Less than $5 6th Grade Math Centers (by price, high to low)

This assessment can be utilized to identify a baseline for individuals around their knowledge of money. This assessment explores an individual’s ability to identify coins and notes, explores value, the ability to count money and budget. This assessment is divided into seven specific areas and each area can be used in isolation to each other, or together to form a comprehensive assessment.

These areas include:

1. Basic Numeracy Skills

2.Written amounts

3.Colour recognition and value

4.Coin and note recognition

5.Budgeting assessment

6.Monetary values

7.Budgeting

It is ideal that all sections are completed to give a general picture of the level of skills the Student currently has. The assessor needs to complete the scores in each section as well as placing a comment next to the score. It is important that the assessor provides a comment so that all relevant material can be extracted, and the most appropriate program be designed for each Student.

SCORING - the assessor is to place a number score into the column next to the question. The scores go from 1 - 3 depending on the skill of the Student.

1. Completed independently - i.e., no assistance at all from the assessor, (no verbal or gestural prompts).

2. Completed with assistance - i.e., assessor may need to verbally prompt or point to correct response.

3. Can not do - even with prompts the Student is unable to complete correct response.

From the baseline a money recognition / budget program can be developed to meet the individual needs of each Student.

EQUIPMENT NEEDED - The assessor will need to have the following equipment available prior to commencing the assessment:

• Money in the form of coins and notes up to the value of $100.00. Should you not have the physical money, this resource includes the options to print a paper copy of the coins/notes which will suffice.

• A printed copy of this assessment and associated worksheets.

NOTE: This assessment is designed for Australian audiences as it uses Australian money.

A variety of numbers two hundred one through one thousand are included. I print the cards on various colors of cardstock. This makes it easy to sort the cards for increased level of difficulty. I also like to sew a cloth bag for the game container. The cloth bag is a quiet container. Teacher Directions: ~Print and laminate cards. The cards are organized for ease of levels of play based on the number words chosen to practice. Players: 3-4 Materials: game cards, container that is not see through (I like to use a cloth bag) Game Directions: ~Place all cards in container. ~Students take turns selecting a card from the container. Read the word. If the student is correct they keep the card. If not the card is put back in the container and the next player takes their turn. If a student picks a BAM card the student must put all their cards back into the container and play continues to the next player. This is a math mystery that is aligned to the 4th grade Engage NY and Eureka math module 6 on decimals. This resource would also be a great for review of area for 4th grade students prior to the state test. This resource includes a scenario, a suspect list, 5 clues that students will solve to find the culprit and answers keys to all pages. Decimal skills practiced in this are: adding & subtracting decimals, ordering decimals from least to greatest, decimal notation, adding money, comparing decimals.

This resource would be great to use as a review before the end of module assessment, before state tests, on the days leading up to a school break so new materials isn't being introduced yet, as a math lesson to leave for a substitute teacher, use individual clues as daily center work over the course of a week, etc. This resource also has an end of year theme with the prospect of moving onto the next grade being on the line occurring in the storyline and suspect list.

My students absolutely love doing these! They especially love predicting who the culprit is prior to beginning the clues to see if they could guess it correctly!
