These no prep resources are meant to engage students and help them understand and showcase their skills. Before students can solve quadratics, they need to know how to factor quadratics. Level Ups are a fun way for your students to practice or review defining functions and comparing functions. Aligned to the common core standards, this Level Ups activity includes 5 differentiated tasks that increase in rigor. The task cards begin with pre-requisite skills involving identifying the slope and y-intercept of linear functions in different representations, then "level up" all the way to creating and comparing functions that are both linear and non-linear.

Students start at level zero and work their way up to level 4, giving them accurate feedback on what they have mastered, and what they still need to work on. This lesson works as a great way to review what is and is not a function, or as preparation for an upcoming assessment.

SCOOT:

Put a question card on each desk.

Give each student an answer sheet and a pencil.

Have each student answer the question card on their desk and record their answer on their answer sheet. Make sure to remind them to answer the correct number.

Give students x (I gave my students 2 minutes, but it’s up to you) minutes to answer each question. Then say “SCOOT”.

When you say “scoot”, students will quickly stand up, leave their card at their desk and move to the next desk with the next number. They will then start working immediately on the next question.

When all students are finished, check the answers as a group.

Other ideas for using task cards in the classroom:

EXIT SLIP:

Have a student choose a card and let him solve the equation before leaving class.

Copy onto colored card stock. Laminate them and use them year after year.

Need a fun review activity for writing linear functions from tables and graphs that gets your students up and moving around the room? These printable Quiz Quiz Trade task cards give students the opportunity to move while quizzing each other on simple tables of values and graphs of linear functions. This 20-minutes activity is perfect for the middle of a block period, a short minimum day class period, or quick review session before an assessment.

This lesson has everything you need to teach a "Thin Slicing" lesson on solving systems of equations algebraically using the substitution method (8.EE.8b). This lesson uses Building Thinking Classrooms strategies for teaching math created by Peter Liljedahl. This lesson will help your students learn how to solve systems of equations using the substitution method, encourages rich math discussion, and introduces various strategies for solving by substitution. This lesson starts with a very low floor to encourage access for all students, and provides a high ceiling with extension questions. Once complete, students can use the provided notes template to record their thinking, as well as a "Check Your Understanding" exit ticket to give you and your students formative assessment feedback on how they are understanding the topic.
