AP Spanish Persuasive Paragraph Assessment with Study Guide and Rubric

AP Spanish® teachers- here is a GREAT way to assess both content knowledge and either writing or speaking skill! This assessment can be digital or printable, formative or summative! It can serve as a good introduction to the argumentative essay or a faster way to assess persuasive writing than having students do a full argumentative AP®-style essay. Included in this resource is a student study guide explaining what their task is and some helpful do's and don'ts to writing persuasively!

Instead of an entire essay, students will write a concise paragraph defending a position related to a topic investigated in class. In order to do well, students must reference the sources they read, listened to, viewed and discussed in class. This task asks a question about climate change, but simply change out the question to make this assessment fit with any unit or context!

The Ku Klux Klan: Comparing the Past To Today

  • The teacher may share all possible discussion questions with students before the seminar or the teacher may share only one question at a time.

Seminar:

  • Students are placed in small groups or virtual break out rooms of 5-6 students.
  • Teacher poses the essential question.
  • Students respond to the question through writing their own questions using Costas.
  • Teacher chooses a Socratic Seminar leader for each group.
  • The leader facilitates the seminar discussion by guiding group members to a deeper and clarified consideration of the ideas, a respect for varying points of view, and adherence to and respect for the seminar process.
  • Students may pose new questions when the discussion is exhausted. New questions posed must relate to students’ ideas and contributions in response to the initial essential question.
  • Students write a list of classroom norms with their group.

The Debate on Affirmative Action

Affirmative Action had been a contentious issue in the United States since the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960's. The Supreme Court’s 2023 decision to reject race-conscious admissions at colleges and universities around the nation upended decades of law and the higher education landscape. This lesson will invite students to draw connections between the past and today, as they take a focused look at affirmative action as it applies to admission programs at universities. Students will be provided with an introductory framework from which to understand the historical roots of affirmative action and its' controversial application today through the analysis of primary sources, research, and student-led discussion forum activity.

Time Frame: 2-3 class periods (Based on 60 min class period)

Have you head the Notes in Spanish podcasts? Do you use Edpuzzle? For AP Spanish® Unit 6, I made an MP4 recording of the audio for the podcast about Climate Change, and uploaded it to Edpuzzle! I inserted multiple choice, auto-graded questions into the recording to help students to find the right spot in the podcast to find the answer.
