Where do we use school mathematics in real life?

The following complete guide sets out ALL the mathematics we do in middle and early high school used in the RSA Public Key Cryptosystem.

RSA Encryption is one of the most modern and powerful methods of encryption and is used by computer scientists, big banks and websites who need to secure data.

Do not be surprised, the list is complete and no other, more complicated mathematics is ever used in RSA Encryption.
Topics done in grade school: Factors, Multiples, Products, Times Tables, Division, Remainders, Integers, Prime Numbers, Composite Numbers, Exponents, Rules for Divisibility etc.

Topics not specifically done in grade school but for which 7th-10th grade students possess ALL the mathematics knowledge: Modular Arithmetic, Successive Squaring, The Euclidean Algorithm, The Euler Phi Function, Euler's Formula, The Extended Euclidean Algorithm

It is important that students know (and that teachers always remind them) when they are busy with these topics, that they are learning fundamental mathematics needed to encrypt data and secret messages.

What is a Surd? This is a surprisingly slippery topic. As a teacher or tutor, we might have an understanding of what one is, but there are a lot of loopholes, traps and exceptions. This poster helps! We have found in our research that explanations of Surds often omit certain pieces of important information in order to generate a simpler understanding, only for the student to be told that there are some exceptions to the rules. This poster therefore aims to set a firm grounding on which to build an understanding of surds without having to navigate through the maze of exceptions and loopholes. Ever needed a review activity on solving equations that was fun and engaging for your students? Team Target Review is a cooperative and competitive activity designed to get students thinking, talking, and working together.

Teams of 2-4 students work together to complete increasing levels of difficulty on solving equations. As students progress, you can quickly assess mastery and give intervention help on the spot.

This activity works great as an engaging review session before an assessment, a quick(ish) activity on one of those pesky minimum days where you have limited time, or as part of a block period when you want to break up the direct instruction.

This activity includes:

-Suggested activity instructions (based on how I run this in my classroom).

-5 rounds with four problems each of targeted review on solving equations for 8th grade.

-Complete worked out solutions for each round.

This is a condensed version of the 8th Grade Math Common Core Standards. I tried my best to squeeze it all on one page but just couldn't! I'll Keep trying... but for now just Statistics and Probability got booted to the second page.

This poster is intended to lay the groundwork for a very basic understanding of how Decimals work, without relying on a comparison to Fractions or Percentages at the very first hurdle. We think that a student should understand the principles of decimals in relation to numbers which are a power of 10, before comparing and contrasting them with Fractions and Percentages.
