6th Grade Career and Technical Education Projects (by date, latest first)

Explain what career options are available to your based on your interests and abilities.

Welcome to Engineering and Technology! Before we begin to see how engineering and technology affect our lives on a daily basis, let’s look at what is encompassed under the CTAE (Career, Technical and Agricultural Education) umbrella. We are going to do this by looking at a CTAE Pathway at the college level vs. a Math/Science Pathway at the college level. We are going to look at Kennesaw State University’s programs in several of these categories. Since KSU’s merger with Southern Polytechnic College of Engineering and Technology, this is a great place to look at several college options in each of these pathways.

Introduction/description to CTAE

Are you looking for a different approach to using the Scientific Method/ Engineering Design Process? “Can They Do That?” is a "TV-show type" series that presents things made in the movies/television and challenges the students to prove or disprove "Can They Do That?" This first episode looks at a hot air balloon contraption built out of hair dryers and trash bags on the A-Team.

Students start the lesson by watching a clip from a TV show (included in PowerPoint). They are presented with a “problem” by the TV Show Host and then they work through the EDP.

This lesson includes the Video Introduction embedded in a PowerPoint with a Student Handout that guides students research, prototype and solution.

Here's a quick, easy project for your students IF YOU HAVE SOLIDWORKS software in your classroom. These directions take you step by step creating a block, adding text, and cutting the image out to prepare for 3D print.

**If you don't have SOLIDWORKS, these may not work for you.**

Do you want to raise awareness for those in wheelchairs? How do you do that in an engineering class? You find instances where ADA is not being followed and you have your students design a new entry way in CAD! That's what this lesson is all about!! Students are made aware of a local building that does not meet ADA requirements and the owner is being sued. Your students work for an engineering firm. They must, first, research the law. Then they design a new entry way that meets ADA requirements.

Lesson Overview

These projects have students using real-world math skills to learn to perform the calculations that are done in various careers within the seventeen career clusters. They will use math skills to learn how to compute measurements, quantities, profit, etc. to solve problems commonly found in that career field.

Are your students always asking "When will be ever USE this??" This short activity shows students a real-world use for the math skills they learn every day.

These lessons were created for 7th and 8th grade but could also be used successfully in upper elementary grades. Fully editable files are included for all lessons.

The bundle includes eighteen (18) different lessons, all of which are also available separately. They are all fully editable and include the student handout, an answer key, and a formula “cheat sheet” for students to assist with problem solving.

In this lesson, students learn fun facts about Paul Cezanne and his art as they complete a WebQuest (Internet Scavenger Hunt) to answer questions about the topic. Then, they use that knowledge to create an art project of their own, using Cezanne's style, in Microsoft Paint, 3D Paint, or one of these free Web 2.0 tools: SketchPad (https://sketch.io/sketchpad/) or SumoPaint (https://www.sumopaint.com/home/#app) that do not require download. A complete answer key is provided for the WebQuest for easy grading, along with resources for both teachers and students. The student questions are included in both a print version and a digital (editable) version to make it easy for students to complete the lesson digitally or on paper. Also included are tutorial links to assist students with the software for the art project.

In this lesson, students learn more about famous structures and landmarks in Dallas and the individuals who created them. Students choose the landmarks they will research and then choose the software they will use to showcase their research. Students can choose to create a presentation, a brochure, or a newspaper using Web 2.0 tools (free, no download needed) or by using Microsoft Office or Google Apps. For classrooms with limited technology, this lesson can be completed with students working in pairs or small groups. The completed presentations can be shared with the rest of the class if the teacher chooses.

This is a great activity for a social studies or history class, or for a technology class. This lesson was designed for middle school (grades 6-8) but could be used in upper elementary grades or high school as well.

This lesson is great for distance learning/remote learning. You can upload it to your school's learning management system (Google Classroom, Edmodo, Canvas, etc.) or share with students via Google Drive.

This unit helps students explore and understand the “soft” skills needed for success in the workplace. This is perfect for a career or technology class or for use in a social skills classroom. All files provided are fully editable, allowing teachers to make modifications for differentiation or personalization if they choose.

Several high interest topics are included for students to research, discuss and form opinions about. A fully editable PowerPoint presentation is provided as an introduction for each topic, that can be presented to the class or distributed in print or digitally so students can review at their own pace. Critical thinking questions about each topic are provided for students to complete individually or with a group and an answer key is provided where appropriate. Additionally, group discussion cards take students to the next level in their learning as they solve real-world scenarios in the workplace, using the skills they have learned.
