The Scarlet Letter Pre-Reading Activities | Puritan Era & Colonial New England

By TaughtOught Homeschooling

These three pre-reading activities are the perfect introduction to the literature unit for The Scarlet Letter by Nathanial Hawthorne. The activities are anticipatory and get students in the mindset of Puritan and Colonial New England life, put in the shoes of the community members of those times, learn some initial vocabulary, and have the opportunity to tie this all together by writing what they think the novel is about based on these pre-reading activities.

What does this product include?

  • One debate/discussion slideshow with 15 statements such as, "People should always be forgiven for their mistakes, no matter how serious the mistake."
  • One group/class game "Secret Sinner"
  • One printable worksheet with 8 vocabulary words such as "redemption" and "ostracism" for students to match with the definition. This worksheet has an added game in which when all the vocab words have been matched with their definition, students will unscramble the secret word (which is another vocab word), and they have space to write what they think the novel, The Scarlet Letter, is about based on the vocabulary words

How should I use these activities in the classroom?

You will ultimately determine how these three activities can be used, and they truly can be used in whichever order you see fit. And if you have a class full of students who are completely unfamiliar with the plot of The Scarlet Letter, I suggest completing the slideshow first, the Secret Sinner game second, and the worksheet third (or send it home as homework).

Grab the annotation-supported digital and print copy of the novel here.

Not only are these geography warm-up activity bell ringers for the beginning of class great transitions to start class and get students mentally ready for class, but it's also a great way to work in time for state test prep activities without all the extra work**.** Many of the social studies test questions require students to read, examine, and analyze maps, charts, graphs, etc. I have used bell ringers for years and I have seen an increase in students' abilities to read maps, graphs, and charts. It's worth your time and theirs!

This second set of bell ringers ask students to use their class atlases to read maps, graphs, and charts such as map projections, climate maps, time zone maps, population pyramids, and more. Although they are specified for the first six weeks, they can be used at any time throughout the year. The atlas used for reference is the Rand McNally 6th Edition found on Amazon for $15 found here. But many atlases can be used and are more affordable here. If you use another atlas, simply modify each slide to reference the map or page in the atlas you are using. The questions can remain the same.

THESE CAN BE USED WITH THE GEOJOURNAL TEMPLATE FOUND HERE.

Many educators struggle with the task of figuring out how to start class each day or how to transition from concept to concept. Due to nature of switching class to class, students often struggle to mentally prepare to transition to a different subject. A popular solution to these problems is the idea of the beginning of the class warm-up bellringers. These start-of-class activities benefit both students and teachers.

A bell ringer, often referred to as a warm-up activity or a do-now, is a short exercise or prompt given to students at the beginning of class. These activities are designed to capture students' attention, activate prior knowledge, and set the tone for the rest of the lesson.

Note: Answers are in the presentation notes section within each slide.

☑ For secondary, middle school and high school students☑Check out the preview to see what is included.

NAFTA & The U.S./Mexico Border

By Sarah Austin

This lesson is based on my own personal experience as a participant on a USA-Mexico border tour project organized by Rethinking Schools & Global Exchange that provided first-hand experience and knowledge concerning the effects of U.S. foreign policy, such as NAFTA, on the lives of ordinary people who reside in the Tijuana area. Students will be prompted to delve far beyond the mainstream explanation that answers the critical question as to why people cross the U.S.-Mexico border. This lesson will have students examine the broader context, and underlying factors to this question, which intimately tie itself to Mexico's agricultural economy. Students will identify the causal puzzle pieces, and then create a ‘LOOP’ (web) diagram that will serve to demonstrate their understandings of how these underlying causes interconnect with one another. Materials: • One 50 Slide PowerPoint • Grading Rubrics • Student Loop Diagram Examples • Printable Handouts: 1) Handout #1- Power-Point Guided Notes 2) Handout #2- The U.S.-Mexico Border Puzzle Pieces If you liked this lesson see the 'BUNDLE unit lesson' here: NAFTA & the U.S. Mexico Border Bundle I OFTEN PROVIDE FREEBIES TO MY FOLLOWERS AND ALL NEW PRODUCTS DEBUT AT 20% OFF: • Look for the green star next to my store logo at the top right corner of this page and click it to become a follower. Every minute counts! As teachers, we are strapped for time. There simply doesn't seem to be enough time to teach all the necessary concepts or find time to prepare adequately for state testing! While you take roll, take up homework, and answer questions regarding late work, etc., have a quick bell warm-up activity for students to complete that will reinforce map, chart, and graph reading along with other higher-level thinking-skill questions. This will prepare your students for state testing! (Questions not included with this template, but can be found in our store).

But many atlases can be used and are more affordable here. If you use another atlas, simply modify each slide to reference the map or page in the atlas you are using. ALTERNATIVE USE FOR TEMPLATE

I use questions from a book on everything from map reading from climate to culture to government. It is a great way to give them this practice. I suggest rather than coming up with your questions, get a book with practice questions. I display the question before class begins, and students know what to do as soon as they enter the door. They grab their Geojournal, sit down and complete the 2-3 question warm-up.

I can find questions relevant to what they were studying that week. When creating my lesson plans, it takes 10 minutes to choose the practice questions for the week. Here is the series of geography books that I used: (copy and paste if the link down does not work)

Where to find Daily Geography Practice Books:

✧Evan-Moore Site: https://www.evan-moor.com/social-studies-daily-practice

✧Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/Daily-Geography-Practice-Grade-6/dp/1557999759

This book is called Daily Geography Practice. It is the best purchase I made for my geography classroom. Evan-Moore has grades 1-6. Even if you teach a higher grade level, these books are useful across grade levels. I purchased the 5th and 7th-grade versions and used them in my 7th-grade geography classroom.

Most classrooms now have projectors or smart boards and these can be used with either. I hope this helps and makes it easier to create bell work! This is the easiest thing I do or plan in the classroom with a great outcome.

Work smarter, not harder!

NEW! Geography, History, 9-11 We Remember, World Trade Center, Patriot Day

By Geography & Math Made Easy

IMPORTANT: Give students the option to choose not to participate in this lesson if they are anyway connected to the event. Let them know in advance earlier in the week prior to the day of the lesson and allow them to come to you in confidentiality if they wish not to participate. Make another arrangement for that student for the one class period.

This is a factual lesson and does not ask students to imagine or place themselves in others' shoes, yet if a child had a family member or experienced the event his/herself, you may not want to subject them to ANY lesson on this topic. This lesson gives a timeline of events and facts about the event.

ALSO NOTE: The closing activity incorporates a song by the Beastie Boys: "Listen, All You New Yorkers" which was written after 9/11 as a Love Letter to New York. (Look it up on Youtube) Depending on your classroom/school culture, you may or may not choose to use this. This is not mandatory for the lesson, but song and music is a good way to engage students. In saying this, the lyrics included in the lesson have been rewritten to take out questionable wording/content. i.e. LSD, Porno, Hell. These words have been replaced with other words. However, the words cannot be taken out of the Youtube video or song. The lyrics can be used without the video or song, but will not be as effective. IMPORTANT: YOU WILL WANT TO LISTEN TO THE SONG PRIOR TO PURCHASE as this song may not be appropriate for all students/classes/schools. You as the educator are responsible for gaging what is appropriate for your students and are responsible for what is presented to them.

Women of the American Revolution Reading Assignment and Worksheet

This quick four-page Reading Assignment and Worksheet provides an overview of the various activities, attributes and activities of women during the Revolutionary Era. It works well as a Guided Reading activity or as an exercise for Reading Comprehension.

It covers the time period 1763, the end of the French and Indian War and through the American Revolution to 1783. Due to increasing pressures from Great Britain, colonists began to resist and women, for the first time, became involved on a political level as activists. Women's contributions will be highlighted during the Pre-Revolutionary Era (1763-776) and the Revolutionary War (1776-1783).

Students can read this on their own as a homework assignment or it can be a group activity in a classroom. It is also ideally suited for home-schoolers or independent learners who want to learn more about women's contributions. A Worksheet with questions based on the reading is included, along with an Answer Key.

If you like World War II historical fiction, I have written a book called Hearts of War about a Nisei soldier who served in the Military Intelligence Service and a woman who served in the Women Army Corps. In writing this book, I wanted to bring an unknown aspect of history to light. Available on Amazon or Kindle and I appreciate any reviews!
