Real-Life Math Fun Activity! Practical Stats - Do tall students jump high?

By Daniel

It is always a good strategy to review essential skills with your students, and this is right up there with the most essential!

Do tall students jump high and far? Do the same students jump high and far? Students collect their own quantitative data to answer these and other questions. The data collection does not take long. Afterwards, students calculate the measures of central tendency - mean, median, mode, Q1, Q3, min, max, range and upper and lower outliers (extremes). The handout (with complete answer key for the teacher) contains the formulas students need in order to do all calculations.

This project has been tried, tested and refined in my own middle and high school classes for many years.

Quantitative Data, Measures of Central Tendency, Mean, Median, Mode, Quartile 1, Quartile 3, Interquartile Range, Outliers, Extremes, Data, Project, Range, Minimum, Maximum.

You might also want to include these resources in the Series on Stats and Data!

Seasonal Town Development Math Project - Geometry - Lines and Angles

By MsNerdWood

Are you looking for a fun way to assess angles, lines, using a protractor to draw angles, and angle relationships? Then look no further! This fun math activity provides students with an opportunity to be an Urban Planner. They will use list of instructions to create their own Seasonal Town (Falling Leaves Town, Winter Wonderland Town, Spring Showers Town and Summer Sun Town). Each project has the same set of instructions but the street names are different to reflect the appropriate seasonal town name. This will allow you to pick a season or even create the four seasons in your classroom.

This project helps students demonstrate their knowledge in the following:

  • parallel lines
  • perpendicular lines
  • transversal lines
  • acute angles
  • obtuse angles
  • scalene triangle
  • equilateral triangle
  • isosceles triangle
  • quadrilaterals
  • z, c, and f patterns creating from transversal lines
  • relationships between intersecting lines

There is also a rubric included for assessment purposes. I have used this project with my students and they have always enjoyed it and its quick to mark. Bonus! Students will likely need a couple of classes to complete this assessment and I would recommend having them complete a rough copy first to plan out their town.

Enjoy!

Out to Eat Decimal Project

By EduCraft Marketplace

This is a simple project, but it adds in real life scenario of what the cost is going out to eat. Students end up shocked at the cost of going out to eat! The students pick out a restaurant of their choice (can download the menu offline), "go out to eat" with three other family members, order, determine cost, sales tax and tip for a total of going out to eat for 4 people. This could be a group project with four students going out to eat and seeing what the cost is for each. Either way, it shows their decimal skills with basic math operations and gives them a new appreciation of going out to eat!
