I use interactive notebooks in my classroom, this is a flipbook that can be glued or into a composition notebook. The flip book syllabus will also fit in a larger spiral notebook, as well. This word search puzzle contains 43 words of vocabulary related to Columbus day, it is designed to help students make sense of the story of Christopher Columbus and his journey to the Americas in 1492.

Through this activity, students will show increased vocabulary and understanding of why Columbus Day celebrations occur in the United States.

The words may be hidden in any direction (including diagonally but not backward) and there may be some overlap. This makes for a somewhat challenging puzzle. Lots of classroom fun is guaranteed.

This lesson was designed to be used on the first day of a year-long 11th-grade American Literature course. The lesson includes a poetry packet with 7 poems by diverse American authors. Each of the poems raises important questions about what "America" represents. A land of freedom and equality? A refuge for immigrants? A diverse and inclusive nation? Or a land with entrenched inequality? A saber-rattling evil empire?
