Working on aural theory with your kids? With "Rhythm Mixup" students shuffle up notecards with quarter notes, 2-beamed eighth notes, half notes, and quarter rests to reflect the musical example being played! We start off the first lesson (level 1) with a brief overview of rhythm from Quaver's Marvelous World of Music, and then head right into rhythm mixup. Students will lay out their notation cards (you can either print these out or have the students draw them on a whiteboard, etc), and then a musical example will be played. Students will have to put the notes in the order that they hear the music example -- hence, the "mixup"! Level 2, goes into quarter rests and the students will have to place it appropriately (hint: it's never at the beginning or end of the phrase!) :) Students identify rhythms upon hearing them and use their aural skills to dictate where each rhythm is placed. Make sure to play these several times, especially for the younger ones so they can check their work! Designed in Powerpoint 2007, all animations and transitions should work on machines that support it. A file is included for instructions on how to install fonts. *** UPDATED: Revised the powerpoint and added Treble Clef to all slides! *** The lines and spaces of the staff have never been more competitive! A new form of a Jeopardy, the follow-up from the "Instrument Jeopardy" is NOTATION Jeopardy! An authentic jeopardy game board with categories for Treble Clef Notation Levels 1, 2, 3, and 4 on the title slide. Students can elect to pick $200, $400, $600, $800, or $1000 answers. After clicking on the amount, the answer (a clue relating to the word) will appear on the next slide. Level 1 starts out easy with 3 to 4 letter words, but as we progress into Level 4, the words get a little more trickier -- along with the skips and steps between the lines and spaces! After the money is awarded (You can split sides of your class, boys vs girls, class vs class, however you want it!), there is a link in the bottom right hand corner to go back to the title screen and game board. Who am I -- Identifying Music Terminology!

Was that Presto or Largo? Staccato or Tenuto? Forte or Piano? Use "Who am I" to reinforce the music terminology you've been working on in your class! After a brief review, 6 musical examples will be played with all examples ascribing to either Presto or Largo, Staccato or Tenuto, and Forte or Piano. Students can do this in a variety of ways: -- On whiteboards and dry erase markers -- Through collaborative grouping or partner activity (using pre-cut cards as an idea -- On a SMARTboard or brightlink -- As a race (maybe boys vs girls, side A vs side B) After the example is played, you can advance the slide in the powerpoint to reveal the answer! The ultimate Boys vs Girls competition! If you're working on notes of the treble clef staff, this is a fun way for kids to competitively spell them out. First, we made a boys side (on the left of the screen) and girls side on the (on the right). A word will appear and the students have 10 seconds to spell the word out (there is a timer attached to the powerpoint and it will count down as soon as the slide appears). This games works best on a whiteboard that has magnetic backing as I print out notes and have the kids race as fast as they can to put them on. After the kids lock in their answer, the next slide reveals the notes. For notes that have F's and E's, the answer key has both top line, top space notes -- those F's and E's both count! :) Some are easy (CAB, DAB, DAD), some get a little tricky (BECCA, CABBAGE, DECADE) and so on. Towards the end they repeat, and feel free to edit and make your own! Have fun with this and if you have any questions, let me know!

Need to connect with your kids with their pop music through general music? Involve them in bucket drumming with Uptown Funk!
Although the previous shows 2, there are 6 color coded sections in "Sticktown Funk". Discuss form with the students and teach them (by rote) the rhythms on the powerpoint with the corresponding repeats (most are repeated 4 times). Then, apply it to drums!
All regular notation is to be played on the buckets (or drums, or ground, however you wish), and the X notation (with a down stem) are played as stick clicks above their head.

We got notes, yes we do, missing notes, all the way through! This is terrific on reinforcing aural training in the upper elementary students. Students are to listen to a short phrase of music made up of 5-9 beats. The music will be displayed on the powerpoint with several beats missing. Their job? Fill them in! I cut out paired eighths, quarters, and half notes and allow them to build them out on the floor and see if they can dictate what I'm playing. Only difference between regular dictation is there are a few cheaters in... but as we go through the examples (10 included), more beats disappear. Fill 'em in! The Middle - Play Along Auxiliary Percussion! (Drumming)

Need to connect with your kids with their pop music through general music? Involve them in play along percussion with rhythm sticks/drum sticks, tambourines, and if you got a coffee can or similar, you're set, "The Middle" by Zedd, Morris, and Grey! There are three all-color coded slides along with the instrumentation listed in each beat/ Teach the rhythms on the powerpoint with the corresponding repeats (most are repeated 4, or 8 times). Then, apply it to drumsticks (played on the floor or clicked together, on a practice pad), tambourines, and on the coffee tin! This is an all rote notation powerpoint and most are quarter and two eighth rhythms. Being able to identify rhythms being played is a key essential in any music classroom. How'd you like to make it extra challenging, partner?
In Rhythm Roundup, you'll have a variety of 1, 2, or 3 beat rhythms on the screen of all various notation (quarter, eighths, sixteenth, and rests). A musical example will be played and your little cowpokes will have to identify which rhythm is being played. Tap the right answer and it will illuminate green (all you need to do is advance the powerpoint or PDF!)
Included are 17 different music examples and tons of challenging rhythms to get your kids to think what they heard and line it up with what they see!

In Rainbow Rhythms, students will receive 8 color-coded rhythm cards. Print as many printouts as you need (ideally a class set and preferably on card stock) and issue to kids in a stack of Red, Orange, Blue, Green, Purple, Grey, Pink, and Teal after they are cut out.
You can print have 6 per page (larger cards) or 8 per page (smaller cards) dependent on how much ink you have.
If you don't have a lot of ink to spare, you can always opt to do half a class set and have the students pair up and share all 8 cards.
Students will then hear a musical example and use a few of their rhythm cards to match the example you just heard. Was it the blue rhythm and then red rhythm? Or maybe the blue rhythm and green rhythm?
Once the slide is advanced, the animation will appear and they will see the correct answer, card by card (or color by color!). Have you students check their answer and see what order their colors were!
There are 17 musical examples included with 4 beat rhythms, 6 beat rhythms, and 8 beat rhythms (2 cards, 3 cards, and 4 cards respectively)
I've also included the .png colored cards just in case you wanted to build your own in a separate powerpoint. Completely editable, even though the mp3s embedded arent. Heck, make your own :)

Instrument Pick-em (* Distance Learning Approved! *)

Reviewing the families of instruments with your kids? In Instrument Pick-em, students will hear a musical example of a woodwind, brass, percussion, or string instrument. They will then see a multiple choice listing of an assortment of instruments. They will then have to decide which instrument on the screen best matches the example being played.
Great for class, boy vs girl, individually assigned, or even for Distance Learning!

Melodious Masterpiece (* Distance Learning Approved! *)

Working on melodic direction with some of your upper level students in elementary? Lock your eyes and ears onto Melodious Masterpiece, an activity which engages the kids to think, listen, and use their knowledge to determine the direction of melody!
A melody, the main tune of the piece will be played on each example (10 examples included, ranging from 3 note melodies to 8 note melodies) along with 4 corresponding trapezoids. Students will have to select which trap best represents the melody being played and the answer will illuminate green on the following slide
Students do not need to know lines or spaces of the staff or even note names -- their previous understanding just rests with melodic direction (up and down!)
Can be great as a class activity, boys vs girls, or even assigned as distance learning!
Beat Boxing - Identifying Notation Duration (* Distance Learning Approved! *)

*BUILT FOR DISTANCE LEARNING, BUT CAN USE IN CLASS AS WELL!*
You've reviewed your notation with your students, and you want to make sure they know their quarters, eighth pairs, halves, wholes, etc, right?
In Beat Boxing, it's not the imitation of sounds, rather the students will be given a number of beats… maybe 3, maybe 5, maybe 6, or 2, or 4, and so on. This will be displayed on the powerpoint slide along with boxes of different combinations of beats (progressively, there will be more options as the game goes along)
But, only ONE of them will be the answer to the number shown
Have the students identify which box of rhythms matches the number shown. Quarter Notes, Eighth Note Pairs, Whole Notes, AND dotted notes are in this series (remember, the dot adds half the value of the note that precedes it!)
In addition, there's a REMIX at the end where the boxes are reversed. Ahhh!

Among Rhythm ("Among Us" themed Rhythm Practice)

A wild request from a Facebook group, here's Among Rhythm, a game where students will perform rhythm "tasks" before advancing through the game to the end.
Students will play this as the "Crewmates" and view a rhythm. Teachers will ask the students to perform the rhythm (spoken, clapped, or performed) and then advance the slide to the next task
There are 20 different tasks with Quarter Notes, Eighth Notes, Quarter Rests, Half Notes, and Dynamics (also reading rhythms up and down!)
You can play this with mysterious music in the background to set an ambient game mood.

Common Sense (Identifying Errors in Common Meter)

"4 beats in a measure with the quarter note getting the beat", the time old concept we ingrain in our students' mind! Assess your students by letting them identify inaccuracies in a measure of music with "Common Sense"
Students will view examples of a measure of Common Time (4/4) and find the measure that has too many or not enough beats to equal common time!
After the students select the correct measure, advance the slide to find out the answer. You can then trigger a discussion of what made it inaccurate (too many beats, not enough beats, etc)
The latter half of the lesson shows you one measure of music with a [ ? ] box. Students will have to select (from a multiple choice selection of answers) which answer would best fit in the box to complete a measure of 4/4
Off the Beat! (Rhythm reading with offbeats)

Getting into advanced rhythms with your kids, try to ace these rhythm examples of Off the Beat!
In this presentation, there are 30 3, 4, 5, and 6 beat rhythms to challenge your kids on the "and" counts. Have your students play this on percussion instruments (such as tubanos, StickStations, boomwhackers, rhythm sticks, or anythign that will produce music!)
The 21st example splits into an "A" section and a "B" sections where you can split your class (boys and girls, side 1 side 2, etc) to perform a 2-part rhythm. You can even experiment around with the last slides and play the on barred instruments on difference pitches (C and E for the "A" section and G and C for the "B" section) to create polyrhythmic harmony
Included are 5 percussive grooves to play as a background supplement (all at various tempi)
GAME ON! - A rhythm-building gaming resource

Want a great way to entice some of your boys in your general music class? Try GAME ON!, a gaming themed rhythm challenge that will suit all of your students, especially some of those gamers out there!
In “GAME ON!”, students will see a popular game or game series for multiple consoles (Xbox, PlayStation, etc)
They will then use rhythm cards provided in their “bank” of cards to build out the name of the game in a rhythm they feel best fits the name. There will be a series of one beat spaces to give the students a clue on which cards fit in which beats – be very specific as only a few cards will be chosen out of the bank
Advance the slide and find out the students’ rhythm and see if it matches the rhythm on the screen.
You can use this an assessment for all students or even see if they can identify it in a certain amount of time (10 seconds, 15 seconds, etc). Even try a boys vs girls or team vs team to see who can get it the fastest!
Included are 12 game titles and a printout of triplets, quarters, and eighth note pair cards for your students.
