The Steps:

1. A central statement will be announced to the class and we will define the two sides

of the debate (Agree/Disagree).

2. You will move to the side

of the room with the position that you intend to defend.

3. A timer will be set for 5 minutes, and the debate will start between the two groups.

4. Be concise and attempt to keep you contributions to less than 30 seconds each. The goal is to have an up-tempo debate, where the arguments for and against the prompt are batted back and forth with quick, verbal strokes. When the timer goes off, the conversation is immediately over.

5. A new prompt is displayed and we start another round of quick debates.

Students will meet with either an A or B partner OR find a partner with a matching color circle using their cards. They will then use the interview questions provided in the card to interview their partner and present them to the class!

  • 8 Variations of cards with either an A or B and 1 of 4 different colored circles
  • Each card comes with 3 interviewing partner questions

Entrance Card Directions:

  • Pass out one of the cards to each student (note the letter A or B and small color circles on the front of each card)
  • The following is written on each card:

- 3 things you want to share about yourself

- 2 words to describe you

- 1 favorite thing

  • Instruct students to find a partner (a person who has the same letter or color circle on the back of their card).
  • Have students answer the questions with their partner.
  • Each student should write their partner's responses on a seperate piece of paper.
  • Have each set of partners introduce each other to the class using the entrance cards.
  • Do the activity again the same day or a different day but have students find a new partner using either the letter or colored circles (whichever was not used first)

Directions:

  • Label each of the four corners of your room with signs for the following: Strongly Agree, Agree, Disagree, and Strongly Disagree.

  • Pose one of the statements to students.

  • Students move quietly to the corner that best represents their individual answer to the statement.

  • Encourage students to think about their personal responses, not just follow their friends or the crowd.

  • Once students are in the corners, give them a couple of minutes to share their responses before posing the next statement. You can turn the activity into a debate.

Directions:

  • Students will circle up in groups of 6.
  • Students in each group number off 1-6.
  • Teacher rolls the digital dice and clicks pause on the embedded dice rolling video to land on a number.
  • The student whose number correlates with the number shown on the dice answers the question to their group.
  • If time allows let the conversations flow naturally after each question. Students will love pointing out similarities/differences in interests and experiences.

Directions:

  • Print and laminate multiple sets of the image cards.
  • Divide the class into multiple groups.
  • Group members take turns drawing a card from a pile.
  • The person who drew a card must not show their team the image or use words to describe it. Ie if it is a rainbow you can only use shapes, lines, and location to describe the drawing and cannot say things like, "it forms after the rain."
  • The group member describes and gives directions on how to draw the image.
  • The team then tries to use listening skills to copy the drawing based on the directions given.
  • Repeat until all cards have been used.

Directions:

  • Put students into groups or breakout rooms of 4-6 students
  • Go over the directions with students:
  • Wait for the impromptu topic to show up on the screen (ex: why schools should have a designated nap time)
  • Decide who in the group will start and that student will have 30 seconds to prepare for their speech after the topic is revealed
  • After 30 seconds the student will present their topic for 30 seconds

Optional Points:

  • Secretly give points/take away points from group members on a small whiteboard or notebook paper
  • Groups can earn by: Focusing on good voice, being creative with their responses, eye contact, posture, using an opening/closing statement, and making good points for your topic
