Technology Then & Now: A Team History / Research Project

In this lesson, students use critical thinking and research skills to determine how a specific form of technology evolved. Working with a partner or small group, students start with where their chosen technology was prior to 1900 and then take it through 5 more steps of evolution to the present day. Students use the Internet for research to determine what had to happen between each step to move their technology to the next iteration. Worksheets are provided for six high interest topics, with an editable blank form (PowerPoint) if the teacher chooses to add another topic (or let students choose a different topic). The worksheets are two pages (print front and back). Resources for the teacher and students include a short list of Internet sites as a starting point for each research topic. A sample completed worksheet is also included for one topic. Topics included are:

Design and Build a Hotel - STEM, Engineering & Math Group Project

This project lets students learn about the engineering and design of hotels as they research and design one with their team. After introducing the lesson with a short video (link included in resources), students complete a math project about hotel design that focuses on perimeter, area, square footage, measurement and scale skills (formulas are included). Next, they work with their team to research information about the design and engineering involved in hotel construction and plan the design, materials and budget for the hotel they will design. Then, they work individually to create their own hotel to scale in Sketchup (a free CAD software program, download available at: https://www.sketchup.com/download ) and after completion, determine which of the team’s designs they will actually construct. Finally, they build a model of their hotel using recycled materials, following the Engineering Design Process with their team. After completing their hotel, students present their project to the class and explain their design choices. Finally, students reflect on and summarize their learning with short answers to questions about the experience and what they learned.

This lesson was created for 7th and 8th grade, but could also be used successfully in upper elementary grades or high school as well.

7 Wonders of the World - Research ~ Engineering Design ~ Construction Project

In this lesson, students learn more about both the classic Seven Wonders of the World and the “new” Seven Wonders project as they research the history, design and engineering of the wonders. The lesson starts with a whole class Microsoft PowerPoint presentation (editable) to view the Wonders and start discussion. Next, students choose one of the classic and one of the “new” Wonders to research further and create a presentation with that information (using Microsoft PowerPoint or Google Slides). Optionally, these may be presented to the class. In the next part of the assignment, they design an “Eighth Wonder” of their own (to scale) based on what they learned, using Sketchup (a free CAD program that can be downloaded at: https://www.sketchup.com/ or used as an online tool). After completing the drawing, students build a model of their Wonder to scale using chipboard, cardboard or other materials. The building activity can be done as a team/small group activity if you prefer. Finally, students answer questions to reflect on their learning for this unit. This career unit gives students an introduction to the Information Technology career cluster and what a career in this field would be like. This is perfect for a career, technology, CTE or business class.

Students use close reading skills with a short informational passage to learn about the career field and answer questions to use critical thinking skills and demonstrate their understanding. This lesson lets students research some of the most popular apps and learn more about the software engineers who created them, and then create an app of their own. In this lesson, students learn more about the history of graphic design. Students choose a time period in history from a provided list, research that era, and then choose the software they will use to showcase their research. Students can choose to create a presentation, a brochure, or a video using Web 2.0 tools such as Prezi, Adobe Spark, eMaze, Canva, etc. (free, no download needed) or by using Microsoft Office or Google Apps. A full list of software/technology options is listed in the student lesson instructions and includes links to tutorials. For classrooms with limited technology, this lesson can be completed with students working in pairs or small groups. The completed presentations can be shared with the rest of the class if the teacher chooses.

In this lesson, students identify leadership traits by researching leaders throughout history. They are provided with links to resources to help them research three individuals of their choice from three different time periods in history. Lists of leaders from each time period are provided to help them choose. Then, they use that information along with graphics, pictures and backgrounds from the Internet to create a finished presentation that explains the qualities of each leader, the similarities and differences, and add their own opinions and insights to the project as they learn how to apply leadership skills in their own life.

Two versions of instructions are provided to allow the lesson to be done individually or in small groups or partners. Projects can be presented in class or included on a website for viewing.

History of Jazz WebQuest and Presentation Project | Distance Learning

In this lesson, students learn interesting facts about the history of jazz as they complete several projects including a WebQuest (Internet Scavenger Hunt) to answer questions about the topic.    A complete answer key is provided for the WebQuest for easy grading, along with resources for both teachers and students.  The student questions are included in both a print version and a digital (editable) version to make it easy for students to complete the lesson digitally or on paper.  Also included with this lesson is a word search puzzle that includes an answer key, perfect for early finishers or as a part of the lesson.  Finally, students research their choice of a jazz musician and create a presentation about their contributions to the field of jazz using their choice of Microsoft PowerPoint or Google Slides.
