The Scarlet Letter Pre-Reading Activities | Puritan Era & Colonial New England
By TaughtOught Homeschooling
These three pre-reading activities are the perfect introduction to the literature unit for The Scarlet Letter by Nathanial Hawthorne. The activities are anticipatory and get students in the mindset of Puritan and Colonial New England life, put in the shoes of the community members of those times, learn some initial vocabulary, and have the opportunity to tie this all together by writing what they think the novel is about based on these pre-reading activities.
What does this product include?
How should I use these activities in the classroom?
You will ultimately determine how these three activities can be used, and they truly can be used in whichever order you see fit. And if you have a class full of students who are completely unfamiliar with the plot of The Scarlet Letter, I suggest completing the slideshow first, the Secret Sinner game second, and the worksheet third (or send it home as homework).
Grab the annotation-supported digital and print copy of the novel here.

✧ Geography Bell Ringers Bundle
✧ Geography Bell Ringers Individually
Every minute counts! As teachers, we are strapped for time. There simply doesn't seem to be enough time to teach all the necessary concepts or find time to prepare adequately for state testing! While you take roll, take up homework, and answer questions regarding late work, etc., have a quick bell warm-up activity for students to complete that will reinforce map, chart, and graph reading along with other higher-level thinking-skill questions. This will prepare your students for state testing! (Questions not included with this template, but can be found in our store).
Not only are these geography warm-up activity bell ringers for the beginning of class great transitions to start class and get students mentally ready for class, but it's also a great way to work in time for state test prep activities without all the extra work**.** Many of the social studies test questions require students to read, examine, and analyze maps, charts, graphs, etc. I have used bell ringers for years and I have seen an increase in students' abilities to read maps, graphs, and charts. It's worth your time and theirs!
This second set of bell ringers ask students to use their class atlases to read maps, graphs, and charts such as map projections, climate maps, time zone maps, population pyramids, and more. Although they are specified for the first six weeks, they can be used at any time throughout the year. The atlas used for reference is the Rand McNally 6th Edition found on Amazon for $15 found here. But many atlases can be used and are more affordable here. If you use another atlas, simply modify each slide to reference the map or page in the atlas you are using. The questions can remain the same.
Many educators struggle with the task of figuring out how to start class each day or how to transition from concept to concept. Due to the nature of switching class to class, students often struggle to mentally prepare to transition to a different subject. A popular solution to these problems is the idea of the beginning of the class warm-up bellringers. These start-of-class activities benefit both students and teachers.
A bell ringer, often referred to as a warm-up activity or a do-now, is a short exercise or prompt given to students at the beginning of class. These activities are designed to capture students' attention, activate prior knowledge, and set the tone for the rest of the lesson.
Note: Answers are in the presentation notes section within each slide.

ALTERNATIVE USE FOR TEMPLATE
I use questions from a book on everything from map reading from climate to culture to government. It is a great way to give them this practice. I suggest rather than coming up with your questions, get a book with practice questions. I display the question before class begins, and students know what to do as soon as they enter the door. They grab their Geojournal, sit down and complete the 2-3 question warm-up.
I can find questions relevant to what they were studying that week. When creating my lesson plans, it takes 10 minutes to choose the practice questions for the week. Here is the series of geography books that I used: (copy and paste if the link down does not work)
Where to find Daily Geography Practice Books:
✧Evan-Moore Site: https://www.evan-moor.com/social-studies-daily-practice
✧Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/Daily-Geography-Practice-Grade-6/dp/1557999759
This book is called Daily Geography Practice. It is the best purchase I made for my geography classroom. Evan-Moore has grades 1-6. Even if you teach a higher grade level, these books are useful across grade levels. I purchased the 5th and 7th-grade versions and used them in my 7th-grade geography classroom.
Most classrooms now have projectors or smart boards and these can be used with either. I hope this helps and makes it easier to create bell work! This is the easiest thing I do or plan in the classroom with a great outcome.
Work smarter, not harder!

Women in Colonial America: DBQs and Primary Sources *APUSH*
By Christa Nonnemaker
This 22 page Primary Source Analysis and DBQ activity gives students a chance to delve deeper into life of colonial women from 1607 to 1763. They will be able to determine what issues were important to women and how they contributed to society.
The first three pages provide background on the Colonial Era, notes on primary sources and Teacher Notes.
Included is a one-page sheet that explains what primary sources are and how to analyze them using specific questions through a process called HAPPY (Historical Context, Audience, Purpose, Point of View and Why Significant).
Primary sources include pamphlet excerpts, photographs and posters. Each page of primary sources includes questions.
There are also two DBQ prompts. DBQ questions are an excellent way for students to identify point of view, consider intended audience and context. DBQ practice helps students prepare for AP and IB exams.
There is also a page at the end for students to apply the HAPPY process to one source. An Answer Key to all the questions and the HAPPY process is available at the end of the packet. This is excellent practice for all high school students, particularly Honors and AP students, but all students will find these resources engaging.
Students can read this on their own as a homework assignment or it can be a group activity in a classroom. It is also ideally suited for home-schoolers or independent learners who want to learn more. Teachers can assign just a few sources to analyze or the entire packet. Student time will vary. A Worksheet with questions based on the reading is included, along with an Answer Key.
There is also an Easel Activity which allows students to answer the questions at the end of each primary source online. For homework purposes, Home Schoolers or for asynchronous learning, this is an especially valuable digital option .
This is part of the Women in American History Series which includes PowerPoint lessons as well as Reading Assignments and Worksheets, Analyzing Primary Sources and Activities for other eras.

The Japanese-Americans During WWII: DBQs and Primary Sources *APUSH*
By Christa Nonnemaker
This 25-page resource with 15 primary sources plus a DBQ question gives students a chance to delve deeper into the experiences of Japanese-Americans during World War II, both in internment camps and outside of internment camps. Many students know that Japanese-Americans from the West Coast were interned. Here’s a chance to read documents that shed light on how the decision was made, whether the racial prejudices were shared among all Americans, how Japanese-Americans contributed outside the camps, and how re-integration was perceived. The Japanese-American experience went far beyond their internment in the camps.
Assign just one, a few or all of the sources depending on time constraints and student interest.
Primary Sources include:
*Customer Complaint and Restaurant Owner’s Response
*Transcript from a Meeting in General DeWitt’s Office, January 1942
* Excerpt from Executive Order 9066, February 1942
*Evacuation Notice Number 9, April 1942
*Images from Evacuation and Assembly Center
*Letter from Internee to Former Middle School Teacher, September 1942
*Excerpt of Congressional Report of Dies Committee, August 1943
*Photographs of Life inside the Internment Camp
*Resolution by the Native Sons of the Golden West, Santa Cruz Parlor, April 1944
*Photographs of Contributions by Japanese-Americans
*Letter Insert by Assistant Director of War Relocation Authority, January 1946
Included is a one-page sheet that explains what primary sources are and how to analyze them using specific questions through a process called HAPPY. Primary sources include letters, photos, reports and other documents. Each page of primary sources includes questions. There is also a page at the end for students to apply the HAPPY process to one source. Two DBQ prompts are included at the end. An Answer Key to all the questions and the DBQ prompts are available at the end of the packet.
This is excellent practice for all high school students, particularly Honors and AP students, but all students will find these resources engaging.
This is also available as a digital resource through Easel so students may complete it online.
