Before we begin to see how engineering and technology affect our lives on a daily basis, let’s look at what is encompassed under the CTAE (Career, Technical and Agricultural Education) umbrella. We are going to do this by looking at a CTAE Pathway at the college level vs. a Math/Science Pathway at the college level. We are going to look at Kennesaw State University’s programs in several of these categories. Since KSU’s merger with Southern Polytechnic College of Engineering and Technology, this is a great place to look at several college options in each of these pathways.

You're about to start a Robotics Unit and you're looking for an informative and FUN way to introduce students to robots. THis Web Quest gives them the history of robots, looks at different types of robots and includes thought provoking video links.

They'll browse the websites of world leaders in robots, both humanoid and manufacturing. They'll complete charts and tables. They'll answer critical thinking questions.

This is a two week unit that introduces Scratch and includes a cluminating activity. Students will learn the basics of Scratch coding and then show off their knowledge with a Scratch animation based on a story that they create.

Coding - Students learn to code objects in Scratch! Animations, backgrounds, letters, characters, scenery...they learn how to insert and animate all of these different objects.

Writing - Students will write a one page fairy tale and then animate the fairy tale using Scratch! they learn how to use the screen record tool in PowerPoint to bring their fairy tale into their slide show.

Sharing - We take a day or two where everyone loads their fairy tale on the computers and we walk around reading & watching everyone's fairy tales.

Learning about Design: Elements of Art, Shapes & Color is a three-part lesson to give students an introduction to design. This is perfect for a technology class that focuses on web design or graphic design, or for an art class. The first lesson has students create a PowerPoint (or Google Slides presentation) to define the Seven Elements of Art in their own words and give picture examples of three areas of design for each. In the second lesson, students complete a short WebQuest (Internet Scavenger Hunt) to answer questions about how designers use shapes to convey a message. Finally, in the third lesson, students explore how designers use color by researching information on the Internet and completing a color chart. This project based learning activity has students explore a college of their choice, research information about majors, classes, what life at college will be like and what it will cost and compile that data into Microsoft Word. Using that information, students create a poster to showcase their college of choice in a poster using either Microsoft Word or Google Docs that is suitable to print and display.

Redesign a Bedroom using Microsoft Excel gives students an opportunity to research items to totally redesign their bedroom and then, working with a given budget, to create a Microsoft Excel spreadsheet budget of those items. This is a great project to do with students who have a beginning knowledge of Microsoft Excel to reinforce those skills.
