*******************************
Anticipation guides are excellent tools that can be used before reading to activate students' prior knowledge and build curiosity about a new topic and/or to share ideas about key concepts. Students respond to several statements that challenge or support their preconceived ideas about key concepts as well as their peers’ ideas. The Anticipation Guides can help structure meaningful conversations that reviews what students already know and engages them in critical thinking about the topic they will be exploring. The statements in the Anticipation Guides can spark some great discussions among students!! This Anticipation Guide and Self-Assessment focuses on Growth Mindset.
*******************************
You can use an Anticipation Guide:
✅ Before/after introducing new material to tap into prior knowledge
✅ Before/after watching a film clip to gauge a reaction
✅ Before/after reading a short text to begin a discussion
✅ Before/After discussing a topic
*******************************
ANTICIPATION GUIDES
There is ONE Anticipation Guide that comes in two different variations:
▶️ Variation #1:
⭐ Part 1: The first section of the Anticipation Guide features a list of statements alongside columns labeled "AGREE" and "DISAGREE." Students are tasked with reading each statement and marking either "AGREE" or "DISAGREE" based on their perspective.
⭐ Part 2: The second section of the Anticipation Guide prompts students to choose a statement from the list above and delve into its significance to them. They may reflect on how the statement connects to their own lives, share a personal experience related to it, or elaborate on their thoughts concerning its importance in greater detail.
▶️ Variation #2: This Anticipation Guide worksheet format includes a list of statements accompanied by columns for "AGREE," "DISAGREE," and "COMMENTS." Students are instructed to read each statement and mark either "AGREE" or "DISAGREE." They are then encouraged to elaborate on their thoughts or ideas regarding each statement in the designated "COMMENTS" column.
*******************************
SELF-ASSESSMENT
There is ONE Growth Mindset Self-Assessment included in this resource. Students will assess and recognize fixed mindset elements in themselves and identify areas in which they can work to develop a growth mindset by scoring the statements using the following scale: 2 for “Always,” 1 for “Sometimes,” and 0 for “Never.” They can use this assessment tool to help them identify areas where they can strengthen their growth mindset and improve their approach to challenges and learning.
These assessment statements can also serve as a means to explore students' competencies and viewpoints regarding the topic!
*******************************
This resource is also included in Google Slides! Text boxes have already been created to make it easier for you and your students! Each slide includes two instruction solution tabs for when students accidentally delete text boxes and when they want to zoom in (to enlarge worksheets). Math Order of Operations Pixel Art Group Game
By Matemaths
Engage your students with this fun no-prep, and self-checking order of operations group game activity. Students will practice order of operations while playing a group game using Google Sheets. I used it as a sub-plan in eighth grade and the kids loved it. As they correctly answer the questions a mystery picture will be revealed.
How to play:
Player 1 starts by solving their first problem and typing the answer in the first box of their answer section. If the answer is correct, the box will turn green. If it is incorrect, the box will remain red and Player 2 will answer their first problem. Continue taking turns until one of the players completes the mystery picture and wins the game!
Student responses won’t be visible so if a player has the opportunity to answer a question that was previously answered incorrectly, they can’t see that answer.
It’s a great way to introduce additional problems for
· Back to School test review and prep
· Additional materials for remediation
· Lesson plan activity for substitute teachers
Three versions are included, ten questions each version:
- easy: no parentheses and no exponents;
- intermediate: with parentheses and exponents;
- challenging: with parentheses and exponents.
Solutions are included for your convenience.
Suitable for IB MYP Middle Years Programme.
