This is a great way to get your students excited about studying a historical or current figure. Students use research and inference skills to create a resume for a historical or current figure. The example given is Mao Zedong's Resume'. Students will create an objective as to what job the character is applying. The character's education, work experience, etc. will be included. This will enhance the student's comprehension of who the character is and/or was.

DESCRIPTION

▶️ This is an comprehensive Picture Inference Lesson PACKET that includes at least eight activities where students can practice the skill of social inferencing using pictures that are relevant to this day in age. There are a total of 10 pictures that students will use to make inferences. Students have multiple opportunities to observe a social situation and combine picture clues and their background knowledge to figure out what is happening. Students can make inferences about how the people in the pictures are feeling, what they are doing, what they may be thinking, and what situation they may be in.

▶️ This lesson plan will help students learn how to read, interpret, and think about social situations. ALL pictures are age appropriate as you will not hesitate to use any picture during the learning process. After engaging in multiple inferencing activities, students will have the opportunity to reflect on their understanding of the lesson as well as their participation during the learning process. They can use the provided Reflection Sheets of your choice or their choice!

• Topic Sentences / Transitional Sentences (Handout #4): This handout offers advice about how students can use transitional expressions to clarify the logical connections between the claims in each of their topic sentences. It includes a list of different types of transitional expressions along with several examples. (2 pages)

• Precepts for Effective Prose (Handout #5): This handout features about a dozen precepts or "rules of thumb" that students should follow when writing academic papers. The handout contains brief paragraphs on each of the following topics: Avoid plot summary; Always use the present tense; Minimize intensifiers; Alternatives to writing "It says"!! (2 pages)

• Sample Introductory Paragraphs: Look at six introductory paragraphs from articles published by literary scholars in academic journals over the last decade. After reading each figurative language example on the board, move to the side of the room labeled “Metaphor,” “Simile,” “Hyperbole,” or “Personification.” Be prepared to defend your choices. You may disagree with your classmates’ opinions but do so respectfully. (I typically go over each example with students and discuss the impact of the words or phrases to uncover the deeper meaning. Ask questions such as, "what is being compared?" or "what can the reader visualize?")

REFLECTION:

In this escape room, students will try to escape from Gilead into Canada by solving 5 different puzzles, discovering an encrypted message, and finding clues along the way.

• In the first task, students must match characters to quotes they said within the novel. Highlighted boxes in the correct answers will reveal the code.
• In the second task, students must solve a word maze (because "a rat is free to go anywhere, as long as it stays inside the maze") and collect letters along the way that will reveal the code.

Why teach word meaning through nonsense words?

• Students must use critical thinking to solve
• Students must read the whole passage for context clues
• Students must problem solve to find the best word that makes the most sense.
• They can't find the answer except through problem solving.

All of these are things we want every student to do! This is something that is already adapted for high and low learners.

Starting with three nonsense words gets students going so they can work in groups or independently to decode the meaning of 7 REAL words (selected from the SAT vocabulary list).

Completed with a partner, students will analyze how writers use metaphors in poetry by looking at examples. The PDF provides multiple examples to guide students. They will then read and analyze a mentor poem and utilize the same structure to write their poem. They will love creating their poems and watching their ideas come to life! • Match 'Em Up: In the first task, students must match up poetic terms and devices with their definitions. Letters intersected by the lines between the terms and definitions will reveal their first code.
• Figuratively Speaking: In the second task, students must correctly identify the figurative language used in poem excerpts. When matched correctly, shaded boxes reveal their second code.
• Television: In the third task, students must closely read the poem, Television, by Roald Dahl. Then, they must correctly identify poetic terms and devices within the poem. When matched correctly on a chart, the third code is revealed.
• Playground Blues: In the fourth task, students must perform a close reading of Back in the Playground Blues by Adrian Mitchell. Letters of the multiple choice CCSS-aligned question answers following the poem reveal their fourth code.
