What student doesn't love games – especially video games! In this lesson, students learn more about the origin and history of video games. Students choose a time period in history from a provided list, research that era, and then choose the software they will use to showcase their research. Students can choose to create a presentation, a brochure, or a video using Web 2.0 tools such as Prezi, Adobe Spark, eMaze, Canva, etc. (free, no download needed) or by using Microsoft Office or Google Apps. A full list of software/technology options is listed in the student lesson instructions and includes links to tutorials. For classrooms with limited technology, this lesson can be completed with students working in pairs or small groups. The completed presentations can be shared with the rest of the class if the teacher chooses.

This is a great activity for a social studies or history class, career exploration class, Principles of Arts, A/V Technology & Communications class, or any technology class. This lesson was designed for middle school (grades 6-8) but could be used in high school as well.

In this lesson, students use critical thinking and research skills to determine how a specific form of technology evolved. Working with a partner or small group, students start with where their chosen technology was prior to 1900 and then take it through 5 more steps of evolution to the present day. Students use the Internet for research to determine what had to happen between each step to move their technology to the next iteration. Worksheets are provided for six high interest topics, with an editable blank form (PowerPoint) if the teacher chooses to add another topic (or let students choose a different topic). The worksheets are two pages (print front and back). Resources for the teacher and students include a short list of Internet sites as a starting point for each research topic. A sample completed worksheet is also included for one topic. Topics included are:

This project lets students learn about the engineering and design of hotels as they research and design one with their team. After introducing the lesson with a short video (link included in resources), students complete a math project about hotel design that focuses on perimeter, area, square footage, measurement and scale skills (formulas are included). Next, they work with their team to research information about the design and engineering involved in hotel construction and plan the design, materials and budget for the hotel they will design. Then, they work individually to create their own hotel to scale in Sketchup (a free CAD software program, download available at: https://www.sketchup.com/download ) and after completion, determine which of the team’s designs they will actually construct. Finally, they build a model of their hotel using recycled materials, following the Engineering Design Process with their team. After completing their hotel, students present their project to the class and explain their design choices. Finally, students reflect on and summarize their learning with short answers to questions about the experience and what they learned.

This lesson was created for 7th and 8th grade, but could also be used successfully in upper elementary grades or high school as well.

Introduction to Adobe Photoshop gives students a step-by-step tutorial to learn the beginning commands of Adobe Photoshop. After following the instruction (screen shots are included), students combine their “before” and “after” pictures into a simple PowerPoint (or Google Slides) to make grading easy. Finally, students complete a short creative activity to demonstrate their understanding of their learning. In this lesson, students learn more about the history of the computer. In this lesson, students learn more about both the classic Seven Wonders of the World and the “new” Seven Wonders project as they research the history, design and engineering of the wonders. The lesson starts with a whole class Microsoft PowerPoint presentation (editable) to view the Wonders and start discussion. Next, students choose one of the classic and one of the “new” Wonders to research further and create a presentation with that information (using Microsoft PowerPoint or Google Slides). Optionally, these may be presented to the class. In the next part of the assignment, they design an “Eighth Wonder” of their own (to scale) based on what they learned, using Sketchup (a free CAD program that can be downloaded at: https://www.sketchup.com/ or used as an online tool). After completing the drawing, students build a model of their Wonder to scale using chipboard, cardboard or other materials. The building activity can be done as a team/small group activity if you prefer. Finally, students answer questions to reflect on their learning for this unit. Utilizing Microsoft Word and Excel, students “purchase” a home of choice from a list and then determine the improvements they want to make to it, all while staying within their budget. Then, they design the home, using Web 2.0 tools (www.floorplanner.com or www.homestyler.com ) or Sketchup (a free download available at: http://www.sketchup.com/download ). Finally, students use Microsoft Word to prepare a one-page sale flyer for their renovated home. Note: This lesson is intended for beginning Excel users and was created using Microsoft Excel 2016. It is easily adaptable for different versions.

This career unit gives students an introduction to the Information Technology career cluster and what a career in this field would be like. This is perfect for a career, technology, CTE or business class.

The included PowerPoint presentation can be used by the teacher for whole class instruction, or provided to the students electronically (or as a printout) for them to review individually. Students use close reading skills with a short informational passage to learn about the career field and answer questions to use critical thinking skills and demonstrate their understanding. Two different puzzles are included to learn different jobs in the career and to reinforce vocabulary skills. An individual project to create a web site using Weebly (www.weebly.com) offers students an opportunity for a real-life look into this career. A group project to learn more about cybersecurity is provided to allow students to utilize critical thinking skills and teamwork. Finally, a short reflection questionnaire gives students the opportunity to reflect and analyze their learning as they determine if this career field is of interest to them.

The project was created for grades 7-8 but could easily be used with high school students. The teacher can choose to use some or all of the provided lesson options included in this resource.

No download is required to use the product, making it easy for teachers who are not able to download software on classroom computers to still give their students a choice in learning.

This unit gives students a new way to plan goals and create a visual representation of them as they create a vision board using the free Web 2.0 tool Canva (www.canva.com), Microsoft PowerPoint or Google Slides. Canva does not require download, making it easy for teachers who are not able to download software on classroom computers to still give their students a choice in learning. Options for using Microsoft PowerPoint or Google Slides are also included for use if the teacher prefers.

In these lessons, students are provided with a quick tutorial for Canva, as well as links to other resources to help them with their designs. The tutorial is intended to help students get started with the program and then use the resources within the program to refine their creations. Links are included to tutorials for Microsoft PowerPoint and Google Slides.

Students start this unit by learning about vision boards and looking at some examples before planning their own. Next, they search for non-copyrighted pictures, quotes and words to convey their goals and create a vision board using Canva (PowerPoint or Slides). Teacher and student resources are provided for the lesson, along with full instructions and project expectation, including a grading rubric. Three versions of the assignment are included: One that includes all software choices, one that includes only Canva, and one that includes only the Microsoft PowerPoint and Google Slides options. A sample vision board is also included, as well as links to other examples. Links for tutorials are provided for all suggested software choices in the student resources and a Quick Start Tutorial Guide is included for Canva. All student resources are fully editable, so that it can be easily modified for any classroom.

If you prefer, this lesson can be done without access to student computers, using poster board and pictures cut from magazines (see full supply list for this option below). A version of those instructions is also included.

Perfect for the beginning of the school year or the New Year to set goals, this lesson can be used in technology, AVID, leadership or similar classes. This lesson was designed for middle school (grades 6-8) but could be used in any secondary classroom.
