Teaching map projections can be challenging. This lesson is an easy way to give students the foundation they need to understand what map projections are and how each has its own level of accuracies and distortions based on the size and shape of land masses and measurement/distance between points. This works very well with my students and is a fund group cooperative activity that requires higher-level thinking skills and or helps students develop higher-level thinking skills by analyzing various map projections, and determining their accuracies and distortions.

LESSON: MAP PROJECTIONS: WHICH ONE WOULD YOU USE?

GRADE LEVEL: 7-12th

TIME FRAME: 90-120 MINUTES (TWO 60-MINUTE CLASS PERIODS)

TYPE OF ACTIVITY: GROUP COOPERATION ACTIVITY
NOTE: ADJUST MARGINS UNDER PAGE SETUP BEFORE PRINTING or SCALE TO FIT TO AVOID GRAPHICS FROM BEING CUT OFF.

OBJECTIVE:

• The learner will familiarize his/herself with the following map projections: Robinson Projections, Mercator Projections, Goode Projection, & Hammer Projection
• The learner will understand theaccuracies and distortions of flat map projections.
• The learner will understand the three variables of map projections: Shape, size &
  distance.
• The learner will investigate and explore various map projections to determine their accuracies and distortions.
• The learner will be able to determine what map projections can be used for accuracies of size, shape & distance.

MATERIALS:

• Presentation: Google slide format & PowerPoint presentation (included in zip file).
• Comparison Chart Listening Chart (1 per student)
• Activity Instructional Sheet: Map It! (1 per group)
• Internet connections to obtain a copy of map projections. (For each group)
• Printer to be able to print the map projection.
• Poster boards or butcher paper are cut into the size of poster boards. (One per group)
• Rubric: Map It Group Presentation
• Provide students with glue, markers, crayons, colored pencils, rulers, and scissors.

PREPARATION:

• Review the presentation and be prepared to discuss the accuracies and distortions of the maps presented.
• Make a copy of the listening guide for each student.
• Have students bring posterboards for group assignments or cut butcher paper into
  poster board size pieces.
• Make a copy of the Activity Instructional Sheet: Map It! 1 per group.
• Make sure your students will have access to the internet to find a map projection
  to examine and a printer that will allow them to print off the map projection.
• Print a rubric for each group so they know the requirements.

CLASSROOM SETUP:

• A desk and or table will be set up for students to work in teams of two’s, three’s, or with whatever the instructor feels comfortable.

INTRODUCTION: (10 minutes)

• PowerPoint Presentation or Google Slide Show (This is the same presentation)
• The PowerPoint presentation is included in the zip file.
• GOOGLE DOC SLIDE SHOW -- will receive with the purchase

PROCEDURE: (Group Reading Activity—30 minutes)
Divide the class into groups. Provide each group with the Instruction sheet: Map It! As well as a rubric, poster board, crayons, colored pencils, markers, glue, a ruler and scissors. Explain the instructions to the class based on the Instruction Sheet: Map It. Review what the group needs to present during their group presentation using the grading rubric.

CLOSURE / EVALUATION: (20-30 minutes)
Students will present as a group their findings regarding their map projection.

Definition:

A Mini Socratic Seminar is a scholarly discussion of an essential question in which student opinions are shared and refined through dialogue with other students in small groups. In this mini format, the teacher or seminar leader facilitates the discussion for the small groups.

Purpose:

In a Socratic Seminar, participants seek to answer an essential question and gain deeper understanding of laws, ideas, issues, values, and/or principles presented through rigorous and thoughtful dialogue

Advantages:

• Teaches respect for diverse ideas, people, and practices
• Enhances students' knowledge
• Creates a community of inquiry
• Develops critical thinking, problem solving, speaking, and listening skills
• Clarifies one's ideas, ethics and values
• Maximizes student participation

Mini Seminar Directions:

1. Students are placed in small groups or virtual break out rooms of 5-6 students.
2. Teacher poses the essential question.
3. Teacher chooses a Socratic Seminar leader for each group.
4. The leader facilitates the seminar discussion by guiding group members to a deeper and clarified consideration of the ideas, a respect for varying points of view, and adherence to and respect for the seminar process.
5. Students may pose new questions when the discussion is exhausted. New questions posed must relate to students’ ideas and contributions in response to the initial essential question.

7. Students complete the participant checklist during the last 5 minutes of class.

Through the critical analysis of primary sources, this unique lesson will have students explore how Native American residential schools in the United States served as sites of both cultural loss and cultural persistence.

Using primary sources, the gallery walk begins in the early beginnings of the residential school experience with the first school opening its’ doors at Carlisle, Pennsylvania, and then carries on to present-day issues. This resource will bring the photographs to life as students will be provided with additional background information that will come in the form of first hand accounts and testimonies of the people who experienced the residential schools. Lately, upsetting things have been happening in the world and our students are very much aware of them. Tens of thousands of people have protested on the streets to make their voices heard about all kinds of issues that students care about including racism, inequality, policing, discrimination, etc. Protests have spread across the nation and seem to rival the historic demonstrations of the Civil Rights Movement. It is important for us to bring these topics into our classrooms—because students want to be part of the conversation and share their thoughts and feelings about the very issues that affect them.

This resource features 48 Protest questions that can be used as writing prompts, discussion/debate questions, or both! These questions encourage students to think deeply about protests, the root causes of them, their experiences with them, the effectiveness of them, how they compare to the protests of the past - AND SO MUCH MORE! These questions can spark some deep conversations among students. Have your students see themselves through the lens of an investigator, exploring a complex and important inquiry…. ‘What factors caused the Great Depression’? Students, or your class investigators, will examine a variety of context clues and information that will help them solve this question. Students will identify the causal clues along with its effects, and then create a ‘LOOP’ (web) diagram that will serve to demonstrate their understandings of how these underlying causes interconnect with one another. This unit will prompt your students to become active learners in their pursuit of solving the mystery.

*This unit will have students explore dynamics of the 1920's, Great Depression, and the New Deal.

Begin your study of the Civil Rights Movement in a powerful way by having students participate in a gallery walk activity. Using primary sourced drawings and photographs, the gallery walk begins in Africa, and moves through slavery, the Reconstruction and Jim Crow, and carries on to present-day issues. This lesson will have students analyze and explore secondary and primary sources of information that pertain to the Japanese- American internment experience in the United States during WWII. Students will critically examine the way in which the internment camps were presented to the public through the portrayal of the U.S. government and their use of propaganda, and from the drawings and paintings of the Japanese-American internees who lived in the camps.
