This is a great way to get your students excited about studying a historical or current figure. Students use research and inference skills to create a resume for a historical or current figure. The example given is Mao Zedong's Resume'. Students will create an objective as to what job the character is applying. The character's education, work experience, etc. will be included. This will enhance the student's comprehension of who the character is and/or was.

This lesson comes complete with a resume layout pdf form for a simple printout as a guide sheet as well as a fillable PDF that can be given to students to fill in at a computer. for easy modifications. a resume' activity sheet, example resume, and grading rubric.

This Four Corners Game is a fun, no-prep activity you can use to review Figurative Language that your students will LOVE! They will love moving around the room as you click through the 40 examples of figurative language, such as hyperbole, metaphor, simile, and personification. I’ve found that although my students can tell me the definition of these terms, simile is the only one they can truly pick out in a text. As a result, their writing is filled with overused similes that need work! This is an activity I use in my classroom every year during our narrative writing unit and I know your students will love it!

STUDENT GUIDELINES FOR USING THIS RESOURCE

After reading each figurative language example on the board, move to the side of the room labeled “Metaphor,” “Simile,” “Hyperbole,” or “Personification.” Be prepared to defend your choices. You may disagree with your classmates’ opinions but do so respectfully. (I typically go over each example with students and discuss the impact of the words or phrases to uncover the deeper meaning. Ask questions such as, "what is being compared?" or "what can the reader visualize?")

*As an optional follow-up activity, use my No-Prep Figurative Language Short Passage Set resource to assess individual understanding, homework, or assessment!

REFLECTION:
The class can review the answers and comments as a whole group when the activity is complete. You’ll be surprised how much better they’ll get at figurative language after being exposed to some high-quality examples!

There is no wonder why escape rooms are so popular; they are highly engaging and encourage people to work together and think creatively in order to solve different puzzles... all while trying to beat the clock! This meticulously-crafted resource features all of the materials you need to conduct a full-length Escape Room for Metamorphosis by Franz Kafka. Planning an escape room may seem like quite the daunting task (and it is!), but this product provides everything from the basics and set-up instructions to signs and answer keys so that yours runs smoothly from start to finish. The activity involves movement, energy, creative thinking and most of all, collaboration. How does it work?

In this escape room, your students have inexplicably transformed into "horrible vermin" and can only turn back into normal teenagers by solving 5 different skills-based puzzles, discovering codes, and finding clues along the way.

• Crossword Puzzle: In the first task, students solve a crossword puzzle with questions about literary elements, quotes, and plot details within Metamorphosis.
• Literary Match Up: In the second task, students draw lines to match passages within the story to the literary element they represent. (Elements included: 3 types of irony, alliteration, onomatopoeia, simile, metaphor, personification)
• Missing Word: In the third task, students fill in the blanks of notable quotes within the story.
• Plot it Out: In the fourth task, students must order the plot events of Metamorphosis on Freytag's Pyramid.
• Jig Saw Quote: In the final task, students must complete a jig saw puzzle (2 separate puzzles included for differentiation) that reveals a quote from Franz Kafka that connects to major themes within Metamorphosis. Once they figure it out and bring it to you, your students transform back into human beings!

Completed with a partner, students will analyze how writers use metaphors in poetry by looking at examples. The PDF provides multiple examples to guide students.
