8th Grade English Language Arts Rubrics (by price, low to high)

NEW Personal Narrative Journal Rubric FREEBIE

*Updated 4/28/2021*

This update does not change the content of the rubric. The look of the resource has just been revamped!

I created this rubric to help my middle students know what is expected of them when completing a journal writing prompt for a personal narrative. Often times, my students take advantage of free writing and do not think of it as a "real grade." Giving them something to base their writing off of gives them more direction and motivation to turn in their best work, while also sticking to their personal story/experiences.

*This was intended for, BUT IS NOT LIMITED TO, the global pandemic COVID-19 experience. My students are given a weekly prompt via Google Classroom as well as this rubric to follow.

If your students will be doing a Socratic Seminar in class, make things easy on yourself and score them using this teacher-friendly rubric during the discussion! It includes the following categories:

1. Analysis and use of details and evidence

2. Understanding of the text

3. Active listening, speaking, and behavior

4. Preparation

There is a space at the bottom for additional teachers comments, as well as an area for students to write a reflection on their performance and the grade they received.

This rubric can be used with ANY text!

This rubric looks at 6 different areas when students are being assessed on writing a research report. The areas that are reviewed on the rubric are as follows: research report topic and flow - opening and closing relate with one another, using quotations throughout from any sources used, research materials used relate to topic researched, staying on task, grammar/punctuation/spelling, and working with others. This rubric scores research report writing assignment out of 18 possible points. The rating scale use is a 3, 2, 1, & 0.

The resource also includes a three-page quiz in which students have to identify the type of figurative language used in each of 40 quotations from Romeo and Juliet. For teachers, the resource features an answer key that will enable you to grade students' quizzes quickly and efficiently.

This guided descriptive essay asks students to describe a nutcracker. There are three separate options to use based on the level and ability of your students.

Administrators walk into classrooms for observations and hear rigorous classroom talk among students. Ultimately, and this has happened with me, administrators may say, “Students were engaged in rigorous classroom talk, and that's great, but how are you tracking this discussion?” YIKES! Evidently, it all comes down to how you’re collecting and keeping track of data even during Classroom Talk.

This resource includes 12 different Accountable Talk / Classroom Talk Discussion Trackers (in different variations). Two of the Accountable Data Trackers are "Student Trackers" and titled “My Discussion Tracker” where students can keep track of their own participation during classroom talk. These trackers enable you to keep track of who's making:
