I’ve found that although my students can tell me the definition of these terms, simile is the only one they can truly pick out in a text. As a result, their writing is filled with overused similes that need work! This is an activity I use in my classroom every year during our narrative writing unit and I know your students will love it!

STUDENT GUIDELINES FOR USING THIS RESOURCE

After reading each figurative language example on the board, move to the side of the room labeled “Metaphor,” “Simile,” “Hyperbole,” or “Personification.” Be prepared to defend your choices. You may disagree with your classmates’ opinions but do so respectfully. (I typically go over each example with students and discuss the impact of the words or phrases to uncover the deeper meaning. Ask questions such as, "what is being compared?" or "what can the reader visualize?")

*As an optional follow-up activity, use my No-Prep Figurative Language Short Passage Set resource to assess individual understanding, homework, or assessment!

REFLECTION:
The class can review the answers and comments as a whole group when the activity is complete. You’ll be surprised how much better they’ll get at figurative language after being exposed to some high-quality examples!

Completed with a partner, students will analyze how writers use metaphors in poetry by looking at examples. The PDF provides multiple examples to guide students. They will then read and analyze a mentor poem and utilize the same structure to write their poem. They will love creating their poems and watching their ideas come to life! This well-organized activity allows students to effortlessly become poets, while thinking about concise and precise word choice, counting syllables to create rhythm, getting exposure to high-quality examples, and learning something new! ▶️ This is an comprehensive Picture Inference Lesson PACKET that includes at least eight activities where students can practice the skill of social inferencing using pictures that are relevant to this day in age. There are a total of 10 pictures that students will use to make inferences. Students have multiple opportunities to observe a social situation and combine picture clues and their background knowledge to figure out what is happening. Students can make inferences about how the people in the pictures are feeling, what they are doing, what they may be thinking, and what situation they may be in.

▶️ This lesson plan will help students learn how to read, interpret, and think about social situations. ALL pictures are age appropriate as you will not hesitate to use any picture during the learning process. After engaging in multiple inferencing activities, students will have the opportunity to reflect on their understanding of the lesson as well as their participation during the learning process. They can use the provided Reflection Sheets of your choice or their choice!

• Winter Wonders: In the second task, students will read 6 fun facts about winter. They must identify which of 6 comma rules each fact employs. When comma cards are matched correctly with the facts, shaded boxes reveal their second code.
• Figuratively Frozen: In the third task, students identify the figurative language devices used in excerpts from beautiful winter poems (like Winter's Artist by Suzanne Bates). Shaded letters in the correct answers form the third code.
• Frost's Woods: In the fourth task, students must perform a close reading of Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening by Robert Frost, the perfect poem to study on a blustery day. Letters of the multiple choice question answers following the poem reveal their fourth code.
• Encrypted Message: In the final task, students must solve an encrypted message using the codes and clues from the first four tasks. The message is a provocative quote about winter by French philosopher, Albert Camus. Once they bring that to you, they may escape their snowed-in classroom!

Students cannot escape until they complete 5 poetry-based tasks to show these ghosts of poets past that they do in fact know their poetry.

• Match 'Em Up: In the first task, students must match up poetic terms and devices with their definitions. Letters intersected by the lines between the terms and definitions will reveal their first code.
• Figuratively Speaking: In the second task, students must correctly identify the figurative language used in poem excerpts. When matched correctly, shaded boxes reveal their second code.
• Television: In the third task, students must closely read the poem, Television, by Roald Dahl. Then, they must correctly identify poetic terms and devices within the poem. When matched correctly on a chart, the third code is revealed.
• Playground Blues: In the fourth task, students must perform a close reading of Back in the Playground Blues by Adrian Mitchell. Letters of the multiple choice CCSS-aligned question answers following the poem reveal their fourth code.
• Jig Saw Quote: In the final task, students must assemble a jig saw puzzle that forms a quote about poetry. Once the puzzle is assembled and students bring the quote to you, they may escape the room.

The only way to escape is by solving 5 different skills-based puzzles, discovering a hidden message, and finding clues along the way.

• In the first task, students must order the major plot points of Macbeth on Freytag's Pyramid. When ordered correctly, letters in the shaded boxes on the chart form their first code.
• In the second task, students must match each character from Macbeth with their description by drawing a line connecting them. Letters not intersected by these lines will form their second code word.
• In the third task, students must complete fill-in-the-blank sentences using vocabulary words from the play. The vocabulary cards, once assembled correctly, will reveal the third code.
• In the fourth task, students must complete a crossword puzzle about major plot points, characters, setting, and quotes from the play. Circled letters within the crossword, once unscrambled, reveal their fourth code.
