The Concrete, Pictorial, Abstract Approach is an effective teaching approach that helps to develop a deep and sustainable understanding of mathematics in students.

When integrated into your classroom it helps to build on your students existing understanding and making complex mathematical concepts accessible to all.

Concrete: refers to the 'doing' stage. Where students manipulate concrete materials to solve problems. This is the first stage of the approach or framework.

Pictorial: refers to the 'seeing' stage. Where students create visual presentations of the concrete objects that they have just used to model the problem. This allows students to make connections between the objects they have just used and the abstract pictures they have drawn.

Abstract: refers to the 'symbolic' stage. Where students use numbers and symbols to model a problem. This is the final stage to mastering a concept. Students will not move onto this stage if they do not have a solid understanding of the concrete and pictorial representations.

It is also important to go back and forth, continually practicing each stage to reinforce mathematical concepts.

Practice using function notation with numerical values and algebraic expressions

Worked solutions are included

5 problem solving questions using the formulae for the nth term of an Arithmetic sequence and the sum of the first n terms of an Arithmetic series.

This can be done as a worksheet in class or as an extension homework

4 differentiated exercise on changing the subject - rated from 1 banana (easiest) to 4 bananas (very challenging)

This worksheet practises finding the slope and intercept from the equation. This also gives more practice to graphing equations by finding the slope and intercept.

Templates and solutions are included

In this graph matching activity there are two sets of questions with graphs and equations of linear functions.

In each one there are 9 graphs and one blank grid. There are 9 equations.

Students have to match each equation to each graph.

There is one graph without an equation - students need to work it out.

There is also one equation without a graph - students need to draw it on the blank axes

Using sine, cosine and tangent functions with right angled triangles. This resource gets students to recognise the hypotenuse, opposite and adjacent sides. This also get students practising using the calculator to use both the trig functions and their inverses.

Level Ups are a fun way for your students to practice or review defining functions and comparing functions. Aligned to the common core standards, this Level Ups activity includes 5 differentiated tasks that increase in rigor. The task cards begin with pre-requisite skills involving identifying the slope and y-intercept of linear functions in different representations, then "level up" all the way to creating and comparing functions that are both linear and non-linear.

Students start at level zero and work their way up to level 4, giving them accurate feedback on what they have mastered, and what they still need to work on. This lesson works as a great way to review what is and is not a function, or as preparation for an upcoming assessment.

This activity includes:

-Suggested activity instructions (based on how I run this in my classroom).

-Five levels with 6 - 11 questions each.

-Complete answer keys for each level.
