Real-Life Math fun! Exciting Data and Stats Activity - Why so many white cars?
By Daniel
It is always a good strategy to review essential skills with your students.
This DIY hands-on project takes students through the process of collecting, sharing, representing and analyzing qualitative data. Students collect data on the brand, color and type of cars and then present their data in bar and circle graphs.
I have done this project multiple times, have "ironed out any administrative wrinkles" in the practical application of the project and it works every time. Students have a lot fun with the project. They take ownership of the project, since they collect the data themselves.
Qualitative Data, Bar Graphs, Line Graph, Circle Graph, Pie Chart, Statistics, Data, Histogram, Line Graph, Box-and-Whiskers Plot, Stem-and-Leaf Plot.
You might also not want to miss out on these other resources in the Series on Stats and Data!

Page 2: Practice decoding the coordinates for different winter objects on a first-quadrant coordinate plane.
Pages 3 & 4: Practice identifying coordinate pairs on a graph using snowflakes as points. The worksheet will also help your little learners practice visual discrimination skills, visual perception, and scanning.
Page 5: Plot a number of coordinates to find a secret message. This can help motivate your students to try their best to get the message right by plotting the coordinates correctly and accurately.
Page 6: Practice graphing skills by finding the ordered pairs of each winter object located on a "Snow Day" image drawn as a coordinate plane. This is also great to learn some useful winter vocabulary.
This bundle is:
Winter-themed: Students are much more likely to enjoy a math activity if it is either hands-on or visually appealing!
For beginners: since it is only on the first quadrant. All points are represented by whole numbers, there are no fractions or decimals.

Learn and practice solving right triangles with this complete lesson. In this print and go lesson, you can print all 8 pages out and give it out as a packet to start the topic. Have them start off completing the word search with vocabulary associated with solving right triangles. Go through the guided notes with the solving right triangle examples with them (or they can do it alone with the guidance of the notes). Then have them work with a partner to complete the partner problems. After that they will complete the independent practice to see what they understand on their own. You can assign them the HW for the night. The next day they can summarize what they learned, reflect on what was challenging and what was not and then rate themselves on a scale of 1-4 to self assess how well they understood how to solve right triangles
TOPICS:
- Finding missing angles using SOHCAHTOA
- Finding missing sides using SOAHCAHTOA
- Finding missing sides using Pythagorean Theorem
ANSWER KEY INCLUDED.
WHAT YOU GET:
>> DO NOW: Students will complete a short word search to familiarize themselves with the vocabulary associated with solving right triangles. They will fill in a chart reflecting on words they have heard of and have not.
>> GUIDED NOTES: You can go through the vocabulary, guided notes and 3 guided examples with your students.
>>PARTNER PROBLEMS: They will each complete 5 problems each and then check each others problems to reinforce the concepts of how to solve a right triangle.
>>INDEPENDENT PROBLEMS: Students will then work alone to see how well they understand solving right triangles on their own without the help of their partner and complete 10 problems.
>>HW: Students will complete 6 practice problems to practice solving for missing angles and sides of a right triangle.
>>SUMMARIZE, REFLECT, ASSESS: Students will summarize the lesson, reflect on the challenges they had and then self assess from 1-4 to determine how well they understood solving right triangles.
