Less than $5 Homeschool Social Studies & History Google Apps (by price, high to low)

This lesson will have students critically explore what has been described as “one of the worst human rights crisis in the world”— referring to the camps located in the northwestern province of China, which are currently holding a million or more Uighur Muslims. The Chinese government disagrees with this portrayal, and has claimed that the camps are merely “re-education centers.” This lesson will have students analyze the validity of the two portrayals through the study of multiple sources.

The central investigative question is:

Are the camps in China “re-education centers” or are they “concentration camps”?

Time Frame: 2-3 class periods (60 min)

This lesson will have students explore & debate the five major compromises that were made at the Constitutional Convention in Philadelphia in 1787. The delegates were charged with the task of amending the Articles of Confederation. However, they quickly decided to replace the Articles and write a new constitution. Because the delegates came from all parts of the country, they differed on a number of key issues. In order to keep the convention going and ensure ratification of the Constitution, the delegates had to compromise a number of times. As a result, the final document is sometimes described as a "bundle" of compromises.

This bundle has two online activities about the life and career of the National Youth Poet Laureate and reader of 'The Hill We Climb' during the 2021 Inauguration of Joe Biden, Amanda Gorman. The resources are perfect for Distance Learning in third grade or fourth grade, and are ideal for students learning about the U.S. History or for Women's History Month.

Firstly, there is a close reading activity, or informational text, with comprehension and grammar questions followed by an extension task. The resource comes in two formats: a Google Forms document and a printable PDF.

Secondly, there is a biography writing unit. The unit has been split into four separate lessons which will take students approximately 40-50 minutes each. The Google Slides activity is ideal for distance learning. The first lesson is interactive and involves students reading facts, and then sorting and ordering these facts into paragraphs. In the second lesson the children need to use these facts to type four paragraphs. Then, in the third lesson they need to choose the most important facts and include these in an introduction; after this they need to answer several questions before typing up their conclusion. In the final lesson your class will need to check their draft paragraphs before typing up their work on to the template provided. The resource again comes in two formats: a Google Slides document and a printable PDF.

These activities are both online resources that use Google Forms and Google Slides, they are linked to your Google Drive. They can be completed by students online using tablets, phones or computers. The resources also come in a PDF format, which can be printed.

Time allowance to complete each activity:

5-10 minutes - read through the text individually.

40-50 minutes - answer questions using the text as guidance (including extension activity)

Time allowance to assess:

A class set of activities might take around 15-20 minutes to mark; the teacher can then send the students their marks automatically, which allows them to read back through their work. Nearly all answers are not automatically generated, but only require a small amount of work to assign points. This is because the aim is to get students writing answers and not to just have multiple choice options.

A great digital research and sorting activity that is perfect for introducing students to some of the key events of Ancient Rome. Great for class work, distance learning or home schooling. There are 30 posters or task cards that include many of the key events and periods from the founding of the city of Rome to the end of the Byzantine Empire in the east.

The research and sorting activity is differentiated into two levels: with dates and without dates. Lower level students can sort the events using the dates, whilst higher level students can research the dates online before sorting the timeline.

You may hear about natural disasters often, but some of the deadliest disasters in world history have been environmental disasters caused by human activity.
