Get ready for an exciting Romeo and Juliet escape room! Students work in small teams to help Romeo and Juliet meet before Juliet’s wedding to Paris. They must solve a series of puzzles, each one based on the play.

First, students decode a secret letter using numbers and letters. Then, they match characters with their correct descriptions. They unscramble famous lines from the play and choose the right potion to help Juliet fake her death. In another challenge, students sort characters into the Montague and Capulet families. Each puzzle brings them closer to the final clue.

The activities are fast, fun, and full of teamwork. Students need to read carefully, think critically, and work together under pressure. Each puzzle ties directly to the characters, themes, and events from Romeo and Juliet, helping students review the story in a creative way.

He has trapped them in the room until they can show that they do in fact care about the future of humankind.

• Bradbury FAQs: In the first task, students must complete a crossword puzzle with questions about Ray Bradbury. Once complete, they must unscramble circled boxes to reveal the first code.
• Write Every Day: Did you know that Ray Bradbury wrote every single day since he was 12 years old? In the second task, students must find 25 titles of short stories, novels, and screenplays that Bradbury wrote in a word search. Remaining letters will form the second code.
• Extra! Extra! Read All About it!: In the third task, students must match fictional newspaper headlines with the short story by Bradbury that they represent. This task is in the form of a mat puzzle and the code is revealed when students have matched all short stories correctly.
• If Only We Had Taller Been: In the fourth task, students must perform a close reading of one of Bradbury's most famous poems, If Only We Had Taller Been. He read this poem in 1971 the day before the Space Probe Mariner 9 landed on Mars. The letters of the multiple choice questions about the poem form the fourth code. *Please note that the text of the poem cannot be included in this resource due to copyright restrictions.*
• Jig Saw Quote: In the fifth and final task, students must assemble a jig saw puzzle with a notable Ray Bradbury quote.

• Plot it Out: In the second task, students must order the plot events of The Necklace on Freytag's Pyramid.
• Scavenger Hunt: In the third task, students must complete a word scavenger hunt within the story.
• Criss-Cross: In the fourth task, students must complete a crossword puzzle about major plot points, characters, setting, and quotes from the story.
• Jig Saw Quote: In the fifth and final task, students must complete a jig saw puzzle that reveals a quote from Bilal Zahoor that connects to a major theme within the tale. Once they figure it out and bring it to you, students earn back the necklace and escape the room!

How does it work?

In this escape room, students will try to escape from the brutal cold of the Yukon by solving 5 different skills-based puzzles, discovering codes, and finding clues along the way.

• Personification Destination: In the first task, students fill in the blanks with personification quotes within To Build a Fire.
• Figuratively Speaking: In the second task, students draw lines to match literary and poetic devices within the story to their definitions. (Devices covered: metaphor, simile, onomatopoeia, hyperbole, allusion, repetition, alliteration, idiom, symbol)
• Multiple Choice: In the third task, students answer challenging multiple choice questions about To Build a Fire.
• Criss-Cross: In the fourth task, students solve a crossword puzzle with questions about literary elements, quotes, and plot details within the story.
• Word Search: In the fifth and final task, students must complete a word search of the first 4 codes. The letters that remain spell the final code to escape from the Yukon!

I invented the take on this game several years ago and it has become one of my students' and my favorite days of the whole school year. To be festive, I love to give this assignment on the anniversary of Shakespeare's actual death, April 23, but with the subject at hand, it also works well as a Halloween lesson plan.
