint file. Next, they create a greeting card using Adobe Express (free, online software). A tutorial is included for the project, along with student expectations/instructions and a grading rubric. Additionally, a word search puzzle (with answer key) is included to use for early finishers or as a part of the lesson.
