Save lots of money while shopping using coupons. This colorful, cheerful binder organizes your coupons and makes it easier for you to find just the right coupon you are looking for while out shopping.Teach your students or children in your household the value of saving money by saving coupons. Create your own coupon binder by using baseball card holders that you can find at many dollar stores or office supply stores. You can either use a two inch or three inch binder to set it up and place all your dividers in. There are two coupon sorting sheets available. Rather than flipping through the pages in your binder to insert coupons which can take a lot of time, you can use the coupon sorting mats. Once your coupons are all sorted then you can place them in your binder. Children of all ages can help with sorting the coupons. Have your students see themselves through the lens of an investigator, exploring a complex and important inquiry…. ‘What factors caused the Great Depression’? Students, or your class investigators, will examine a variety of context clues and information that will help them solve this question. Students will identify the causal clues along with its effects, and then create a ‘LOOP’ (web) diagram that will serve to demonstrate their understandings of how these underlying causes interconnect with one another. This unit will prompt your students to become active learners in their pursuit of solving the mystery.

*This unit will have students explore dynamics of the 1920's, Great Depression, and the New Deal.

The 1920's, The Great Depression, The New Deal

This lesson involves having students examine the impacts of the Industrial Era in the United States with a specific focus on child labor. It is recommended that students will have explored, to some degree, the Industrial era prior to this lesson. This resource will prompt students to analyze social activist Lewis Hines' photographs that depict the various jobs and working conditions that children experienced. The Slide Presentation is interactive, problem posing, and vicariously draws the students into the lives of the children of the Industrial era.

Optional Extension Activity: Students compare and contrast the child labor of the Industrial era with the child labor that exists today. A 22 minute documentary film titled 'Zoned for Slavery: The Child Behind the Label' supplements this lesson.

In order to understand this, students need to take a deep look into the history of the struggle Ukraine has had with its more powerful neighbors in its attempts to become independent. Finally, in 1991, Ukraine was free of domination and created its own government system, and claimed independence for the first time in history. In an attempt to reach independence, there has been a great amount of bloodshed over the centuries.

Poaching is an illegal act of hunting, capturing, or killing animals and plants without permission from the authorities and is an environmental issue and selling ivory tusks, fur, and other resources for profit. Throughout the world today, animals, plants, and our environment overall are facing poaching issues. What does this look like and what does it mean for our species and their future? What does it mean for us? Take a look at various endangered animals and plants that are facing poaching through an introductory PowerPoint.

Animals that are typically poached, such as rhinoceroses, elephants, tigers, and bears sell at very high prices for profit.

Plants that are endangered and in danger of being poached for profit are wild ginger and cycad plants in South Africa to ginseng and venus fly traps are all under great threat at the hands of poachers.

Explore the poaching issues throughout the world and explore the underground trade system faced by Vietnam, China, Hong Kong, South Africa, Kenya, Mozambique, Namibia, Botswana, Zimbabwe and India as well as many other nations, finding ways to create protection and environmental safety.

OBJECTIVES

• Students will become familiar with the types of poaching and trafficking throughout the world through an Introductory PowerPoint Presentation (Plants and animals)
• Students understand the dangers of poaching and trafficking to animals and the environment.
• Students will research different types of poaching around the world and will determine a working solution to the poaching problem.
• Students will write a proposal to an organization that protects endangered species/agriculture to persuade them to help fund their solution/plan to the poaching issue.

SUPPLIES NEEDED:

· Introduction PowerPoint: The Killing Fields

· Internet, magazines, and books on poaching.

· Articles: The Killing Fields - Rhino or The Killing Fields – Pangolin (Included)

· The Killing Fields Activity Research Sheet (Included)

· Presentation Rubric (Included)

PROCEDURE:

Students will work in cooperative groups of 2-3 (or as an individual assignment, if the instructor wishes) to read one or both of the articles The Killing Fields - Rhino or The Killing Fields – Pangolin (Included). Allow students to discuss the articles as a class and ask questions. Students will begin their group activity.

Working in their teams and using the Student Activity Sheet: The Killing Fields (included), they will research species or agriculture that are being poached and trafficked around the world. Provide access to the Internet, articles, or books on poaching as sources of research. To save time, the instructor may wish to assign students a home assignment to students requiring them to bring in an article regarding poaching to save time.

CLOSURE:

Students will present their findings and proposals and will be graded via the grading rubric. (Included)

POPULATION EXPLOSION!

Need a fun & engaging way to teach the causes & effects of population incline and decline, total birth rate and death rate, total population, Demographic Transition Model (DTM) Stages of Population Total Chart. This lesson can be modified to only 60 minutes if you are limited on time by omitting some of the activities, and it will still be effective. If you want to send home some of the activities such as the Cootie Catcher you can do that as well. This lesson gives you various options for activities. All can be included or you can choose which ones to implement. I always try to make learning fun and engaging while raising the bar to get students thinking through problem-solving.

OBJECTIVE:

o The learner will understand the differences between birth rate and death rate

o The learner will be able to explain the cause & effect of overpopulation, high/low birth rate, and high/low death rate.

o The learner will be able to identify in what stage on the Demographic Transition Model (DMT) a county lies and why.

o The learner will be able to demonstrate an understanding of what problems and opportunities may occur with an incline and a decline in population.

MATERIALS:

• Student Reading Comprehension Activity (3 Pages), a timer, a die (Suggested to laminate this for durability and reuse.
• Cootie Catcher Comprehension and Review (1 Per Student)
• Student Reading Comprehension Activity: Demographic Transition Model (1 page), Colored Pencils,
• Group Research Activity (1 per group), internet access
• Student Review Game, Cut Out & Laminate Pieces and Place in a Zip Lock Bag (1 Set Per Group)
• 3 Canning Jars and Rice, or something small to represent people.
• Laminate the Population Symbol Card, One Per Group.
• Document cameras, dedicated computer projection systems ar interactive whiteboards for each student to display their “Take a Look at Population” Group Research Activity. They will display for the class to see.

PREPARATION:

You may include all or omit a few activities based on the time available for this lesson. You may also split the reading assignment & activities into two class periods, if necessary.

• Laminate the Reading Comprehension Activity (3 pages). 1 Set Per Group.
• Laminate the Game Cards and place them in Ziplock bags, 1 Set Per Group
• Print Cootie Catchers, One Per Student
• Print Demographic Transition Model, One Per Group
• Take a Look at Population, One Per Group
• Using the Jars: Label Each Jar (1) the United States or Your Country (2) World (3) China. Fill the “World” jar to the very top representing 100% of the world’s population and place the lid on it. Fill the “United States” jar

Your students will love this lesson, from 6th grade to 12th grade. The PowerPoint is included in the Zip File.

In 1980, China enforced the One-Child Policy Act to due to overpopulation issues as a result of Mao Zedong's policies, as he competed with Russia for power. Once he dies in 1979, China had to look at the population issues as there was a shortage of housing and resources— and they were continuing to multiply. Something had to be done, so the government enforce Martial Law and only allowed families to have one child.

However, now the One-Child Policy has created a downward shift in population, and as the older generation dies, the population is declining at significant rates. In 2016, to encourage population growth, China's government put in to play the Two-Child Policy pleading with its citizens, "Please have a second child". When that wasn't working, in 2021, they pass a Three-Child Policy.

This lesson examines and compares China's Child Policy Acts throughout the years and their effectiveness, also giving students the opportunity to provide their opinion of various scenarios.

OBJECTIVES:

• Understand the guidelines of the One-Child Policy Act, Two-Child Policy
  Act, and Three-Child Policy Act
• Examine the cause and effect of China's child policy acts
• Determine the effectiveness of each of China's child policy acts
• Understand Population Density

SUPPLIES NEEDED:

• Technology to display a video from the introductory list
• Reading Activity: One-Child Policy Act (1980), Two-Child Policy Act (2016), Three-Child Policy Act (2021)
• KWL Reading Activity & Share (Included)
• Painters Tape
• Laminated Agree and Disagree Sign (Tape to the wall)

GROUP READING ACTIVITY: (15-20 MINUTES)
Divide students into groups/teams of three. Give each team member an article to read:

Geography summer school and camps don't give us enough time to cover all the concepts and topics that need to be covered. Squeezing the curriculum

8 months is difficult; covering it over 6-8 weeks is impossible. There is so much information and so little time. This leaves us as educators with the question of what are the important aspects to cover. Having taught middle school level and high school level geography for 11 years, I have pulled out what I feel is a must!

A working knowledge of geography concepts is helpful in teaching this material. If you do not understand geography or if you have never taught geography before, no problem! Simply, read through the student material so you can help your students understand and complete the included activities.
