In their first year of middle school, 6th graders embark on a new phase in their education, facing fresh challenges and changes. In many ways, 6th grade marks an important transition for students, as they apply the skills they have learned before to engage in more complex and self-guided learning in deeper and more demanding ways.

While collaboration continues to be an important element of the curriculum, students often need to produce more detailed independent assignments, especially in writing. This requires improved independence and organizational skills, and it will probably necessitate some adjustment and practice at the beginning of the school year.

The main goal of the 6th grade reading curriculum is to have students interact with increasingly difficult texts over the year, preparing them for high school, advanced studies, and future professions. Students examine a variety of texts and different genres, including fiction, drama, poetry, and non-fiction.

Flat Stanley: Stanley's Christmas Adventure written by Jeff Brown is a cute holiday book that all of my students enjoyed. Students can complete this packet of reading comprehension questions, finding definitions of challenging words, making up sentences using those challenging words, and paragraph writing independently or with support.

As students are learning the 40 pre-primer sight words in this product, they will be provided with each word, an example of the word used in a sentence (along with some visuals to help them understand unfamiliar vocabulary words), and the opportunity to make up a sentence themselves using the word. I find that with my students who are Deaf/hard of hearing/ELL, when they make up sentences using the newly learned sight word, it helps them to remember how to spell the word, the meaning, and how it is used. My students love booklets of any kind that they can refer back to. Once they have come up with their sentences, they can include pictures that they print and cut out, draw pictures freehand, or find pictures in a magazine that they can add to each page of the pre-primer sight word booklet that matches each sentence they come up with. This gives students the opportunity to connect what they are learning about in the classroom with their own personal interests. This booklet is perfect for students that are on grade level as well as students who require instructional information to be adapted.

Students can answer these questions as the book is read to them, as they read the book independently or they can use the text for lookbacks once the book is finished.

Students will read or follow along as the passage about the emperor penguin is read. Students will then answer comprehension questions as they read or after they have finished reading. Students will then see a diagram of an emperor penguin at the end of the product. Students will then label the diagram using a key.

Students will read or follow along as the passage about Groundhogs Day is read. Students will then answer comprehension questions as they read or after they have finished reading. There are short answer and multiple choice comprehension questions included in this product. Vocabulary words that students may be unfamiliar with and their meanings are presented in this product that include - hibernate, predator, groundhog, and burrow. Students will then see a diagram of a groundhog at the end of the product and will be required to label the diagram using a key. There are also facts about groundhogs included in this product. Students will be required to share two things that they learned about groundhogs that they did not know before.

The 2007 movie, Nancy Drew makes a connection with both the older and modern Nancy Drew novels. Students can see Nancy Drew in action when watching the movie, after reading the book series. The movie is similar to the book series in that it discusses problem solving skills, following rules, working together, and being a good friend. The comprehension questions in this product relate with the movie as well as students own experiences. Students can also write sentences uses unknown vocabulary words in sentences. Students can answer these comprehension questions as they watch the movie or after they have finished the movie.
