This 4-page pre-reading handout provides students with important background information for understanding William Shakespeare's Julius Caesar. This resource includes a two-page handout on the history of the Roman Republic. The resource also included is a comprehension check and answer key so that teachers can assess whether students have understood important details from the handout.

Learning about the history of the Roman Republic will provide students with the contextual information necessary for understanding certain lines in Shakespeare's Julius Caesar. You could have students read this handout for homework before starting the play; or you could have students read the handout aloud together in class before giving them the comprehension check worksheet.

INTRO TO SHAKESPEARE: Biography, Globe Theater, Language, & Meter

This product will allow your students to easily understand and analyze Robert Frost's "Nothing Gold Can Stay" by breaking it down line-by-line!

Instruct your students to fold the paper in half the long way, and to cut along the black lines into the midline of the paper. They will end up with a long, skinny version of the poem on the front of the flaps, and analysis question inside.

As they read the poem, they will peel back the flap to reveal questions that ask them to analyze the poem for symbolism, mood, imagery, allusion, and theme. I have included an answer key of sample responses for your convenience.

You can use this product in an interactive notebook, as part of your analysis of chapter 6 of S.E Hinton's The Outsiders, in conjunction with The Fault in Our Stars, with Catcher in the Rye, or as part of a poetry study! Please ask if you have any questions!

This is an analysis of my FAVORITE quote from Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury, which appears on page 79 of my version of the text (the one with the red cover and book of matches). There are 4 questions that can be used as a Do Now/Bellringer, Exit Ticket, partner activity, or even as a homework assignment. Answers are included!

It’s not books you need, it’s some of the things that once were in books. The same things could be in the ‘parlor families’ today. The same infinite detail and awareness could be projected through the radios and televisors, but are not. No, no, it’s not books at all you’re looking for! Take it where you can find it, in old phonograph records, old motion pictures, and in old friends; look for it in nature and look for it in yourself. Books were only one type of receptacle where we stored a lot of things we were afraid we might forget. There is nothing magical in them, at all. The magic is only in what books say, how they stitched the patches of the universe together into one garment for us” (Bradbury 79).

This is a very simple double entry journal assignment. Over the course of the week, students are asked to read their book at home and in class. As they read, they will practice reading strategies and identifying literary concepts. They will cite their quote on the left, and analyze it on the right.

The excerpt from "Once Upon a Time When We Were Colored" by Clifton L. Taulbert appears in my school's 8th grade red McDougal Littell textbook. In my copies of Fahrenheit 451, Neil Gaiman introduces the novel with an essay written in April 2013. It's called: “Ray Bradbury, Fahrenheit 451 and What Science Fiction Is and Does”. This activity requires you to make copies of the essay for each student. Step 1 directs them to actively read and annotate the text. Step 2 requires them to answer seven questions about the essay. They will need to refer back to the text and explain their answers in complete sentences.

An answer key has been included for your convenience!

As students read their independent reading/ reading workshop book over the course of the week, they will select 5 words or phrases that the author used that stood out to them, or had a particularly strong impact. They will put the 5 words, definitions, and an analysis of how the author used them onto one piece of blank paper. The end result will be one page of visually appealing information. I used this for independent reading, but you could use it for a specific novel or even literature circles. This is an assignment that asks students to identify 6 examples of adversity that the Wiley College Debate team had to overcome on the left, and explain how they did so using evidence from the movie on the right. Lastly, they are asked to make 2 connections to works of literature they've recently read.

I show this movie after reading a number of pieces from the 8th grade Pearson text about African Americans facing diversity, studying relevant court cases, and reading the novel "Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry", but you could really have the students connect the movie back to whatever texts you're reading at the time that are relevant.

This engaging assignment asks students to think critically about the events detailed by an unreliable narrator in Edgar Allan Poe's The Tell-Tale Heart. Did the old man truly have no inkling of the narrator's hatred of him? Did the police officers really "chat pleasantly" as they interrogated the increasingly agitated man?

In the assignment, students must consider these questions and more, then write a short narrative through the perspective of either the old man or a police officer at the scene. The assignment is fun but more importantly, it leads to sophisticated discussion about the concept of an unreliable narrator. This is a perfect supplement for any unit on Edgar Allan Poe!
