This resource is a short quiz or test that can be used as a formative assessment to assesses students' abilities to use different context clues types: definition, synonym, antonym, example, and inference - to determine the meaning of unknown words. The test consists of 12 questions in the following format:

Questions 1-5 are multiple-choice questions that ask students to read 1-2 sentences and determine the meaning of the underlined word. Students choose a multiple- choice answer.

Questions 5-10 are two-part questions which 1) asks students to read the sentence with the underlined word and determine its meaning. Students write what they think is the meaning of the underlined word based on context clues used. 2) Then, students are asked to specify which context clue type is illustrated in the sentence(s).

These example sentences illustrate a context clue type (which is also provided). Students are then asked to use the given examples to write their own sentences appropriately illustrating the context clue type provided.
