Free 8th Grade Literature Resources

Are you looking for an interesting way to integrate your students' love for anime and your love for literary elements? This front and back worksheet can be assigned virtually or printed for independent work. Students will watch an episode of their favorite anime and analyze for setting, conflict, theme, mood, and symbolism. This resource can be used for extension work, passion projects, or a flex day in ELA.

Print these fun bookmarks on colored or white cardstock and provide them to your students. The goal is to challenge the students to read and keep up with the number of books they read. Once they have finished a book, they are to color it to reflect they have finished the book.

You may also choose to laminate and them and have them use a permanent marker to cross out the emoji.

Display your classroom rules with some quotes by a few famous authors such as William Shakespeare, Ernest Hemingway, and Stephen King! Makes a nice classroom display.

This 4-page pre-reading handout provides students with important background information for understanding William Shakespeare's Julius Caesar. This resource includes a two-page handout on the history of the Roman Republic. The resource also included is a comprehension check and answer key so that teachers can assess whether students have understood important details from the handout.

Learning about the history of the Roman Republic will provide students with the contextual information necessary for understanding certain lines in Shakespeare's Julius Caesar. You could have students read this handout for homework before starting the play; or you could have students read the handout aloud together in class before giving them the comprehension check worksheet.

Character traits and analysis fun!

Have some outdoor fun (or use butcher paper for indoors) with sidewalk novel characters! Students choose a character from their novels then do body outlines with sidewalk chalk. Fill these with physical and character traits from quotes within the novel...full directions for implementing and making a competitive game. Can be used with all ages and novels. Excellent for comprehension and assessment.

This is a free preview of a play script for William Shakespeare's Macbeth, which has been written to be suitable for ages 9 to 14. Macbeth tells the story of a fierce warrior who meets three strange witches on his way home after a battle. The witches tell him that he will be King. At first Macbeth thinks they are lying but then he starts to believe the witches' prophecies.

He sends a letter to his wife, Lady Macbeth, who persuades him to kill the King and claim the throne. He does this but the couple find the guilt too much, and then the previous King’s sons come back for revenge. The story ends in death for Macbeth, as Macduff and Malcolm come to claim back the throne!

This is a graphic organizer for A Midsummer Night's Dream that helps students to track the highly confusing "love arrows" between the four young lovers. You can give this to students at the beginning of the play and ask them to track the love arrows as they read. My students have told me that this simple worksheet has helped them tremendously to keep the characters straight!

Answer key with brief explanations of arrow changes is also included for your reference.

This syllabus is for a 9th-grade English course on World Literature. The syllabus features literary texts guaranteed to keep modern-day teenagers highly engaged. For the syllabus is focused on a topic which globally connected teenagers find intrinsically interesting: namely, coming-of-age literature from around the globe. In this 9th-grade English course, students learn about how the experience of growing up is shaped by social conditions and cultural traditions which are specific to countries like Afghanistan, England, Iran, and the United States — all while reading amazing literature!

Skills Objectives: The curriculum is designed to build foundational skills in the analysis of literary form. It equips students with the tools and techniques for analyzing the formal elements of various literary genres: novels, plays, poems, and graphic novels. The play script is suitable for ages 9 to 14. Richard III tells the story of Richard – a humpbacked member of the royal family who had a deep desire to be king. However, he was fifth in line to the throne with four close family members ahead of him. The play follows the story of his murderous journey to the top, and his eventual demise to Henry at the Battle of Bosworth.
